Patterns Discussion / Raincoat Pattern
« on: January 18, 2019, 12:13:02 PM »
I've had an unveiling today, first time I wore my Millerain Tostii, and in the light of a frosty morning, my bright red went down a storm.

The idea was to use the extra fabric I bought while it was cheap, for a raincoat.  I've seen this:

https://thesewingrecipe.com/en/product/trufflecoat_en/

Not keen on the hood but it does have a zip front.  Has anyone done this, seen reviews, or seen an alternative.

It's a case of eyes looking at the horizon even though I am a long way of making.

In the wardrobe / Blown the budget, again
« on: January 14, 2019, 16:13:41 PM »
Over Christmas I have made a few purchases for next year.  Shouldn't have but feeling down it raised the spirits.  So I've got jacket fabric, dress fabric, lining fabric.  The jacket fabric I got it then changed my mind when I had a feel, not quite as stiff as I hoped (faux suede), bit on the floppy/flowing side.

I'd also been patterning hunting for a coat as the three I have seem more on the 'going somewhere  special' type and the fourth and fifth are more for up to your wattsies in snow type (I would add that one is at least 20 years old  and the other from 2005).  So I've gone for more casual and with a zip in the front (the amended Waffle Bamboo with the zip).  The latter I'd picked out some fabric but hoping I could buy in February when the slate is clear on plastic again.  I just happened to look today and they were down to around 5.5 meters so of course, loved the colour, just what I wanted and bought before I missed the boat.

Never mind, I've got a sewing calendar set up so at least I know what I'm doing  ;)

Machine Accessories / A bargain for the sewing machine
« on: December 03, 2018, 11:27:08 AM »
I was browsing yesterday for sewing machines (don't want one of course but you got to look)  when I saw this and at first thought that's a cheap machine at £17 initial bid.  Looked for the machine on the internet before I realised it was  what it was sitting on that was for sale (one only sees what one wants to see).

Anyway put my bid and won.  Comes with the mat that looks gorgeous plus a similar pin needle tidy and neat little 'box' for bits and pieces made out of the same fabric. It looks as if a lot of work has gone into it  and I feel a bit guilty because it is worth more than £17. Even got pockets at the front for scissors.  I'm currently using a large piece of  fleece under the Select machine but when you get  the Sew Steady perspex table on, everything shifts about.  This should solve the problem.

I've had an email from them this morning and they have actually reduced their postage charge to £2.99, which is a lot better than the £4.95 (I seem  to remember) they charged before.

They do have some quality stuff in but unless I absolutely had to have it, I moved on elsewhere because of the postage..

Overlockers & Coverstitchers / Tunnelling Janome 2000
« on: November 10, 2018, 14:37:54 PM »
I have never ever had problems with this machine so I got a rude awakening when I came unstuck with some very lightweight jersey for a top.  No matter what I couldn't get the stitching right, using the same layers I would be stitching, until I finally got the book out and realised I was going the wrong way with the pressure button.

That sorted the stitching was perfect apart from tunnelling, which I've never had before.  I read a suggestion that loosening the looper would help, which it did on the sample fabric but on the actual fabric it didn't and I still got tunnelling, although better.  Another suggestion was to make sure that you are are not hitting just one layer, which I could be, second row just outside the double width.  I've looked at another lightweight top and the stitching has landed right on the double layer edge so fine.

I'm hope this will work but if not what else can I do.  I'm running out of spare fabric.

In the wardrobe / Cock up after cock up
« on: November 02, 2018, 13:08:07 PM »
After spending a few months not moving until I had studied the pattern, I have embarked on Butterick 5566

 https://butterick.mccall.com/patterns/misses/skirts

Straight forward, done two before, easy peasy.  Got to the try on bit with clips in the side (so useful), okay bottom, too tight at top (and the other two I had to do big seams, got spandex in or similar), so went with wafer thin seams, nearly there but a heave to get the zip up.  I made my mind to  carry on and finish, last skirt I had that was too tight, next time I wore it just dropped off my waist, may be wishful thinking a second time but you can wish.  Facings next, machined and pinned, too big, much too big, redone and carried on.  Laid out to do the hem, to short, remembered I had added onto the bottom on the others,  forgot this time, too much above the knee (at my age).  Adjusted but still a tad too short. :'(

Since I was doing pattern B/C, I considered doing a fancy hem and adding fabric on, but too messy. So I've gone with a false hem and since I haven't got suitable bias binding I'm moving on. :)

Vintage Machines / Selling very old computerised machines
« on: October 29, 2018, 10:24:19 AM »
Saw this on Ebay today (I can't help but just look occasionally).  The very same machine I sold for £25 in 2009, still working fine apart from the bobbin winder and bought around the end of the 80's.

It certainly was a lovely machine but is it being honest to sell for £449.99 when the circuit board could go any time and could not be replaced.

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/JANOME-MEMORY-CRAFT-7000-EMBROIDERY-SEWING-MACHINE-16kg-WELL-SOUGHT-AFTER-9149/323224495545?hash=item4b41ae65b9:g:J2QAAOSwY5Ra37kl:rk:90:pf:0

No idea where they get 16kg either, it wasn't light but it certainly wasn't heavy.

Just looked and they have another one in a £399.

The Haberdashery / My new iron
« on: October 22, 2018, 13:15:09 PM »
I have to say I am not impressed with my new Steam Generator, although everything is 'more' than the old one.

The iron itself is lighter but for for some reason feels heavier.  My old one makes around a 10 second grunting noise (pulling water into the bottom bit) and thereafter you get around 45 minutes of steam.  This one sort of makes a quiet grunt all the time but steam does not seem as prolific, unless you want to do vertical steaming then it is in abundance.

There again I don't seem to need as much steam or heat due to my new Brabantia ironing board.  Don't know what they've got underneath the top sheet but it  works.  No steamed windows at all, until the vertical steaming try out.

Plus points, the whole unit is far lighter than the other one and the cord does not have to be left to cool down after use. Also the iron has a lock on it to hold it in place while stored away, which is good as I've had a few dropping incidents in the past.  I suppose I will get used to it eventually.

The old steam generator is now in the sewing room.  The sole plate was a bit messy so I tried my new Pyrm stick stuff on it.  No instructions in English so just put in on the hot plate like some other stuff I had.  Worked a treat until I started getting close to see how shiny clean it made it and nearly gassed myself with the smell. :S

Publications / Sew Today

Just opened my magazine and seen they have been taken over by CSS Industries who own the Simplicity Creative Brand.  Job losses in Stockport though, which is a shame, they were always very helpful.

At least we will get the chance to add money off Simplicity and New Look patterns.  In my later sewing life I have not been a fan of Simplicity but had  some good results with New Look.

In the wardrobe / At last a Waffle Tostie
« on: October 12, 2018, 15:44:37 PM »
Can't remember when I started it, but it seems like ages  ago, it was actually 13 August.   Do I like it, love it.  The gorgeous faux fur I bought, I  chickened out of cutting it so changed to some faux shearling, which was not as expensive and I could buy less.

If I could change anything it would be the top pocket near the zip placket.  There was hardly any room so I would reposition further away.  In the end I used handbag zips on the pockets, seemed stronger and they get a lot of use. It hasn't been pressed at all but I suspect if I do that it will never get photographed, which is what usually happens.  I used Millerain fabric, which didn't like pins so the quilting clips I used were a real godsend.  I used Thinsulate inside  and it has made it feel really warm. The lining quilting was a bind for me, I'm not really a quilter and when the tape ran out I'm afraid I ran a ruler down and sewed up to it with a zip foot.  Worst thing about, I have never known fabric pick up so much thread, I seemed to be continually pulling it off and of course most times that went on the floor.

I'm already thinking about doing it again in maybe a wool fabric, although after three projects one after the other I think the next step is a blitz in the sewing room.

For Sale, Wanted & Free to a good home / Vogue 9164 & Vogue 8904
« on: October 11, 2018, 10:03:08 AM »
Yesterday I received a parcel  from Sew Essential, I wanted something to put the numerous clips I had used on my jacket.
As usual it was a small item in an enormous box.  Stuffed with paper, which  turned out to be the above patterns.  I'm not even sure I have complete patterns but there is a lot of them.  From looking at the current patterns with these numbers I would hazard a guess that they are more vintage. First one looks like it could be something with loose trousers/pants and the second one is a skirt.  It must be a funny one because there are about 12 bits on the pattern, all the same (none of your cut 12), about  four inches by two inches.  Seems a lot of belt carriers.

Anyway, any one want to put a puzzle together (no instructions), let me know and I'll post.
