Title: Exotic Burst Cowl by Dolly Bhardwaj
Post by: Pearl on October 16, 2020, 08:40:59 AM
My mum asked me to get this pattern for her from Ravelry and when I saw it, I thought I’d have a go.  It is a good way to use up oddments of wool.  I think I’ve got enough for 50 cowls.

Plenty of ends to sew in.   :scream:

That's very different from what I've seen before.   :loveit:
I've not felt the urge to crochet anything for years though and I had enough of darning in my Fair Isle ends yesterday.

Ooo, that looks pretty!  Can we see a pic of your pattern please?  I'm also looking for projects which will use up my large stash of yarn.  Lots of it, but not great quantities of the same type or colour.

I've a feeling that it's actually knitted...

That's a most unusual pattern, I thought it was knitted.
@b15erk look up mitred square knitting (https://www.theknittingsquirrel.com/how-to-knit-a-mitred-square-blanket/)
The squares aren't sewn together, the stitches are picked up along the side of a square to knit the next one.  It's on my list of things to do one day.

Yes, it’s knitted.  I’m like you, @annieeg .  I tried many times over the years but now have resigned myself to the fact that I’m never going to be able to crochet.

You've made my day!! 0_0 0_0
I can knit and checked out the pattern (which I think I might manage, provided I concentrate ) so I bought it!!
Its really lovely, and will be interesting to try and learn the techniques.
I, also, have a lot of wool bits and pieces and this could put them to use.
Thanks :flower: @Pearl

That's lovely @Pearl !  I've bookmarked it, and hopefully it will be one to reduce my stash.  New knitting technique (to me) too - is it a Brioche stitch?

No, not brioche stitch.  Much easier.   :)

Very unusual.  I do like something different.

I am very tempted to try this, too (although I MUST finish my jumper first...)  I tend to get bored with large areas of knitting, so this ought to be ideal.

I found myself sitting chatting (mother!) t'other day and wishing I had some knitting on. I haven't knit for ages and I'd love to start something... :loveit: It makes me feel as if I'm very busy even when I'm being a lazy lump!

That is such a beautiful cowl. Unfortunately it is beyond my capabilities and concentration level.

Probably not beyond your capabilities, @Puzzler , it’s only knit, purl and slip stitches.  I can‘t comment on concentration; that’s not my strong suit.

I always tell people that all knitting is only 2 stitches (technically one because purl is just plain from the other side) and you just do different things with the stitches to make patterns.

My problem is that I do things with the stitches that I am not meant to do.  :S I have yet to finish a very simple scarf for DD1 that I started 2 years ago.  :|

I tried this yesterday but ended up with too many stitches by row 4.  Is the trick to not knit the yarn which is laid in the front or back of the needle but let it lie across the knitting?
Is there a tutorial on YT dies anyone know?

Have you finished this @Pearl ? Is there a pattern?
What yarn and needles would I need please?

@annieeg , I'll have a look at the pattern now to see if I can work out what might be happening with you.

Edit - yes, you're right.  You don't knit the yarn that is laid across the front or back.  You just move the yarn so that it doesn't show on the front of the cowl.

Sit down before you read this, @Lowena .  I have finished.   :faints:

The pattern is here (http://https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/exotic-burst-cowl)

The pattern is for 4 ply wool and 3.5mm needles, but I used DK because that's what I had most of.  I just used oddments.  (I'm sure you have a huge wool stash, Lowena. )

It does create a lovely deign - thank you - I wonder if you could make into a shawl? (I find shawls useful for hot flushes, easy to slip on or off)
:)

Ooh thank you so much @Pearl
I never doubted your finishing power for an instant. :D
I'll have to dig out my needles, I have 3pairs but don't know what sizes.
I think I have a ball of wool somewhere  :D
Oh, just tried the link but it won't work :(

Now that looks really good, might be my next make after my mitts.  I’ve got so many odd balls of really good quality yarns

It would be a wonderful way of using them up.

Now I know I promised myself not to buy anymore patterns till the New Year but

@Ellabella , I had the smallest amount of light blue wool and thought it might make one shell.  I made three and still have some left.
