Title: Novembers BOM - Final Assembly and Big Reveal
Post by: Iminei on November 01, 2020, 11:30:08 AM
And its the final countdown ....

Hopefully you have your chosen Blocks layered and quilted and ready to go ...  unlike me!

Im going to direct you to the far end of THIS TUTORIAL (https://photos.app.goo.gl/EC7CE1Uir5r2vGR2A)  if your fairly confident and raring to go.

If I can advise TWO things....

Before starting to attach your rows/columns together ....

CLEAN under the needle plate of your machine and CHANGE the needle ...
If your machine is going to start skipping stitches this,
with all the multiple layers of fabric and wadding, will be the time it does it!

When joining your LONG columns of blocks together .....

Try and match the horizontal joining strips as well as you can
You can do this by pinning and then stitching, with a fairly long Stitch length,
over just the intersections that need to match.

If they match well, Great!!!
Carry on stitching along the length of the columns,
Remembering to change your stitch length to a smaller piecing length.

If they're too off for your liking you can unpick and try again.

* * *

I will by the end of this week (8th November) have the final tut for you,
please bear with me, last month was a bit of a washout.

I will be watching, but I am, unfortunately waaaaaaay behind. the last few months have been murderous, and it looks as if things can only get worse. I would like to think I will be able to finish my quilt, but I doubt very much it will be this year. :(
Thanks to COVID, and despite fighting desperately, and working our butts off, it looks as if we will lose our business. Five years on and it will all be lost. Sad and bitter. Oh well, I will try to finish BOM but can't promise.

Here are my joined-up BOMs. I haven't done all this since the tutorial was posted, btw, I had an early start and some one-to-one tuition  :ninja:

@Iminei Thank you. The quilt has been given to a friend who loves anything I make, bless her.  <3
I didn't know there was a choice of badges, so either would be lovely, thank you.
Although we live in the same place, our town hall has changed the postal address slightly. Don't ask, this is Spain!
I'll message you with the updated address.

Thank you @Lilian . QAYG more often than not produces the thin sashing and mine was extra thin because I had to trim some of my blocks down to the correct size and to avoid losing all the pointy bits I took a deep breath and made the joining strips a little narrower. It was a bit tight in places!
Follow Iminei's instructions when you get to them and you'll be fine.

Post by: Kenora on November 06, 2020, 21:35:00 PM
Lovely quilt @supergran - it looks really effective. <3

I spent all afternoon putting the first border on mine, only to discover that I'd accidentally moved the border out of line with the main quilt at the beginning of the seam - only by 1/4" but I still had to unpick it. :S Better luck tomorrow I hope. :)
Title: Re: Novembers BOM
Post by: supergran on November 06, 2020, 22:11:43 PM
Thank you @Kenora .

I hate it when that happens. I found myself unpicking more of this quilt then I ever have before. It seemed that if I could do something wrong, then I did! It nearly drove me mad at times and it was a relief when it was finished. Still, it worked out in the end. Yours is going to be gorgeous.

Post by: Iminei on November 08, 2020, 11:03:08 AM
Another tip, as it doesnt look like a BOM is in the offing today.

AFTER you've sewn your blocks/strips together with your horizontal/vertical joining strips ...

Pull them apart slightly as you press the strips open...

This will ensure all the strips are pressed open to their the maximum width and that the wadding underneath lies nice and flat within them.
Title: Re: Novembers BOM
Post by: Sandra on November 08, 2020, 11:31:42 AM
Mine's joined together. It has a 2 inch border added and I've just got it spread out on the living room floor thinking about what colour to use for a flanged binding. Never done one before. Think it'll look nice on this.

I've narrowed it down to four from seven colours but two of these aren't really working for me.  I think I know which colour I'll use but I'm awaiting input from Gertie...when she comes downstairs. (And if she's in the mood to offer her opinion.)

Title: Re: Novembers BOM
Post by: Iminei on November 12, 2020, 08:59:03 AM
Dont be @Acorn  ... Its really easy!

It may get a lil cumbersome at the end of a BIG quilt, but with a maximum of 16 blocks you'll be wondering what all the fuss was about!

If you need anymore reassurance ask @Flobear  a first time quilter!

Gertie spoke and without hesitation, she said, 'WHITE!' for the flange, so white it is. Finished it off yesterday evening.

Oh,  @Sandra that is just stunning and white is definitely a good call.
I like your hanging method.  I never keep that type of hangar but I will see them with different eyes now.
I must say @Iminei that's a really good collection of blocks for a sampler quilt, none of them stands out as not fitting with the others as is often the case with samplers.  I'm looking forward to seeing the rest of the quilts.

Agree that's a good use of those hangers. My other quilt top is fixed to a metre ruler with those little plastic clips that are supposed to be instead of pins. I have picture rails in this house and they're ideal for a job like that. I will miss them when I move!

Gorgeous @Sandra  0_0

I'm halfway through the joining @Iminei - I used the end of your cot quilt tut and found a Youtube video that showed me what I couldn't quite figure out - so I don't need a dedicated tut.
Title: Re: Novembers BOM
Post by: Iminei on November 17, 2020, 10:52:24 AM
I may do one anyhow ...

The tuts came about as a resource for me, so I could remember how to make certain blocks etc so it might be handy ...

and Yes actually I DO want to finish this years BOM properly.

Ive just got to finish handsewing (Sigh!) the horizontal joiing strips down before I can carry on with the tut.

Thanks everyone.
Ah! Yes.   :| The ninth one.  0_0
Was it called Celtic Twist or some such?  Anyway, I did it just because I liked it, I had some spare time on my hands, and was curious about how it went together, but liked it enough for it to be included in the final quilt.  :)

The chequerboard and bargello ones looked awful in my mad colour scheme, so I left those out.
I'd have preferred to have a bit more breathing space between the blocks rather than the half inch. Again, it's my bold colours. They're a bit in yer face and might have been less so if there was an inch and half between them.

It's funny isn't it? I thought I'd properly considered what goes where before joining it all together and I've since thought I should have put several in different positions. I'm looking at the lower bottom corner and thinking it should have been turned with the orange side at the outer corner of the quilt and not having the orange so close the the block next to it.

I'm chuffed to have finally learned how to quilt as you go.  :) Thanks again for your lovely comments. I'm looking forward to seeing everyone else's now.

Sandra.

The Tut is coming!

I realise there are first timers out there that need it ... We've seen beautiful quilts from peeps with great experience ... but the tut is coming.

I've joined Four of the columns together and only have the centre join left to do ... Please be patient ... I am very sorry abut the delay and I hope, considering the October I had, you can forgive me.

Beautiful quilts people. I’ve been pinning today- decided to try the dining table instead of the floor. Here it is so far- I’ve still got all the quilting to do as I’m just doing a conventional quilt rather than QAYG.. Think I’ll straight line quilt around each block, then do each one differently.

I have one vertical left to hand stitch, but I am going to add a border, which may mean handstitching all the way around... although I might be able to do that by machine.  I'm going to poke the quilt police in the eyes and combine the border and binding.
Title: Re: Novembers BOM
Post by: Bjay on November 20, 2020, 10:20:57 AM
My fingers aren't mobile enough to hand sew a border so machining  it is. A useful set of posts about binding here https://thesewingplace.org.uk/index.php/topic,11316.0.html

Not that I can do anything - machine was supposed to be collected between 8.30 and 9 - still waiting and it's now 10.20.
Result is a n irate Bjay and  dog that has not had  a walk

Somewhere in the BOM  is something about sashing strips. If I can find it I will cut out the strips ready and spend rest of day dong boring stuff like huse work!!

After I got Cherry Red from Doughty's and it was too orange, I went back to look and most of the reds were gone although Christmas Red had appeared. When I sent my sample off to Midsomer, she sent me back a sample of the best match she had but I didn't know which one it was until it arrived today.

The one that purports to be Cherry Red is too orangey - it certainly didn't look like that on my screen when I ordered it but I realise that screens all differ even if I do have a Mac with a Retina screen (whatever that is!)

Anyway, I now have an orangey-red blender in my stash  ;)

Is it bound already?

I bound mine before I added the label ...
All I had to do was unpick a stretch of stitching, insert the label and resew ... simples!

There are two types of label available  (https://photos.app.goo.gl/NHGCcy95nkJRDxZR7)... Levis label which is inserted into the binding and has words on both sides or an applique label which is flat that you applique onto the back ... your choice.

I decided to pinch the hanger idea and hang up my BOM quilt while it's waiting to be bound.

And I took a pic. of the two reds. The one on the right is supposedly Cherry Red and on the left is Christmas Red. Don't know how well they'll show up on other screens but you may be able to see that Cherry is definitely more orangey.

I didn't think it was the same as your Cherry Red @Iminei , I would have noticed if yours was that orangey because it wouldn't have matched the red in my BOMs.

Anyway, now sorted, as you said. Can't do anything until Friday now because I have more clearing up and stuff to do before surveyor comes tomorrow and we have agreed to be out, with the dogs, when he comes.

Interesting @Pearl . It looks as if one person's cherry is another person's vermilion - or something!

Anyway, I have a newbie question for experienced binders. I have read right through the tut about binding but it's not mentioned - maybe it's so obvious that only a stupid person would ask it  :|

My assembled quilt measures 51" each side. I have cut the lengths for the binding and will assemble them on Friday. Before I pin it on, should I measure the binding in 51" chunks - apart from the first bit which starts in the middle - so I can make sure I don't accidentally stretch or squidge any of the sides and end up with not-a-perfect square when it's done?

I think whomever picked the fabric for Flo's order picked the wrong thing ...
My cherry red was deep with hints of black too.
Never mind a stash is essential and Orange can add a zing to most other colours!

My Christmas red isn't as dark as that but it works OK.

I seem to be collecting yellows and oranges by accident, they've never been colours I've warmed to!

@Flobear  ... No! join the binding in one continuous length and if you get a join at the mitre  you have a join at the mitre but its never happened to me ... or if it has its not been a problem.

51" sides x 4 =204 / 42 = 4.857 = 5 x (Binding measurement usually 2 1/2" ) wof strips joined on the 45 degree angle and you'll be fine.

@Flobear When I do binding I make one long binding to go all the way round with a bit extra to account for corners and finishing overlap.
Title: Re: Novembers BOM
Post by: Ploshkin on November 25, 2020, 17:15:25 PM
Ha ha @Iminei  I think I've ended up with my binding join on a mitred corner at least twice and I haven't made many quilts.  It just makes the corner a bit thicker but in the greater scheme of things it doesn't notice - it's still annoying though.
@Flobear I don't think you could stretch or squidge a quilt side sufficiently for it to end up out of shape.
Title: Re: Novembers BOM
Post by: Lowena on November 25, 2020, 17:34:48 PM
Yup, one continuous strip for me too
Title: Re: Novembers BOM
Post by: Flobear on November 25, 2020, 17:59:19 PM
Thank you for the responses, ladies

I intended to make one long strip and have planned it so the joins don't end up in the same place or on corners. Do I take it by 'continuous' that I need to join it in a complete circle before starting to attach it?
Title: Re: Novembers BOM
Post by: fajita on November 25, 2020, 18:21:21 PM
I have mine in a single file strip, and only join the two ends as the last task, once the majority of it is attached.

I believe some people construct it completely before attaching, but for me I prefer the freedom to err.

Am I the only person who cuts a strip for each side and then mitres (usually, sometimes not) them at the corners?   :scream:
Title: Re: Novembers BOM
Post by: Lowena on November 25, 2020, 18:36:13 PM
Looks like it @Acorn  :D although I have done so on occasion.
I never join it into a loop @Flobear I'd never be able to manipulate it  :| One long strip...
Title: Re: Novembers BOM
Post by: Ploshkin on November 25, 2020, 19:04:40 PM
Leave plenty of end when you start and then finish stitching a good 8" or more  from where you started ( I wish I listened to myself, I always seem to end up fiddling in a small gap).   You need space to open the 2 ends out flat to get the overlap right. I always find the joining bit tricky and frequently get my diagonal the wrong way.
I expect that's as clear as mud.
Title: Re: Novembers BOM
Post by: Lowena on November 25, 2020, 19:13:05 PM
sometimes get in a muddle too @Ploshkin  and end up with a straight join rather than diagonal. I haven't found that it matters
Title: Re: Novembers BOM
Post by: Deafoldbat on November 25, 2020, 19:17:28 PM
If you approach the corner and are going to have a join land just where the corner is, just stop sewing, and move the join.

If you really want the quilt to be nice and square, you measure across the centre (NOT along the edge) horizontally and vertically subtracting ½ inch to get finished size. Then you cut strips, joining if needed, a little longer (at least as long each end as the width of the strip) than these measurements. Mark the centre of each strip, then measure from that point to the ends (finished size) and mark again ie if your strip has to be 60 ins long, measure 30 ins each side of the centre line. Pin the strip to the quilt, making sure the centre is properly aligned and the end markers are ¼ inch from the raw edges. Stitch the binding between the finished size marks. Repeat with the other sides. Then you can either butt the ends or mitre them, and fold over to the back to hand stitch.

If you use the continuous strip remember to cut enough extra to allow for adjustments as above, and to have enough tail at each end to make the last join easy. The weight of the quilt will drag against you and short tails will be very awkward. I have found it worth making that last join very slightly tight. When you sew the last bit down there often seems to be a tiny pucker that forms when you reach your starting point...
Title: Re: Novembers BOM
Post by: Flobear on November 25, 2020, 19:33:16 PM
I've bound quite a number of small pieces and, apart from the first one,  have always done as @Ploshkin described. Being small items, it has been a bit fiddly to manage the final join but I've always succeeded in the end. Making it slightly tight, as @Deafoldbat said, became obvious after my first couple of bindings.
The first one I did, before I knew about the mitr(e)ing trick, was the method I think @Acorn is using.

Well I've finally taken photos but they're not particularly good (taken on my phone - hope they're small enough - can't get them any smaller!).

Finished quilt laid out on the bed (strange angle because my arms aren't long enough - tried standing on a chair but that looked worse).
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
I used a lovely plaid fabric for the back (which I think I bought from @Efemera ) but didn't have enough to match the stripes. Hey ho. I also put two extra BOM's on the back which didn't seem to belong on the front.
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
The label shows the name of the charity forum I belong to, although the quilt will go to Project Linus.
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
And finally, a close-up of the quilting which I did mostly on my embroidery machine. This is the first time I've done that so I'm still learning. It's not exactly as I would want it but hopefully next time will be better. The corner blocks I did freehand after tracing the centre of the embroidery design.

I've enjoyed making this quilt, so thanks to @Iminei for all your hard work during the year. <3

212" of binding machined on. Had to have 3 goes at the final join  :S  Need decent light to sort out the twiddly bits, may get time to turn it tomorrow. Hoping the mitres will be neat without any further attention.

Yes @Flobear  that final join when you have a flanged binding can be a pig.

In the end I put a stitch in by hand just where the flange joined, loosely machine stitched the rest of the seam, checked it all lined up and then stitched it properly ... It took me 3 goes too but Im pleased with it !!!

To be very specific, it's a dark purpley-brown and feels batik-y. As soon as I saw it in the shop I knew it was just the thing. Black would have been too intense.

@Iminei I now have 3 columns constructed but no sewing machine to finish them. I know what I am doing now  :S

My problem was I had the 16 blocks, then when i laid them out that courtroom steps just didn't look right. The chequerboard did but it was a smidgeon too small as I discovered when I sewed it together, So unpicking (i'm an expert )
I then sewed a narrow border around the block and it is now sewn in.  (scse the washing!)

Title: Re: Novembers BOM
Post by: WendyW on December 31, 2020, 08:37:32 AM
I'm done! It's currently 2:00AM on the 31st, so I'm just barely squeaking by. I haven't kept up with photographing the process, and the whole thing got put on hold when other projects took priorty, but I have dedicated all my sewing time since Christmas to finish it off.  I'm not thrilled with the result, but I like it a lot better now than I did 3 days ago. My primary fabric selection was made by my then-3yo grandaughter, and of course was predominately pink. That purchase consisted of 1 set each of matching fat quarter bundle, jelly roll, and layer cake. I supplemented with the ONLY matching solids Walmart had available, hence the burgundy and lime green. Had other options existed, I would not have chosen those.

This whole thing was very unplanned in advance. So many decisions along the way were made just to solve a problem, not for an aesthetic choice. All the squares got borders after one came out too small, so the borders disguise that problem. I ran out of my solids, so some got scrappy backs. The arrangment was the only thing I could come up with that was reasonably balanced front and back. The sashings were left over jelly roll strips, and I had to dig through my scrap bucket to find enough pieces to make my border from. All I have left of fabric is a couple strips and a small pile of scraps that are under 3". It's a good thing I consider problem solving to be a fun puzzle!

I'm not a fan of QAYG overall, but decided that I could use the opportunity to play with my quilting rulers that I have had for 2 years and barely touched. I did have fun with them, but after putting so much effort into getting my piecing precise, I feel like I ruined my pretty piecing with ameteurish quilting. I definitely need more practice with that! Especially the planning of the quilting route. I think I did pretty well at making the quilting designs work with the block patterns, though.

Everyone else's quilts look lovely! I especially like the colors in @Sandra 's quilt.

Thank you @WendyW That's very kind of you to say that.  :) In spite of your reservations, I think your colours work extremely well together.

Since seeing everyone else's colours, I've felt mine were a bit amateurish. I seem to head straight for BRIGHT !! when a bit of subtlety would be much better and more grown up.
I have a lot to learn.

No you dont @Sandra, Ive seen your work up close and personal and you are excellent!

Now we are all aware that several peeps participating in this years BOM will not be able to finish their quilts before midnight due to reasons beyond their control ...

and in these cases I will still be offering .....

A) Elvistoo's services to make them a label if they wish and

B) to award them TSP's Prize winners badge or patch on completion of their quilt before the end of January 2021.

Sorry
Yes applique label saying Bjay 2020 - bright yellow embroidery on - erm - pale green maybe

just reached squares out of storage box - they don't seem to blend together - may end up being 5 x 3 or  may end up being 3 x 4. All because there is one I eally don't like and I haven't anymore green swirly fabric.
i know I'm way behind but I will get there in the end (I think)

Needs

I havent forgotten you Darling ... Well yes, I think I did ...   :|

Levi label in Italic font was it???

Elvistoo is coming out next month ... I promise ... and I will get on with several outstanding projects/pieces

Have I mislaid any one else's requests???

@WendyW , your quilt is beautiful and where is the amateurish quilting? The close ups look great to me. You gave yourself an extra problem trying to arrange front and back, but the resulting pattern and colours are lovely.  :loveit:

@WendyW I think your colours work really well together - you've drawn the whole thing together by the way you've done the borders and sashing. And as for the quilting, it looks good to me. But what do I know? I still have my L-plates on  :P

@Iminei Yes please the label as you said.

Thank you for giving me more time :loveit:

No idea when sewing machine will be returned, beginning to feel lost without it.

I will cut out the border for BOM quilt, maybe the horizontal sashing which I can sew on ancient Bernina :vintage:

@WendyW your quilt is great. Teh ink and lime green go well together. Love the borders as well.

Your colours are fabulous, @Sandra .  In fact, if your quilt goes missing, you could advise the police to review footage from the M6   :ninja:.

@Iminei Just had a thunk and the label would be good if it was on a bright green like the POP colour -no idea where I got pale green from!!
Must have been oing through an insipid phase!

Sandra, I always head for the bright colors as well. So does my daughter- and her daughter, but at 4 I wouldn't expect otherwise. It's not "ameteurish", just young at heart! It does tend to make decorating more difficult, but I have learned to use a neutral base palette and add changeable pops. If others don't like the brights, well, that's their problem!

My stitching does look decent in these pics, which has reassured me. At least the 20-foot rule is in working in my favor. Up close there are lots of  flaws, especially at the beginning and ends where I should have knotted by hand and buried the tails instead of backstitching, and I knew it at the time, but was getting down to the wire timewise and not liking the overall look, so I really didn't care at that point.

@Iminei Thank you for offering us the labels, it's a sweet extra to offer us that, but I'm going to pass.  I think I've only labeled one quilt ever, and that was an afterthought when we inherited it back, in memory of the person it had been given to.

I never label quilts either @WendyW ....or name them  :S

I never label quilts either @WendyW ....or name them  :S

The naming of them makes no sense to me, with the possible exception of one entered in a show. Identifying block names for ease of someone else finding the pattern is sensible, but personal names for something going on my bed or for having picnics on has no appeal whatsoever to me.

Same here. I've never made a quilt label in my life, so unlikely to start now. I never consider my quilts worthy of labelling for future generations anyway.

Dear lot, you guys are wonderful, and your quilts for the BOM are absolutely stunning. Sadly, I didn't make it...life has been complicated at best, with a very fragile business to shore up and the added excitment/stress of hopefullyifnothingfallsthroughthistime...buying the house we have been waiting for, for the past five years. Yes I know that sounds obsessive, and  a long story lies therein. The upshot of it is zero free time, until today. Literally. We usually close over the Christmas school break, but this year had needed to maintain the minimum, so little in the way of rest. This, by the way, is no whinge, and i am not unhappy with the status quo (stressed, massively) but I did think that I needed to explain to you all, why I sorta had to give up and disappear off the threads in October...
I am happy I participated, even if I couldn't finish in the time...sounds pretty weak, one simple quilt over a 12 month period, but life has just played out that way.  Having said that, I have learned a lot, and will continue to do so, as I WILL finish, and when I do, large or small, I will bring it on here for you to see.

And finally the last block is quilted.  This is not a BOM block but is one that RJR-38 posted about.

It will be assembled as soon as I can find the fabric for the joining strips.

Oh how lovely to be sewing again.
It took a while to get into the n'swing' but nw the final column is finished and the joining strips are cut and ready to go/

What a difference to the machine. The walking foot feels as if it is gripping and the footplate teeth are doing their job.
Wouldn't mind getting rainbow quilt back -erm -naa!
No slipping tension all lovely and even - can't say same about quilt but I'm not perfect.
Hoping to have it done and dusted by the weekend now  :D
