Title: Baby changing bags
Post by: Ellabella on March 14, 2018, 18:18:59 PM
Has anybody made a changing bag and can recommend a particular pattern?

I need to make one for DD, after two boys the old one is getting tatty.

I've looked for patterns but there is so much choice I'd love to get a recommendation of one that really works.

What will it change the baby for/into? Or is it for swapping for a different one?

We need a 'ducks behind the sofa' picture, btw!

I made my own baby changing bag 7 years ago, it was just a normal messenger bag pattern with lots of extra pockets, I also made the strap length adaptable with poppers so you can pop it round the push chair handles (short) or make it long if you want to carry it yourself. I remember seeing a Burda pattern in one of the mags a couple of years ago which looked good though if you want a pattern.

That's no way to speak about your elder grandson @Ellabella  :D

I was a pattern tester for the Mommy Poppins bag (http://sewfearless.com/shop/mommy-poppins-bag-pattern-2/) several years ago and really like the bag, though I've not used it for its intended purpose. I made mine slightly bigger due to the size of the frames I could get at the time and my Sizzix die cutter now lives in the bag.

There are photos and more details of my version of the bag in my blog post (http://sewlittletosay.blogspot.co.uk/2013/04/easter-sewing-part-2-pattern-testing.html) from the time.

We used a boxy shooting/fishing bag, it was very square with lots of pockets with waterproof outside and a waterproof lined area on the inside- good for containing nappies and other child related grot.

It was a very unkiddy khaki :)

There is a large bag in The Bag Making Bible which she suggests would be good for nappies etc.
But I`m wondering if you are looking for one which opens out to become a changing mat?  In which case we aren`t being very helpful at all!

And in this book by Lisa Lam https://www.amazon.co.uk/Bag-All-Reasons-all-new-occasion/dp/1446301850/ref=pd_sim_14_3?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=5CH96P7CNJPAYZQ4GFM3 she actually has a baby changing bag.  I,ve made two of them.  Nice and large and lots of pockets.  But there are a couple of errors in the instructions if anyone makes it!

@Deafoldbat I could make a fortune if I could develop a Baby Metamorphosis bag.

Insert your smelly wingy baby, shake gently and open to reveal a smiley angelic child who never cries or pukes.

@Lowena tatty is a kind description of my big GS.  How anyone can get so scruffy in the course of a day, when I know his mum sent him to school looking lovely, is beyond me. He attracts dirt like a magnet.

@sewingj  I be never fancied those bags that turn into a changing mat. I wouldn't want some of the nappies I've changed anywhere near the contents of any bag.

I may have to treat myself to the Lisa Lam book, the sacrifices we make for our children!

@Ohsewsimple thanks for the heads up on the errors, I may need to consult you later.

ETA, is it too wrong to hope for a little girl who might want pretty GM made dresses?

If, like me, you look at it all and think 'can't be arsed' have a look at Aliexpress (https://www.aliexpress.com/wholesale?catId=0&initiative_id=SB_20180315140102&SearchText=baby+changing+bag) They have them ranging from just a few quid upwards.

I've bought a few things from there lately, and find most things arrive in about 2-3 weeks.
