Vintage Machines / Re: Amazing restoration of an old Singer

Wow amazing! We've enjoyed watching that.

I do have everything for the Jones (I have 2 of those) @Elnnina , I just would rather leave it un set up for now since have this one available for her.

@Sheilago that looks lovely, really lovely fabric! I might do something like that with my wee one once she's a bit more sure of things.  She's 4 now so not the most interested in following instructions she isn't interested in.

We made a simple gathered skirt today, less actual sewing by her but when she did do a bit she even did the stopping and removing pins and things (the cushion was made without bothering with pins), She also helped draw out cut lines and stitch lines (ish) with the tailors chalk.  Just wish she didn't think following the drawn lines boring! I can't stop helicoptering over her and straightening the fabric feeding through when get chance despite getting told to go sit on sofa and leave her alone.

Haha @Ohsewsimple yeh if that was only machine to use, very hard work, even the treadles are quite some exercise.  I do like them for quickly mending things, often easy and quick to set up, I just use random thread ends and bobbins that haven't yet run out.

I do have a treadle too (its what 'her' (my granma's) machine sits on top of) so once she's tall enough she can have a go on that but I suspect she'll be onto electric with foot pedals by then.

This sounds interesting, I'm rather busy at moment but hoping I remember to watch it.

Glad its bringing back memories for people who also learnt on hand cranks! Hand cranks really are hard work but definitely still useful.

She likes to practice playing at sewing on an old Jones machine which had been my Grandma's who I think bought it second or even thirdhand.  Thankfully Little One didn't make too much fuss when I explained she couldn't use that for the cushion project - takes funny needles and it has a long bobbin in a bullet shuttle.  Its a shame as I'd have loved for her to use that one (not that I ever remember my Grandma having a sewing machine).

@Lachica that sounds great, we're planning to make an easy elasticated skirt for her as our next project.  I did wonder about using my Janome with adjustable speed and start/stop button but definitely for now I think will stick with the handcrank (my arm got rather sore after doing the whole thing via it though). Would be interested to find out how you get on with your grandchild and which works - foot pedal or the button.

A few weeks ago we won some fat quarters in an Easter raffle from our local sewing shop and so Little one then picked a few more to go with them and has started learning to sew.  This has been the first time She's had a go with a set up machine, in the past she's played with no needle or thread and I was very very nervous about this haha.

She chose the layout for the fabrics herself and with Mummy's help we made a patchwork cushion cover, She paid lots of attention and listened, sewed a few seams by herself and watched closely as sewed the zip in as well as helping a lot.  She was super pleased to discover how to change sewing direction and as soon as the cover was finished she found some scraps to practice on.

All the sewn things in the home - more items made by people on here than by myself have rubbed off on her I think (mugrug swaps are used as rugs in dollhouses as well as the lovely quilt and cushion covers)  :loveit:

Anyway I'm very pleased our first little project worked so well together and hopefully it will continue with her able to do more herself each time, and I'll be more active on here again.

I'm too busy but think this is a great idea and look forward to seeing what people do! :drink:

I had technical issues trying to post pics, are people able to see the daffodil mug rug?

I dove into your post and sorted it ... I hope you dont mind @Cheesecake

Thank you so much @Sandra for my lovely daffodil mug rug, its stunning absolutely love it.  FPP isn't something I've ever tried as found the instructions confusing.
Also thank you to the Phantom @Iminei for the other beautiful mug rug which I think will make a lovely rug in one of Liesls Doll houses (there's other mug rug swaps used as these too - keeps them safer from spillage and messes).
@Kitten so glad they arrived safely.

Got mine posted today and should take 1-2 days so it should be fine.

So local post office person is off with covid so I can't post it until tomorrow when I can get to a bigger post office - which I need to go to anyway to collect something.  Hoping first class it will still be quick enough.

13
Well having thought no post today I discovered 2 squishy flattish SES 2022 packages shoved through the door, lovely surprise.  Looking forward to Sunday!

Oooh fun, the one from me is wrapped up and ready to post tomorrow morning.  Cars in for MOT and post office I can walk to is only open Tuesday mornings (and Thursday, but that would be too late).

I never like the feeling I get when I post these swaps off and then worry about where they are or might get to, its always a relief when they then arrive.

I've managed to get the tops done for mine and have set up a sewing machine downstairs so hopefully will manage to get a couple of evenings of Liesl going to bed at a decent time (unsure about this) to get the rest done.  So very glad I decided to make some time to join in with this swap! :flower:
