Title: Purple wool cape
Post by: Silver Rose on January 20, 2020, 15:27:24 PM
I managed to get the cape cut out earlier, it took ages as I had to keep stopping to stretch my back. I'll see how I am tomorrow and do some more.

It is a week later and I managed to spend about an hour on the cape and now it is looking more like a garment, before I attach the front and neck facings I'll need to buy a lot of bias binding to finish the edge of the facings and also hong king finish the seams as the wool is fraying like billy-o. It is a lovely weight and will be warm to wear. I still have to buy a suitable fastening.

I have small metal things for fastening if you would like a pair (or two)

Thanks @Iminei , I've seen a lot online like that but I would like them to be larger, I haven't looked locally because I haven't been very mobile lately. How much do you want for 2 pairs?

Did a bit more today and bought 10 metres of bias binding to finish the seams.
Thank you very much @Iminei for the 2 pairs of fastenings, I think they will be OK, they look similar to the fastenings on a Norwegian knitted cardigan I had many years ago.

Did a bit more yesterday apart from making an awful job of the bias binding on the front and back facing grr, so I'll sort that out today and carry on finishing the main seams of the cape with bias binding. The collar is ready to go on next then the facing. I'll have to take my time as I still can't sit for too long.

Well, I sorted out the edge finish of the back and front facing and then started to pin the bias binding to the main seams, the fabric is very thick and although I bought 2.5 cm wide bias binding it was not going well so I decided the best way to go would be to line the cape and hide away all those chunky seams. I'll probably zigzag stitch the edges to minimise fraying so next job is to buy some lining and then cut out the pieces I need with suitable adjustments regarding the facings, I lined a blazer jacket last year, the original pattern was for unlined so I am comfortable with doing it. not something I would dared to do 3 or 4 years ago. So a lot of interesting sewing ahead and I would like to cut out the nightshirt and pyjama bottoms from my latest purchase from Croft Mill. Can you detect a more positive me here :) I had better get the h*******k done first then I can crack on.

Good to see you're feeling a bit more chipper @Silver Rose.

I can't believe you did the binding and then decided to line it. That's like dropping the plate after you've washed and dried it!  :S

Thanks @wrenkins but I started to pin the binding in place on a seam and then realised it wasn't going to work and downed the pins. It would be a lot of work binding all those seams so I changed my mind. I'm not going to be  a martyr to my sewing.

I've returned to the cape after a few days of inactivity and got the collar and facing tacked on and not wonky. I've run out of energy now and need a rest and food. My eyes keep wandering to the llama print brushed cotton for pyjamas.

@Iminei  my friend wishes that duvet sets for grown ups had dinosaurs on them and he is 67, I'm always looking for that sort of fabric so I could make him one.

Collar and facings all done and pressed, the hem is pinned too. Now I need to buy the lining and finish it off and finally sew on the fastenings. I am pleased with it, it is really warm and cosy to wear.

I bought some matching purple lining fabric yesterday and some more thread from Franklins so hope to cut out the lining today, I've got the pattern pieces all ready, just hope my inflexible back holds up. Always feel better after a swim though which I had earlier.

I cut out the lining last weekend and have only made the adjustments for the facings today so I hope to sew the lining together and get it pinned into the cape tomorrow before my 1.30 appointment at the glaucoma clinic.

Looking forward to seeing this @Silver Rose. I started a cape a while back but gave up at the first hurdle. I must fish it out again and have another look.  :[

This is taking so long, what could be simpler than making a cape? When I was my normal fit self this would have been finished in next to no time but I will soldier on as I love the fabric and can't wait to wear it. There is a theatre matinee date coming up in a couple of weeks perhaps it will be ready by then  ;) Yes@wrenkins , fish it out and get it finished, I'd love to see it.

It says for kids, but it comes in double and king size.

Also, I am excited to see your finished cape  :D

The lining is sewn up ready to go in the cape, at last. I can only sit for a few minutes at the sewing table before the sciatica starts to take over that's why it has taken so long. Nearly on the last lap.

Hooray, the lining is sewn in, I've got to finish off the slits  in the front and sew the hem as yet and attach the 2 fastenings so a bit more to do.
I managed to cut out a nightshirt out of pink and grey cotton jersey.

I am hemming at the moment but as I can't sit or stand for long it is taking  ages.
Physio appointment on Friday so I hope for improvement.

All hemmed and presssed just the two fastenings to sew on and I will wear it today when we go for a walk later. Pics too if I remember to ask my friend to take some. It is a really heavy and a warm cape to wear I  <3 it.

Well, I wore the cape yesterday for a short walk along the river at Manningtree and got my friend to take some pics. He took them when we got back to my house so I apologise for the crumpled look, the cape got bunched up in the car and the neck fasteniings are not sewn on in a wonky way like it looks ;)

Great result from all your work! I like the fabric and the colour. Somehow I'd imagined a deep purple, but the actual colour is much nicer and more wearable. Is it as cosy as it looks?

Your cape is gorgeous.

I love capes in wool but I live in a warm/hot climate so my opportunity for wearing them is quite limited.

I love it @Silver Rose. I have a boucle wool mix in a similar shade but it frays like b'jaysus! I must get it out and have another look.  :loveit:

@mudcat I wore this (https://www.the-saleroom.com/en-gb/auction-catalogues/nigel-ward-and-company/catalogue-id-srnig10010/lot-0c02346e-7e15-4272-bf05-a3f70142d024) to my sister-in-law's wedding in the snow in Maryland many years ago. I could have sold it ten times over!!!  0_0 The colours are much richer than in the photo. It's a deep moss green.  :loveit:

Thank you everyone, it is very warm but quite heavy to wear. It is a really easy make but it has taken me ages and I lined it too. Because of my sore right hip I have been using my left foot on the s/m pedal which is a bit awkward.
@wrenkins  the fabric frayed badly that's why I lined it to hide the mess inside.

I wonder is it the same???  :o That would be funny!  [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

I considered doing mine reversible but my head blew up and it became a UFO/WIP  :S

I can't for the life of me remember what pattern I was using!  ><
