Title: top for pj top in stretch fabric
Post by: hernibs on February 07, 2018, 12:12:06 PM
I had cotton jersey to make pj bottoms - did those last night....now am wondering if I can get a sort of a top with short sleeves out of what's left.  I can get the front and back on the grain line on the fold....my question is....would you cut out sleeves NOT on the grainline to get some sort of a sleeve.  This is a pj top...not fine fashion.....but would it be comfy?  Thanks.

It depends how far off-grain the sleeves would have to be.  A couple of degrees would be OK but a lot more off and they would twist and probably be uncomfortable.  Can you find a similar weight remnant in a co-ordinating colour?

How about grown on sleeves which don’t have a separate pattern piece? I used New Look 6217 for the top of these.

Brendap - completely at right angles to grainline I'm afraid, that's why I question it at all.....

.....and Stitchalot....I only have enough fabric for doing this kind of sleeve on the back!!!!   Your pj's are great.
I can't quite remember where I got this fabric on line - maybe Tia Knight so must have a look and see if I can get more, it wasn't expensive but is good quality.  Thanks for your replies

In that case it depends on how stretchy the fabric is in each direction.  You need the stretch to go around the body, not along the length.

Well, went to Tia Knight and there was my fabric still in stock....for the sake of £7 I will have long sleeves...fabric £3.99 postage £2.99 !  When I bought the first lot I was going to make a nightdress but have since gone back to pj's with long sleeves for the winter and need more pairs.
Thanks for your input.
