A Good Yarn / Knitting for baby
« on: December 28, 2021, 22:42:06 PM »
I have put the winter hat knitting to one side and have dug out my Mum's baby patterns to start knitting for my first grandchild, due in June!

My Mum loved to knit for new arrivals in the family and her "Patons Baby Scene" (circa 1973) book is well used but just about holding together. So I thought I'd start with one of Mum's go-to patterns for a baby jacket. Maybe a little old fashioned but it will be cosy for the little one and a link to their late great Grandma.  <3

A bit of a 'do' / Mother of the groom - informal wedding ideas
« on: July 11, 2021, 08:33:08 AM »
My son and his girlfriend have just announced their engagement.  :D The wedding date is yet to be set but it wil be an informal do, close family, registry office followed by a BBQ. Probably in a couple of months time.

I have no idea what to wear. I like dresses, I don't mind sleeveless, but jackets look awful on me. I' d need flattish shoes as I can't wear heels any more. I'm a bit stumped for ideas. Where do I start?

A Good Yarn / Teach yourself torchon lace book
« on: March 19, 2021, 22:48:37 PM »
Having dusted off my long neglected lace pillow and bobbins, I've decided to work through Eunice Arnold's book Teach Yourself Torchon Lace. There are 6 workcards to work through and I've just completed the first one.

It's fairly basic but I'm quite enjoying it so far.

Bear with me as a newbie to the the Darkside! Before Christmas I decided to make a load of rail fence blocks to use up fabrics I had left over from my swimming pool quilt. I've also made some Churn Dash blocks following Jenny from Missouri Star's method on YouTube. I really like how these have come out and am very pleased with them.

What I'd like to do is make a quilt from this mishmash of blocks but the rail fence blocks are much smaller than the churn dash ones, and the churn dash blocks are different sizes to each other. Can this be done or is this a crazy idea?

Do you have any recommendations for books, blogs, or vlogs for new quilters? I'm looking for some inspiration to get from the beginner stage to the next steps to learn and improve.  Thank you!  :D

Sewing Machines / Pfaff Ambition 620 - any thoughts as a P&Q machine?
« on: November 22, 2020, 09:22:55 AM »
A friend has a Pfaff Ambition 620 for sale and I'm tempted. I don't really "need" a new machine but having recently taken up patchwork and quilting I wonder whether I would find the Pfaff a step up from my Brother Innovis 350SE and what the benefits would be? My Brother has an extension table, quarter inch and free motion foot and walking foot so has the basic quilting accessories. Does anyone have experience of this machine for P&Q?

Hi Darksiders.

Since venturing over to the darkside of TSP with an innocent question about batting for a sewing machine mat, I have found myself watching quilting videos on YouTube and beginning to dabble with some simple piecing. I've made a cushion cover, made 3 simple blocks with scraps and am now thinking I need a proper patchwork ruler or two. Is this a slippery slope?  ;) :D

I have not done any quilting before but fancied making a sewing machine mat. There are plenty of videos about... but what is this mysterious "batting" they talk about?  :[ Where could I buy some suitable for a small sewing machine mat without buying enough to make a whole quilt? What weight/thickness would be about right?  -< I am bewildered. I thought this was going to be an easy project but I've fallen at the first hurdle!

Vintage Machines / Elna Lotus SP
« on: July 13, 2020, 22:14:54 PM »
I happened to spot a dinky Elna Lotus SP for sale locally  over the weekend and, oops, I appear to have bought another vintage machine! It came with all the original accessories and loads of bobbins (with a bewildering number of short lengths of coloured thread. I understand it belonged to a quilter). It had a good deal of fluff around the bobbin race but with a good clean and a new needle, it sews lovely. I am so pleased with it. Any tips from fellow Elna Lotus owners?

Fun with Fabric / Liberty fabrics on Birmingham Rag Market
« on: January 13, 2018, 15:40:36 PM »
I had a trip to Birmingham Rag Market today - the first time in ages - and spotted a "new to me" stall in the indoor market with a wide range of liberty fabrics. They seemed to start at £8 for Tana lawn, going up in price for the newer and in season prints. I bought some nice Liberty print stretch denim at £12 a metre to make some shorts for my hols.  :fabric:  0_0

Sewing Spaces and Furniture / Ironing Board recommendations
« on: January 06, 2018, 15:47:47 PM »
The time has come to replace my ironing board. What should I be looking for in an ironing board which will be used for everyday ironing of clothes (not literally 'everyday' in my house!) and pressing/dressmaking? Any recommendation? Thank you :)

Sewing Machines / Online Sewing Machine retailers - which one to avoid?
« on: December 03, 2017, 15:02:22 PM »
I seem to recall there was one particular sewing machine online retailer which got very poor reviews on TSF. Which one was it? It's annoying me that I can't remember! :sew:
