In the wardrobe / Dungarees - guidance welcome
« on: January 29, 2022, 13:25:57 PM »
Hello everyone.  :)

I'd like to make a couple of sets of dungarees, mostly for garden work. This Heydey pattern is quite well reviewed, and also doesn't require hardware on the straps, so I'm leaning towards that.

For the first attempt, I've ordered some dark grey denim.

I'm very taken with this beetle fabric from Dalston Mill, but having ordered a sample I'm feeling unsure about whether it's suitable or whether something less stiff/with a bit of stretch is going to be more comfortable. Advice gratefully received, or I will probably be in a better position to make a decision on it once I've had a go with the other fabric.

The only trousers I've made before are pyjamas so it should be a good learning experience regardless of the outcome.

In the wardrobe / Emilie turtleneck to try out new overlocker
« on: January 14, 2022, 11:10:30 AM »
Hello everyone, long time lurker this side of the forum  :ninja: but think this is my first time posting a make. I've made a few t shirts and button up shirts in the past, and some pjs, but I am still facing new (to me) challenges and learning a lot every time I make a garment.

I picked up this free turtleneck pattern from Jalie a while ago and have recently used it to try out the overlocker I was given for Christmas, using some black cheapo jersey I wasn't too concerned by the concept of ruining through incompetence.

I did manage to accidentally carve a hole into one of the armpits with the lil overlocker knife but it was pretty easily fixed, and apart from having to rethread the whole device twice the assembly was very painless. I think it's a good beginner pattern as all of the sides are straight including the sleeves, which are not only straight at the top but also attached to the body while it's flat so there's no setting in (which I find very fiddly). All in all I'm very pleased with how it came out:

It came out a little bit over sized because I couldn't figure out how to print the pattern so that the 'test square' measured exactly the correct size so after about 4 attempts with different settings I ended up settling for close enough. I might just get the pattern printed and posted next time as it seems like less faff. Any advice you might have on that front (or general overlocker tips for a newbie) would be very gratefully received!

Hi everyone

Hope you're well. I'm also hoping you'll bestow some of your wisdom..

I've been asked if I'll have a go at copying this dress. I'm an enthusiastic novice and some parts of it look alright: I have a boxy blouse pattern which I can reuse and change to be an all in one sleeve if needs be - it looks like the bodice is fitted to the waistband with two big darts anyway so I think that part of things will be alright.
The skirt baffles me though and extensive searching has yielded nothing similar. I think it's because I don't really know what I'm looking at so I'm not searching for the right terms. Do you know where I'd find a pattern for something like this please? Or do you know what the style is called (especially the tucks at the front of the skirt)?

If there's no similar pattern, I think my next plan of attack will be to open some big darts into the centre front of a pencil skirt pattern and see how it looks to just fold them up.

Bonus question: do you think cotton poplin would be too heavy?

Thank you for taking the time to noodle on this with me :D

Current Projects / Bee themed table runner and placemats
« on: June 01, 2021, 23:13:44 PM »
Hi everyone

It's my friend's birthday at the start of July so I'm working on a present. She likes bee motifs so she's getting a bee themed quilted table runner which is about the right size for her small dining table and some matching placemats. And maybe some coasters if I have enough of the little squares left.

I really like the fabrics, they're just a FQ pack from eBay.

(images on the forum aren't appearing for me at the moment - not sure if they are for everyone else as well, so here's the direct link just in case)

Still umming and ahhing about the layout for the runner at the moment, does this look balanced to you?

direct link to that one too

Hi everyone.

I'm just getting to the point now where I have several bits and pieces laying around from projects - couple of extra four patches from a blue/pink quilt, a third of a red/yellow jelly roll, some partially used pinkish fat quarters.

So, I'm very interested in how you organise your scraps - do you cut the fabric down and store it by size? By colour? Just in a sack under the desk? Pics appreciated.

Hi, I'm new... / Hello from Birmingham
« on: May 30, 2020, 08:38:39 AM »
Hi everyone, thanks for having me.

I'm new to machine sewing so hoping to learn from your experience while having a natter.

I've been crocheting for about 6 years (everyone I know already has a hand made scarf might be a better measure of time), and dabble in knitting and making dolls house scale furniture/scenery for dungeons and dragons games.. but have recently been bitten by the quilting bug. I've just about managed to figure out how to attach the walking foot to produce a couple of quilted coasters but I have a long way to go.  :|

Looking forward to getting to know you :)
