Title: May's BOM - Baby Bargello
Post by: Iminei on May 01, 2020, 09:37:23 AM
We have entered the Merry, Merry Month of May

and I thought we might ramp it up a bit
so this Month we have a TWO Parter ...

Both blocks use the same technique, in a slightly different way ....

There is also, for the eager beavers amongst us, a THIRD part
to this months BOM !!!

This is optional but by Autumn you will need to have all your
blocks layered, quilted and ready to assemble.

A tutorial that will be extremely useful to you this month is The Perfect Points Tut (https://thesewingplace.org.uk/index.php/topic,12.0.html)

Why not gather some gash fabric together,
any two high contrasting colours will do, and have a go before you start?

For Part Three of Mays Block you may find THIS (https://thesewingplace.org.uk/index.php/topic,860.0.html) tutorial useful

Do read right through the May's BOM before you start!!!

So without further ado ...

here we are at the FOURTH BOM of the 2020!

There will be Twelve 12" blocks for this years BOM:
Some months you will have two blocks to make and some only one.

In October I will guide you through layering and quilting your blocks
and in November I will take you through  assembling them, using a QAYG method,
into a fabulous lap or cot sized quilt (or even a series of comfy cushions.)

And everyone who finishes the year with a completed quilt (or full series of cushions)
will receive an exclusive The Sewing Place Prize Winners Badge

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

I have chosen a monochrome theme with pops of colour for my quilt,
you may choose whatever colourway/theme you like ...
Brights, plains, patterns, pastels, neutrals ... the choice is yours!

MAY's BOM (https://photos.app.goo.gl/8rHvojXrvPLiddpQ7)

As ever when you click on the link, select the first picture,
and click on the i icon to bring up the destructions
on the right side of your screen.

Do read through The Basic Basics Thread before you start.

Please post pics of your blocks each month and at the end of the year I will compose an album for the archives

Oooh - nice!  I've never tried bargello, but I suspect it could be addictive.

I can't do anything other than fiddle with the fabrics at the moment because someone is having a Zoom meeting on my cutting table (alright, he thinks it's the kitchen table), next door to my second sewing room (he calls it the dining room).

@Iminei , @Iminei , can you clarify something, please?  From this pic

if I wanted to use different fabric for the checkerboard block and the bargello block, would a strip from a fat quarter be long enough without joining it?

Thanks so much for these.  Loving them.  I love strip piecing.  Looking forward to doing both of these.
Title: Re: May's BOM
Post by: wrenkins on May 01, 2020, 12:48:00 PM
I reckon a strip needs to be minimum 15" long to finish at 12.5" @Pearl but feel free to ignore me.

YAY a bargello - O know what I'm doing here - she says confidently BUT will the patchwork police approve???

Hardest is getting fabric AND my pop is green and i don't think I have enough as i use scraps.

Now do I experiment with a facemask first or get going on the bOM, that is the question?

Forest green but not too bright leaning towards dark sage- see my BOM - with a small pattern - stars or something (not spots)

Well I have sorted out 3 sets of 6 fabrics , asked Mrbeej which one and he chose the one with  the colours that weren't quite right

I am a little confused are we making 1 block and choosing which style or are we making 2 ?

I’ve just read the instructions and think we make two blocks - one of each.

I’ve never done anything like this before as I usually cut all the small pieces and then sew them together so looking forward to doing it.

TWO blocks this month ladies .... with an option of a third if you want to go down the miniature route.

And a lil bit of homework with the layering and quilting ... By Autumn we need all your blocks to be ready to assemble so quilting the odd one when you have time will be an excellent use of all the extra time we currently find ourselves with.
Title: Re: May's BOM
Post by: wrenkins on May 02, 2020, 09:07:26 AM
My bargello does not want to be made!
First it measured itself wrong and then I sewed three, yes THREE, strips of pieces with no bobbin. Did you hear the bad words?!?!?! I reckon that if I ever do manage to get bobbin and soul together it'll come out somewhere nearish to 10.5" maybe. Who knows? I can always add a bit design element on.
At the moment it's on the table and I look at it as I pass by.  8)  :[

Post by: Lowena on May 02, 2020, 10:33:47 AM
@Iminei do we have to do qayg? Can we just make it properly the usual way?
I only ask because my blocks are rarely accurate enough to do qayg easily. They are often unsquare squares.... A design feature which can't be disguised when qayging
Title: Re: May's BOM
Post by: Celia on May 02, 2020, 10:42:00 AM
Thanks @Iminei    I am all started my tube is made and I am ready to go. Really like the idea of this one.

@Lowena i think you could be right about less sewing machines, I have put all of mine away except one and I am getting on better and have more enthusiasm.  I can’t say just one machine as the one I am using is straight stitch only so I might need another one at some time.

Another plus point is I don’t have to remember which machine I used for the last block so hopefully the seam allowances will all be the same.
Title: Re: May's BOM
Post by: wrenkins on May 02, 2020, 10:46:17 AM
Update. Freshly bobbined and sewn.
I now have some bananoing which I'm ignoring and it's measuring 12.5" here and there with three more seams to take out and the outside seam allowances of course.
It's all going terribly well.  0_0

ps when I said I was going to bog on till my nose bleeds I didn't mean it literally but guess what? I had a massive nose bleed in the night and had to sleep with the light on (cos that'll work to stop nose bleeds  :[).

Post by: Iminei on May 02, 2020, 10:50:58 AM
One reason I have chosen to make this years BOM a QAYG project is because a lot of people have asked me how to join QAYG blocks over the years ....

but also because a lot of our wonderful 2020 BOM'ers are relatively new to the Darkside and the one thing everyone wants to do when they start P&Q is to make something substantial .... like a double bed quilt! ... I know I did (waaaaay, waaaay back in the mid nineties ... and we know what a nightmare that became!)

The trouble with that is, for a newbie, a double quilt is almost designed to put them off ... even with 7 years of experience now, I could not quilt a double bed top in one piece on my machine, its too big, unwieldy and frankly beyond me.

With QAYG you can twiddle a 12" block around under your presser foot to your hearts content and with a lil care achieve some really lovely results ... True... towards the end of assembling the quilt, it can be a bit unwieldy (double bed sized) but it is still achievable.

And with the size of quilt we will have made at the end of this year, 36" x 48" unless you want to add a border, everyone will have something lovely, finished and usable.

You are far more experienced than some of our BOMers Lowena, and can also hand quilt beautifully ... so you finish your quilt as you wish .. In fact maybe you could make a Hand Quilting tutorial for later this year???

I hope everyone is ok with Mays blocks? and also the layering and quilting process shown at the end of the tut.
Title: Re: May's BOM
Post by: Acorn on May 02, 2020, 10:57:08 AM
Absolutely OK @Iminei - and I'm delighted to have it as QAYG, because it's something I've wanted to try for ages, and I suspect I wouldn't have dived in without a push!

Am I right in thinking that the quilting needs to stay a reasonable distance from the edge of the block?  How far would you say?
Title: Re: May's BOM
Post by: Iminei on May 02, 2020, 11:01:21 AM
No ... you can quilt right over the edges if you want to ... but bear in mind that when you trim the block to size (12 1/2" UF) you would be cutting your threads

Keep the 1/4" seam allowance around the edges of the block in mind and you'll be fine.

I have my twisted Bargello quilt to quilt and have an idea of what I want to do so quilting a 12 inch block will be good practice, I think.

Thanks @Iminei. When I started in 2012 I started with small items like cushion covers and placemats but I understand that people may be more ambitious than I was  :D
I've never got on with a walking foot and although my machine will compensate for bulk I much prefer to hand quilt large items so that's what I will do. Thanks again x

Title: Re: May's BOM
Post by: Acorn on May 02, 2020, 15:43:02 PM
I've done both - I haven't squared them off properly because they have come up a little bit short, so I need to have a good think about what I'm going to do there.     It may be do-able with very careful narrow seams.

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

I put the bright colour in at the wrong point on the bargello one, so it doesn't really look like a heart.  I may have to think of another quilting design when I get to that point.

I still can't decide how many colours and how many fabrics I will need overall. It's driving me mad!!
Background....or not ??
Plain....or patterns??
Same fabrics for each blocks..... or not??
How many colours??
It's no good telling me it's my decision..... I follow precise instructions, I don't make fluid decisions  :|
How did you go about choosing?
I can't afford to buy special fabrics as, for once, I have a plastic box half full of fqs and slightly bigger pieces to use up.
Do I actually need larger quantities of fabrics?
Help me please.......it's driving me mad!!
I've discarded the blocks I've done but can't start anew yet.

I still can't decide how many colours and how many fabrics I will need overall. It's driving me mad!!
Background....or not ??  I'm not using any of my background fabric this month but I am including white so it's not too crazy
Plain....or patterns??  Are you not using your rainbow colours.  That would be really effective.  Pelenna patchwork have a rainbow bargello cushion which has lots of colours but you could use six or twelve.
Same fabrics for each blocks..... or not??  I'm not because I like scrappy but I am using all Alison Glass fabrics.
How many colours??  All of them!
It's no good telling me it's my decision..... I follow precise instructions, I don't make fluid decisions  :|
How did you go about choosing?  I knew I wanted to use Alison Glass so I bought about 12 fat quarters and then I bought some more, lol.
I can't afford to buy special fabrics as, for once, I have a plastic box half full of fqs and slightly bigger pieces to use up.
Do I actually need larger quantities of fabrics?  You need a stash, lol.
Help me please.......it's driving me mad!!  This is your hobby.  You do it for fun.  (I'm speaking to myself here too.  I have been known to refer to my quilting as "work")
I've discarded the blocks I've done Why?  Are you sure?  If I were you, I'd get some white on white background fabric and stick with the rainbow theme.  For my bargello block, I'm going to have a narrower colour palette, but don't hold me to that.  but can't start anew yet.

I was like that for April @Lowena. I could not get the colours sorted in my head so I just flung something together and it turned out fine.
I set aside a little pile of fabric at the start and unless something drastic happens I'm sticking to those. I may run out so in that case I'll sub in something similar.
I'm using it as a chance to try something different and to improve my accuracy and techniques so while it may not be a thing of beauty, I'll have learnt something by the end of it. So far I've made geese and bargello...both things I've thought about doing many times and didn't bother.

Interesting- have just read the instructions. I’ve never done Bargello before and was thinking to myself, ‘why do you sew a tube only to unpick it? ‘. Then I read the next bit and all became clear  :P

@Lowena Are you still confused? Don't see what's wrong with the blocks you've done so far, maybe you're overthinking it .
Fish out the 'stash', sort it into lights and darks -if you have mediums, assign them to one pile or the other for now- you can always change your mind. Look at what you've used so far in the other blocks and select some of those fabrics then add some new ones. Do this for each new block, so that all the colours will link up. If it looks too busy, remember that sashing will calm it all down, and a collection of blocks will distract the eye from the one you really hate. If you're not sure about a selection, go and do something else for half an hour then come back and have another look. Sometimes it takes 2 or 3 goes to hit on the right combo, sometimes you just have to go with the least worst. Sometimes what it really needs is a dash of green, but it's your quilt so you're allowed to leave it out! ;)

Never has  :faints: been more necessary!

I made a right hames of my bargello so I added some scraps to the sides and they weren't big enough so off they came and I patched up some more scraps and sewed one on upside down! I mean really! It's not that difficult.  >< Sake!

I'm covered in wee bits of rippings but my block is complete and I quite like it.

You're right about the sashing calming it down @Deafoldbat. I set my 5 blocks out beside each other and it was nuts. Veh veh busy!!!  :o I have a funny feeling I'm going to love this lil quilt.  <3

Thank you everyone.
My problem is that I only have one or at most 2 fqs of any one fabric, so it will look too bitty.
I can't use the fabrics in the rainbow blocks as they've been used up mostly. The blocks are much bigger than I'm used to pls bung for.
I'll have another look.

Done. And, guess what? They are 12.5 ins. square near enough
Which gives me a problem as the previous ones aren't. 12.5 ins that is.
Presumably before I start trying to QAYG I will have to make them all the same size?

Thank you, @Iminei , I had a great teacher.  Actually on the bargello, two points aren't perfect but they are symmetrical so I'm calling it a design feature  ;)

The Geese and the Steps are 12.25" so not too far out. The Log Cabin is only 10" because I didn't do enough rows. I could do another round but may need advice on the colours. I have a couple of ideas.

I wouldnt worry about a 1/4" difference ...

Just sew an extremely scant ...1/8" ... seam allowance on each side of  the affected blocks and you'll be fine.

I found some black stuff (I don't really do black and I think it might be polycotton  -<) and I've cut big squares for backing.  :S
Anyhoo the blocks look great with the black frame so that might end up as my sashing too. I'm getting more excited by the day. I thought I'd have gone right off the whole idea by now but it seems to be improving with age growing on me.  0_0
@Pearl the nice thing about that block is that you can stick bits on and make them look as if they belong.  :ninja:  if you put them on the right way up that is...

Post by: Kenora on May 05, 2020, 17:32:19 PM
This is my bargello effort. It's OK but not really what I wanted. I was hoping to achieve more definition between the "spikes" like the lovely block that @wrenkins  made. I chickened out part way through as I was getting fed up working out how to make it 12.5" square. My accountancy training was absolutely no use whatsoever! :)

I also cheated a bit. The dark green corners were originally white but didn't look right to me, so I changed them.

Title: Re: May's BOM
Post by: wrenkins on May 05, 2020, 17:54:49 PM
@Bjay let's say 1/2"  8) but I did nine (+ 2 extra!?!?!?!) strips where @Iminei did seven. I think I did 1" 1.25" 1.5" etc. Because I had extra strips I had extra seams so it came up small hence the 'wings'.

@Kenora I noticed my big bright blue corners  :x but I just left them. They aren't so bad since the addition of my design element!  :ninja: That blue probably wasn't the best choice but it'll match the other blocks so it's staying.

I think I can safely say we're having a learning experience peeps!  0_0 0_0 0_0

All the May blocks so far have been wonderful but is anyone daring enough to make the smaller version of the bargello ???

All the blocks you make can be used in the finished quilt ... you may find when it comes to assembling the quilt you prefer a miniature variation to the original months block and choose that one for your top ...
you can still use the original on the back .... nothing will be wasted!!!
Title: Re: May's BOM
Post by: wrenkins on May 07, 2020, 08:55:24 AM
I did something similar on my mug rug but I'm not sure parallel really featured all that highly.  :[
(psst don't tell @Acorn I don't want her peering at it too hard). 8)
I could maybe practice on my retirement mug-rugs. I'm stumped for what to do with them too!
I'd love to try something fancy but I have neither the vision nor the skill!  0_0
Thanks @Pearl.

The thing about QAYG is the blocks are eminently twiddleable underneath your machines foot so you can quilt your heart out as you cant with a big quilt.

In the first pic the left green looks more bluey-green which I think is nicer with your checkerboard colours. However, I know from posting photos of my deliberations, that the colours in real life look different to those on a screen.

Yes, @Iminei I intend doing the previous blocks as well. Just about to start on April's today, although I don't know if the colours will all go with the May ones. Still, it'll be fine, the background will pull it all together. (perhaps).
I have to order some fat quarters before I do the log cabin ones as I am very low on light coloured fabric.

I finally got round to block 1 today. Turned out slightly small at just over 12” square, so I will need to take smaller seams in the Bargello. Here it is.  It’s  straighter than it looks, though in one place I’ve cut too close to the selvedge.   I’m not fixing it: quilt is only for me.

Here’s my attempt. Not sure it’s quite correct. I started following Imi’s block photo, without reading right to end and didn’t realise she still had the first strip on left to add, so my widest strip had to go on the left rather than right to make it look symmetrical  :. Mmmmm.... just noticed it’s not symmetrical. Maybe a bit of unpicking needed. :faints:

Thank you @Iminei. I just used a pair of compasses borrowed from DS and drew circles on tracing paper, then secured it to the block with pins and sewed through it.  I made some mistakes but I know what they are so hopefully won't repeat them.
Like @Lowena I find choosing the fabrics difficult but I want to stick with fabrics that I have and I'm happy with that.

Have quilted one but not the other for this month.
I think my daughter's put me off the bargello one, and I do prefer the chequerboard one. Maybe I'll have enough choice to omit that one when we've done them all.

Wasn't sure what to do on this one so I did a zig-zag line diagonally...a bit Ziggy Stardust with the red and the blue  0_0... and then filled the opposite corners with a bit of stitching.
Meh.

Ooopss!!

Oh Dear Ive gone massively off Piste with Mays Bargello block ...

Unhappy with my original which would have been fine as part of a quilt but was too clunky for a 12" block I made another which came in at 15" x 13" for some reason. This was the last block to be quilted and I was reasonably pleased with the result but how do I choose which bits of the block to trim away to get down to my 12 1/2" square required ....

So this is the original and the new
