Welcome to The Sewing Place’s year-long stash-busting challenge.
There are no rules or regulations. This is about you deciding how you want to stashbust, defining your own goals and cheering others on along the way.

This thread will run all year, and conclude at the end of 2021.Whether you choose to diligently stashbust along and record your numbers or just join in the thread is up to you.

I am ready to start sewing. My goal is A Year of Sewing What I Have and to sew 50-75 meters of fabric mostly from the stash in 2021.

When I looked at what I have stashed, I need to sew down more of the doll's fabrics, Christmas cottons, and other craft cottons. I dug out a notebook and have jotted down a long list of items that I want to make this year. From that I made January's list of items I want to sew. I need to buy nothing this month which is great as I'm not sure when the local quilt shop will open again for in-store shopping.

I have set aside the 24-26th of each month to sew Christmas which will include gifts and the Christmas cottons. I may sew for Halloween also but it isn't on the radar for the months that have 31 days. I'm also trying to include 1 to 2 machine embroidery projects a month whether they are for Christmas or otherwise.

My first project will use up .75 meter of fabric. It is cut out and ready to sew this afternoon.

I'm in.  Definitely, I need to make a list or I'll forget something important.

I'm in!  I've already cut out a toile for plaid pyjamas but still tweaking the fit... I also cut out a viscose/rayon or somesuch manmade fibre blouse - tbh, I think it's damaged my new scissors... :scream:

Not sure which side is the right side, but I'll decide later today - fabric has been in the stash since Adam was a lad, so unless there's a lable I've no hope of knowing the fabric content, or which side to use.

@Morzel, I’m doing baskets with embroidery on them, though they don’t need to be done that way. For DD I’m doing one I’ll fill with sewing notions, some special piping I’ll make her and a few other things. Cat and dog will each get one for their treats and toys. Another could be filled with chocolate or coffee or??  Find fabric to match. I’ll post the site later on and maybe we should do a Christmas gift ideas thread too.

@Ann I got one of those sewn basket gifted once, it is used by my daughter for toiletries... Good idea to reproduce.

@b15erk do a burn test to narrow down the fiber content. As for right side, look at the tenter hook holes along the selvage. They are usually slightly pushed to one side or the other. The side they protrude on is the intended right side. But, if you can't tell which is the right side easily always use the one you like. Just be consistent as sometimes the reverse side reflects light differently.

Week 1 of January is done here. I used up 1 meter of fabric from the stash. I made this dress which took me a week to cut out and sew. Lots of slow work on this one.

I also had to do the cuffs on the sleeves 4 times. Twice for each sleeve. I turned in the wrong part of the sleeve placket once and then turned in both ends of the sleeve placket ends once.  :faints: I need to check twice before sewing on the cuffs.

When I finished the dress, I immediately cut out piping for DD. Enough for one shirt (a fat quarter will make just over 3 meters of piping). I was done in an hour and left the sewing room relaxed from the project.

Next up is a test pattern for an Edwardian period dress for the dolls. Fabrics are chosen and the pattern is printed so I hope to start this tomorrow afternoon.

Went through my stash this week to reorganize and rethink what I have. I used about a yard and a third of green velvet to cover a board on which I display my necklace collection. Also bagged up about 23 yards of fabric to give to the daughter of one of the local firemen. She sews a lot of cool stuff on a very small budget and I'm happy to contribute. Next: jammie pants for all.

Just like my yarn/fibre stash I don't do yardaged/meterage amounts, I just know I have a lot!

My aim is to be totally "cold sheep" this year (i.e. no fabric, yarn, or fibre purchased) unless it's for a specific project that I'll start right away. We'll see how I hold out, but I've got more than enough for pretty much any project I might want to make.

@dyedinthewool, I don't keep track of how much yarn I knit up, I know I've knit a lot and have been gifted a lot. This year I am keeping the wrapper/tag off the balls of yarn so I can estimate how many grams I've knit. I saw that on a group that is mainly crocheters. Thought it was a great idea.

We each have different ideas of what we want to do with our stash. My goal is to sew mine down as I want to have very little on hand and buy what I need. I keep track of it as I want to know how much I have bought over the last 5 years. In the past two years I've sewn nearly 150 meters of stash which makes my stash larger than I thought. This year my focus is sewing what I have on hand and make very few purchases. I know I will buy fabric for certain projects but my goal it to keep those purchases to a minimum. I will track how many meters I buy and what I do buy must be sewn immediately.

Good luck on going "cold sheep". I'm trying to do this as much as possible also.

@b15erk, that is a beautiful blouse. I quite like it.

I am still working on the test pattern. I got the bodice ready to start on the collar. The bodice had 4 pieces plus 2 facings. What a lot of work. No pictures to post but they are coming.

It's only a small amount used, but I've made 3 pairs of knickers with all fabric and elastic from stash. Photos in this blog post (https://dyedinthewool.wordpress.com/2021/01/15/a-quick-fo-round-up/).

Not sure how much yardage they used up but those panelled ones could end up getting rather fun and funky as I have smaller and smaller amounts of fabric left!

I gave away two medium-sized trash bags of new quilt fabric. Not that virtuous though. I was given 7 huge bags primarily to give to my neighbor by a quilty friend back in I think August or September. This was the last of it. I kept a few pieces  to add to what I previously kept. I need to sort through again, see what works together and with fabric I have then give her most of the rest. Next month.

Mid month and I've sewn 1.8 meters of fabric (2 doll dresses and a length of piping). The second doll dress is done and I'm happy with it.

Next on the list is a wall hanging which takes .35 meter of fabric. It has been sitting on the stash shelf for months now and needs to be done. Then a purse and a basket. If any time is left in the month, I will do more piping for DD.

I've started to plan out next month's list and need to look at what I have on hand to make the items I have listed. I know one project will need buttons.

@Ann , that dress is so pretty!

I've managed to use another couple of metres from the stash - not great quality I have to say, but still fabric.  I've also nearly cut out a sweater, which will add another couple of metres.

Still not made an appreciable difference, but it has to start showing soon...

@b15erk that is a nice top you made.

I started on project #4 and have to pick the embroidery out of one flower as I used the wrong thread  :scream:  . I am hoping I can salvage it as it means buying more fabric and maybe one spool of thread. :headbang:

While rooting in the stash, I see I have more cottons that I had thought I had  and will have to step up to plate to get it sewn down. While looking for my purse fabric, I found bias strips cut out to make DD more piping. Put it on the table to be sewn, maybe half this month and half in another month as there is a lot of strips.

@Lachica, thank you very much.

I'm having less luck with the project I'm on now. Picked up sewing thread to embroider a flower and am having to rip it all out. Hoping I haven't done anything wrong or I will have to buy a piece of fabric to replace it as it is all I have. I will pick at it carefully again today.

I finished the wall hanging yesterday. Took me 2 hours to pick out the one flower but I was able to salvage the project. Happy to have this one done.

Next up is a bag for me. I got the pattern for Christmas, have had the fabric for almost 4 years so it is time to use it up. So far, I've only used fabrics from the stash. I'm quite proud of myself for doing that.

@Morzel, thank you. It took me quite a while to choose the red fabric and then it took a while to find it. I have a lot of fabric in the doll's stash and it got put into the wrong area. I need a day to sort it all out again.

I'm ready to start the bag today. I want to trace the pattern pieces onto pellon and save the original pattern. That will take me one afternoon to do. But I'm ready.

Yesterday I made more piping for DD. Pink fairy frost fabric she sent me over a year ago. It was a larger piece so I only made half of it for her. The rest will get done later.

I make piping as it is easy and relaxing. When I have a lazy afternoon, I will cut the strips for the next batch and then I sew them when I need a break from regular sewing.

@Ann do you cut the strips on bias or grain?  The piping looks thick -what does your daughter use it for? (No, not curious... ) I have a Dritz tool which I really like to cut the seam allowance for the piping at exactly 1cm - this way the piping has the same SA as my garment fabric and I don't have to worry about anything.

@Morzel, I cut the strips on the bias. The cording I use is about the same size as the cording in most packaged piping. This might be a tad thicker as it is hard to find at the moment. I also have a piping ruler that cuts the SA to 1/4" which is the same as packaged piping. It fits under yokes and button bands perfectly. DD makes western shirts that she sells and the custom piping is used on some of her shirts. I make her 3.25 - 4.0 meters when I do piping for her. It is fast and easy and relaxing to make.

I’m a little late to the party on this one but declaring my intention to sew 50 metres this year! Last year’s effort was derailed by COVID lockdown sucking all my creativity  :'(
Last year I also downloaded the Cora fabric stash app and spent hours photographing and cataloging my stash. So my stash currently sits at 305 metres/188 pieces... not including my silk fabrics for painting on, and a few other bits and bobs. I also recently moved house! So unpacking all that fabric has given me a renewed desire to make things from it! There’s no many pieces in there that I love.
Still a bit of stuff to unpack into my sewing room, and a quilt to make for my best friend’s baby... then looking forward to making some things for me again!

I had a few days of exhaustion, a good cry, and am feeling better. That set me back on my sewing a few days. But I did get another project done for my Christmas sewing section. I made this little fabric basket which is 6" square. It is mine and I will find something to put in it (artificial plant as we have a cat) and display it next year.

I start again on the purse tomorrow. Not happy with it but I will finish it and use it. It is the outer fabric that I am not pleased with as it has too much polyester in it. I do want to make it again in a cotton.

@Ann   Hope you feel a little better now - these are tough times.

I love your fabric basket, and I love the idea of sewing Christmas things early, it takes the pressure off. It would save last minute panics for me as I know I'll have at least 4 Christmas stockings to make next year, and they take a long time to make.

Another top made from the stash.  Like the Orange ruffles, it is a first garment/toile , and I'm now looking for suitable fabric to make the garments 'proper'.  Nothing much is turning up in the stash, but I'm sure something will turn up.

@b15erk, I a feeling much better. It has been hard even if we are one of the safest places in the world to live. Everyone spends so much time doing the right thing to keep everyone safe. As of yesterday we only have 15 known cases in the province (1M people) and only 1 new case in the last 3 days.  It's thanks to everyone following the rules. But, it is exhausting to keep it up day in and day out. I know I'm not the only one who is feeling this way.

Thank you the nice words on the basket. The next one is perking in my mind. I need to get a big jar (for cookie mix), cookie cutter, a wooden spoon and a couple of tea towels so I can see what size I need to make next. Thinking of ideas keeps me busy and out of trouble. I know I will have to buy the outer fabric for it but it is a gift so I don't mind. I'm thinking of some type of unique fabric. I do have the lining fabric and it will be perfect for this basket.

OHHHHH!!! I just saw your top and I like the toile fabric. It is really nice. Here's hoping you find something in the stash to make the proper garment. Looking forward to seeing what you make.

Following on from my attempt to sort some fabric out on Saturday I came across a UFO and you won't believe how long it's been there, only since 1982 (could be a couple of years earlier) :|............ It's a Butterick shirt style blouse already cut out in a cream poly with a design woven through it, pattern is a single size 8 so I'm hoping it could still fit. I'd go for a 6 these days but it's a slim fitting style. I think I may have a go at finishing it sometime this year.

I also found a finished tapestry that was supposed to become a cushion cover. I have the backing fabric and piping cord all ready to do it. The also dates back to the late 80s, but was worked in the early 90s. Design was from Woman's Weekly magazine. I'll have a go with that too hopefully.

This weekend I finished 25 quilt blocks, plus a back support pillow, plus two blocks that will be use to decorate a tote bag. Counting the muslin base, that accounts for about four yards of assorted fabrics. I'll sew the blocks together today and maybe get the binding on. I decided not to put a backing on the quilt since it will hang on the wall behind my desk chair to act as a background during Zoom conferences and programs.

Next on the stash-busting agenda: all that flannel I bought a couple of years ago to make jammie pants for everyone in the family.

@b15erk, I'd like to sew up 80 meters again this year with minimal purchases just to see what I have left in the stash. I am not overly worried about supporting the shop I buy at as they have done well during the pandemic. The lady made money with creative ideas she put in place.

I will be able to shop in the spring when DD wants more fabric but I want to refrain from buying fabric. I will need other supplies though such as interfacing, fusible fleece, lace, thread, needles.

After finishing the test pattern and doing more piping for DD, I took 2 days off due to tiredness and being out for DGS's birthday dinner. Today I decided to make a Christmas shopping bag. @MitchOfTheNorth, put the idea into my head. I used 1 meter of fabric and .5 meter of Deco Bond interfacing. I had bought the fabric 4 years ago when it was deeply discounted and really had no plan on what to make out of it. I took it out a couple of times looking at it when the comment was made and I am totally in love with it.

I also sent DD a parcel and in it I put 3.6 meters of fabric from the stash. It is such a nice feeling to have it gone and to be used up by her. She will make shirts to sell out of the pieces. Not sure what I will make tomorrow. I need to think about it tonight while knitting.

Last day of the month so I'm reporting. This month 9.35 meters of fabric is gone from the stash (used or given away). Only 1 meter was purchased in February. There is 17.1 meters gone and 2.5 meters bought to date. Not too bad.

We are back not being able to go into a large shopping area as the cases of the virus have risen quickly there. The quilt shop I go to not far from here hasn't closed yet. I'm surprised as she usually closes when the large shopping area becomes restricted. I can get notions from the quilt shop which is convenient. The restrictions have us staying home which means I may or may not buy a bit of fabric this coming month.

Not much stash busting so far for me I’m afraid, as I had to make a quilt for my friend whose baby arrived at the end of Feb.
But this week with some of my mojo feeling like it’s coming back, I decided to make a quick stash buster and make up 2 pair of flanelette pyjama pants.

Nothing ground breaking or award winning, just 2 comfy and warm pair of pj pants! I like to make a mock cuff around the bottom which allows me to squeeze them out of 2 metres of fabric, and also use both elastic and a draw string cord in the waist.

4 metres down!

I'm packing up some fabrics to give to a friend and her teen daughter.  The fabrics that they don't want will be donated to the local high school.  This will make room for the new fabrics that I bought.

So, there are now 3 large garbage bags full of fabric for my friend.  I was fairly ruthless and measured as I put it in the bag - there was a total of 77.5 meters  :faints:.  Most of it was fabric that I was gifted by my mom when she cleared out her fabrics at least 8 years ago.  There are a few pieces that I'm giving to sister#3 for her new granddaughter.  I still need to measure those up.

So, I went back through and pulled out another 9 meters for my friend - so a total of 86.5.  And 4.5 meters for sister#3.

@MitchOfTheNorth, what a great haul for your friend and sister. I'm sure it will be greatly appreciated.

I put 30 meters into the thrift shop boxes when I cleaned the sewing room. I also put some into a tub for DD which I will be mailing to her mid April.

Though March isn't over, I've been sewing some every day. When I finish my present project, I will have sewn 7 meters this month. I've also worked done some samples on the doll's couture course and finished up a project that I embroidered in February. The total without the donation is 21.3 meters sewn of which I am happy about. I did buy 2 meters of fabric for my new knitting bag and 3.8 meters of interfacing. One meter of fabric and 1.8 meters of interfacing was used in the knitting bag.

I have started April's list of items to sew and I'm going to be doing a quite a bit of practicing on my new machine that is enroute to me. Most of the sewing in April will be on the new machine while I learn how to use it.

I continued with the ruthless de-stash - up to 112.5 meters.

@MitchOfTheNorth, you have been ruthless in your fabric purging. Way to go.

I made another grocery bag which DD says she is going to use as a lunch bag. The fabric was bought a couple of years ago when I saw it in the store. I cross hatched it to batting as I experimented with my new Juki sewing machine. It took me 4 afternoons of sewing to get this bag done. But, I learned a lot about the sewing machine while making it.

Overall, I am pleased with the results and 1.7 meters of fabric and batting are off the stash shelving unit.

All my stash is so old and unorganized it's hard for me to remember how much pieces are in yardage/meterage, but I think my stashdown goal is going to be by weight- I'd like to give away/use up/maybe sell at least 10 pounds of fabric. Stretch goal- 20 lbs!
A blanket of flannel and minky would make this easy, but I also have lots of 1 yd cuts of things like poly charmeusel for a challenge.

Someday I'm gonna use up 'my weight in stash' and then I'll throw myself a little party  :cake:

Late to the party but I'm willing to join in!
So far this year I have made two mens waistcoats, a bag, a taggy and half a shirt using everything from stash. I'm trying to do more sewing now after a year of inertia where I couldn't get motivated.
I also am trying to use my scraps and have been watching you tube videos on crumb quilting although I'm more likely to make a bag than a full size quilt!
Sew at a quick guess I've probably used 6m tops. Hmmm, better get a shift on.

We are nearing the end of April and this month I have sewn 5.1 meters of fabric. Most of the sewing has been small items - masks, doll clothes, potholders. All the fabric came from the stash.

We are starting day 2 of a full lockdown and I bought 4 meters of fabric before it happened. I needed some fabric for the 2 weeks we are to be at home in our bubble as the store shut its doors to instore shopping on Tuesday.  I'm set for quite a long time; maybe until June.

I've just cut out another Gardener shirt blouse which used up 1.5m of fabric which has been marinating for 7 or 8 years, plus all the fabric I've been using in my coaster experiments and the cushion cover I made so I'm going to say I've used 2m of fabric and can therefore claim 8m now!!
This challenge is just the impetus I needed to get me going.

I've come to the conclusion that I need to sew faster - maybe I don't have a fabric problem - maybe it's a productivity problem.

I'm working on a shirt for DH and hope to have it done by the end of the month. That will mean 5.75 meters of fabric sewn in June and all from the stash. Not as much as I had hoped for but it's better than nothing. I've bought no fabric this month either which is a bonus.

@MitchOfTheNorth, I think I have a productivity problem also as I'm outside a lot right now.

I forgot to report that I sewed 5.75 meters of fabric in June. I also bought .5 meter of fabric for a doll's wardrobe.

This month I've slowed down as I'm outside more so my amount of fabric used up will be less than 5 meters. It may be less than 3 meters. If I get a doll's quilt finished before the end of the month, I will have to buy fabric for my next 2 projects. I have the feature fabric but need to get the coordinating fabrics for them.

I finally gave my sister the fabric that I picked out for her to sew for her granddaughter.  I made a sweatshirt for myself.  It's warm and cozy.  I need to pick out another lighter weight fabric to test out the pattern.  I think the first fabric was a bit too heavy because it doesn't hang quite right.  But I'm still going to wear it - it's perfect for cuddling up on the couch.

I've sewn 2.3 meters so far this month and hope to have a day of cutting 1.3 meters of fabric tomorrow. I have a project that needs my attention as it requires a lot of quilting. I'd like to have it off the table by the end of the month. Then it's a quilt for DD's cat. I am looking forward to making it as it is going to be very simple - squares and a border or two. Nothing to purchase as I have it all in the stash. Hurrah for that.

I've picked up the pace of sewing.  In the last 3 weeks, I've made a nightie and a floral dolman t-shirt for myself, a teal t-shirt for DD2 and 5 masks for DD1.  I've got a new dolman t-shirt pattern pinned out.  That works out to another 8 meters of fabric used up.

Hmmm, I haven't been doing too well these last few months. Mother's illness, death and funeral have certainly taken my sewing mojo away. Any sewing I have been doing is oddments using up scraps so I can't really claim any yardage. I've no real plans in the pipeline either.  ><

Well, I really liked the new dolman pattern (Jalie 3352) - so, I cut out another 2 today - a blue ikat-type and a print of cranes and scarlet ibis.  As I've got a serious lack of clothing and I'm sick of doing laundry, I've kicked it into high gear.  I'm going to keep sewing while the mojo lasts.  Once I get these 2 done, I'll trace out a different pattern and if I like the first one, I'll make a few more.

@realale , the mojo will come back in it's own time.  While I was grieving, I had honestly forgotten how much I loved sewing.

I'm chugging along in the sewing room. I made DD's cat a quilt and used up 3.2 meters of fabric from the stash (batting included).

I have also tested 2 doll patterns and bound a dog's blanket/quilt I had made last month. This has been a good month for me. Totals at the end of the month.

I didn't do the totals for August.

Sewn - 8.35 meters
Bought - 1.3 meters and it's all sewn up

Septembers totals

Sewn - 7.65 meters
Bought - 1.2 meters with .6 meters of it sewn up.

Year To Date

Sewn - 54 meters
Donated - 28.2 meters
Bought 15 meters of which there is 2.1 meters added to the stash.

This year I have bought the least amount of fabric ever and I've sewn most of it.

Since my last post here, I've made another Jalie 3352 with a Halloween candy cotton lycra knit.  I've made both girls a Halloween t-shirt. DD1's is Jalie 3667 with a Hocus Pocus front panel, and purple and white back and sleeves.  I shortened the body length by 2 inches.  DD2's is a McCall's pattern with cereal killer fabric - bowls of cereal with blood splatter and a front panel of Mike Myers (Halloween).  I've made another Jalie 3667 for me with a Halloween print.  For the next ones, I'll shorten the sleeves a little.  I figure it's just more efficient to make multiples of the same pattern if I like it.

Just finished a Kimono for GD, and realised that it definitely qualifies being on here.  This was made from the leftovers of a Second hand Duvet Set bought from FB.  There was absolutely loads of fabric in it, and I bought it about 3/4 years ago because I loved the colours.  I've already made a dressing gown for DD, and now Lilya can be mini-mummy.

I've still got a little left, which may end up being nightwear of some description - depends what fits.

So, Lilya's Kimono approx 2mtrs.

@b15erk , I love the kimono.  I've finished off another Halloween t-shirt - this one co-ordinates with DD2's.  But I have Jason (of Friday the 13th) on the front and a little quote on the back - "I just stepped on a cornflake I guess that makes me a cereal killer".  So, another 2 meters of fabric has transitioned from my sewing room to my dresser.  It's like caterpillars becoming butterflies.

@b15erk, love the kimono.

I had a busy month. I sewed 10.5 meters of fabric up but I bought 9.5 meters. Some was needed for October's projects and a bit is sitting on the stash shelf. There is a piece to make DGS a pair of pajama pants for Xmas, a piece for a quilt for the cat, and broadcloth for doll clothes. I use quite a bit of white broadcloth when sewing for the dolls.

I need to finish a bag for DSIL for his electronic items that he takes to work. I started it in October but had to set it aside due to Halloween, a reaction to the flu shot that left me aching all over for 3 days, and a test pattern that had to be done. I hope to get back to it today. It should only take 2 afternoons to finish as the piping is done.

December - 5.9 meters sewn and 4 meters bought for quilts.

I didn't do too bad in 2021.

Total Fabric Sewn - 72.4 meters

Total Fabric Bought - 31.5 meters

I am working on my goals for 2022 and, once I finish making masks, will be cleaning the sewing room and starting on my to do list I've written and rewritten.
