Title: My shopping week
Post by: Ravingdoll on June 17, 2017, 13:43:13 PM
I won't deny I've been more grumpy than raving doll this week.  In the last 12 days I've had 1.5 rest days, leave has been cancelled, we've all been re-rostered and I have been asked out for dinner by a fellow officer but we can't actually find an evening when we are both off at the same time  :o This job was not meant to ruin my love life  >:)  Everything has an air of sombreness about it right now, what with the terrorist attacks/the fire and locally we've had quite a few fatal road accidents, a couple of murders and several suicides.  I was quite horrified when the coroner revealed that 1 in 8 deaths in Devon are attributable to suicide.  Anyway, moving on as you have to do: the ability to shop on the internet did mean that I was able to buy most of this from Til the Sun Goes Down.  They're not the cheapest - but then again where else am I going to get to spend money at the moment?! What I do like about them is that they do have some vintage fabric, the blue checked one is believed to be 1970s, 2.5 metres and will make a nice skirt I think.  My favourite is the green and purple silk satin which will make a great vintage style dress. Going to be horrible to sew with though I expect  ......... Another thing I like about this company is that they do a lot of quirky fabrics in dressmaking quality, viscose and other drapey ones rather than quilting cottons.   Muv bought me the Simplicity pattern as she thought View B was very 'me' (it is) and I needed cheering up (I do).  She also found a couple of metres of the brown viscose one in her stash and donated it to me for said cheering up, and I am going to make the blouse from it.  Again it is from Til the Sun Goes Down, they have a very small pattern range but I've made up two others and they were fairly straightforward, the only adjustment I had to make was a small FBA and I didn't have to make the shoulders smaller which I often have to do with other brands.   My sewing room is all done now.  Walls painted, new shelves up, new lighting, roller blind, now for the rest of the house.  It's also the cleanest room in the house probably on account of not getting to spend enough time in it to mess it up!  But I will .....  :D

Maybe I should have clarified, due to private messages and another media that has used my posting, that I do understand that most people who work Monday to Friday (5 days) two day weekend then another Monday to Friday (five days) get two rest days over 12 days rather than the one and a half I was moaning about BUT here's the difference. The average rota for police means we work six on and four off.  Our six on involves a mixture of 10, 11 or 12 hour shifts and we do 2 earlies, 2 lates followed by 2 nights.   So rest day one usually means you finish work at 7am then doing whatever you do to get your body clock back to normal.  When you get one day off and the rest of your rest days are cancelled it is kind of tough on the body to finish work at 7am, spend the day getting over it then starting work at 6.30am the following morning.   The half day rest day means that you got to finish at midnight instead of 4am so that you can start work at 3pm.    Not looking for sympathy it comes with the job, times are tough, but when the Prime Minister (no politics intended or invited) says that there will be more police presence on the streets no new police officers suddenly jump out. Those of us doing the job just have to do a little bit more of it.  And yeah, sometimes we get a little grumpy!

Very useful to have this detail, RD. Whatever way you look at it  (and not to deny that others also have extremely busy working lives) it's a pretty punishing schedule. Adjusting to work shifts overnight must be incredibly difficult given our body clocks are set to daytime awake, nighttime sleep. I don't know how you, and any of the other professions who work like this, manage to do it.

Let's hope that promises of more police officers from whatever part of the political spectrum (and doctors, nurses and teachers too would be good) actually materialise.

Do you mean your post has been lifted from here without your permission and used elsewhere, or do you mean you have posted elsewhere yourself?

Someone posted part of my message onto Facebook. I don't use it myself but one of the 'nees and neffs' saw it and told me. As my nickname in the family is 'dolly raver' and in the police it is either Sindy Doll or Daisy Doll working out I am Raving Doll wasn't too taxing! The joys of social media I guess. I am not too bothered what a bunch of trolls think of me but I wouldn't like people on here thinking I couldn't cope with having the equivalent of a bit of a weekend curtailed when that isn't the reality because of shifts. I am not even moaning really, we are all having to do it, we are the emergency services after all and we are living in a difficult time but we are human too and we get tired of people like the prime minister saying that it is not how many officers you have it is how you deploy them that matters.  Well sweets maybe that goes for MPs too! And on that note I am off to work and not the Father's Day lunch the rest of my family are off to apart from the doctor brother and matron sister in law!!

RD, I seem to be bumping into similar discussions on various forums (fora)
and found a poem lurking at the back of my memory

    O it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Tommy, go away";
    But it's "Thank you, Mister Atkins", when the band begins to play,
