Same for me!!!! 0_0

Just caught up with this after getting a notification from my previous thread. That will look fabulous with some judicious sparkles. :D
I doubt any will fall off as long as you leave them to set firmly for 24 hours before folding it but if you do take the glue with you and a few spare stones, any odd ones that have escaped can soon be replaced. Just wait a while for the glue to go off before adding the crystal - if it's already hung vertically before you spot it I'd suggest leaving the blob of glue a little longer than normal perhaps a minute or so.
-
Gorgeous quilt Iminei! There are as many ways of applying rhinestones with glue as there are people doing it. Whatever method you end up using, try to avoid having a stone cross a seam junction if you possibly can; the stones will adhere better if they have a consistent surface to take the glue. If you're using Gem Tac, I'd make sure the quilt is flat on the table, not hanging, and can stay flat and undisturbed until the glue has cured. This can take 24 hours or more, depending on the weather.
What size rhinestones are you planning to use? How I apply the glue depends often on the size of the stone I'm using. For larger ones (over 20ss), I tend to use the Gem Tac bottle with a very small hole in the lid, to place a small dob of glue (about the size of the stone you're using) directly onto the quilt where you want the stone. After the glue has had a chance to go "off" a little, I use forceps to pick the stone up and simply place it on the glue.
If the stones are smaller, I pour a small amount of Gem Tac onto a square of silicon baking paper or a small disposable plastic plate, then I use a toothpick with a dob of orthodontist wax (or worn out Blu Tac) on the end to pick up the stone, shiny side up. I dab the flat side into the glue, making sure the entire flat side is coated in glue, then I put the stone glue side down where it needs to be. If needed, I use forceps to gently disengage the stone from the toothpick.

Good point and one I hadn't considered, thank you!
If you're using Gem Tac, I'd make sure the quilt is flat on the table,
That will be how I apply them, keeping it flat might be a different matter but I will for as long as i possibly can.
The stones I'm using are small going down to teeniest tiniest! I've just gone and got them from upstairs, lets see what we have here!
I have the white wax pencils, but I've tried these before and I must be missing something ... I'd quite like to see how the bluetack method works.
I have two Anitas gemstone wheels , one has miniscule gems the other a size above that and I have various packs of more conventional sized stones.

I choose teeny as I want a subtle bling ... if you can imagine such a thing.
I will definitely practice first, as when I have attached stones before I found it v fiddly

Not sure what is an Anita's Gemstone Wheel but I suspect it's a pot containing a selection of different size stones? If your stones are not sized, then you size them by measuring their diameter. ss12 is 3 mm across, ss16 is 4mm, and ss20 is 5mm (all approx). Any smaller than ss12 and I'd be tearing my hair out!
To use blu-tac - work a small blob of blu-tac in your fingers until it loses some of its stick. This might take a while. To help the process along, you can work in a wee bit of talcum powder. Then simply stick the blob on the end of a toothpick, form the end into a bit of a point, and wait until the warmth has gone out of it.
The reason I first "de-sticky" the blu-tac is that if it's too sticky it won't release the stone and I make a terrible mess trying to pull a glue-y stone off the toothpick onto the correct place on the garment. The blu- tac works best when it's not too warmed by your hands, as the warmer it is, the stickier and stretchier it is, and the less likely it is to release the stone when you need it to.
-
Just a quick mention that whether using blu-tack or a proprietary product it helps if you twist the stick to release the stone after it's been placed down on the glue spot. You may find you do that instinctively anyway.

Heres the stash....

No photos visible again Imi :'( ( getting to be a habit :P )
-
I can't see anything either?
-
Any Better ????
I seem to be getting more technically illiterate as I get older ! :(
-
Got it the photos now show up :D. What size are the rhinestones? Any chance you can re-photo with something for scale (eg a ruler lying on top of the container)?
-
There are pencil sized pencils there...The teensiest are very teensy!
-
Ah yes, and I recognise the wheel containers so I think the sizes are ss12 or smaller. I'd find them very fiddly with tweezers - they'd ping out all over the place like tiddly winks! 0_0 I found the pencils to be the least effective of all the tools I tried but I was using ss20 stones and the teeny tinies may pick up more easily as they're very lightweight so worth a try.
If you use blue tack or Embellie Geilie you'll need to form it into a fine point to stop them getting constantly embedded in the stuff. Use a delicate touch too, much less than with the pencil.
-
Gosh what a lot of pretty pretties!! And the quilt is amazing. The is going to be so nice.
You may find it easier to put small handfuls of the stones on saucers or little paper plates rather than fishing them out of the boxes one by one. Use a separate plate per colour/size if you can. If you gently shake the plate, the stones will magically flip pointy side up.
In terms of leaving it flat, it will be more than dry enough to move after an hour or two, but avoid folding it until the glue is well and truly dry. It is often necessary to do stoning over several days so you can wait for it to dry before moving the work to the next area.
Speaking of drying glue, Gemtac dries clear, but also waterproof, so it is very difficult to remove once dry. Don't worry about little bits of glue around the edges of the stones, but use a toothpick or similar to scrape up any glue that went horribly wrong and if necessary wipe with water while the glue is still wet.
-
Thanks for all your tried tips and advice.
I will get round to this mid month and will no doubt be back with queries and gripes then! :D
-
I just love the quilt - its simply stunning!
Have you thought of using hot fix crystals - I have used these for all sorts of stuff, on jeans, on riding breeches, saddle cloths, gloves, skirts.... and they go through the wash, time after time and so far, I have not lost a single one. The swarovski ones are by far they best, and to be honest, using the little iron to attach them with isnt difficult! The only thing I think to look out for is the cost of the little irons/applicators - they vary in price and are all basically the same! You can also buy stencils for crystals too if you need a more uniform look. I also use a pair of bent ended tweezers that came with my overlocker to pick the little devils up with! Also there is no mess at all - it just takes a few seconds for the glue to melt on the back of each crystal, then just dab it where you want it!
-
Thank you for that but I really need to stop spending on stuff so I'll go with the gemtac and what I have Im afraid!
-
Right!
Its been confirmed that its in the FoQ, so next week I will be blinging up the Under the Sea quilt....
Hanging sleeve first, then a serious Blingathon ...
Wish me luck!
-
Good Luck Imi! All will be good I'm sure of it :) :vintage:
-
Good luck!!!! (https://emojidictionary.emojifoundation.com/img/emoji220.jpg)
And it will be great!! As usual, when you are doing something!! :flower:
-
Good luck with the blinding. It's going to be even more gorgeous!
-
The hanging sleeve is now attached so there is no reason not to bling away but I'm still procrastinating ...
I think I will try on a small prototype first.

What sort of Buggery is this ?? To paraphrase Amy Winehouse
Hooooow boring ????
Hoooow Fiddly ????
Hoooow soul destroying ???
Is adding bling to the Undersea ?
GAH !!! as Demented Fairy would say....
But I've started so must finish ....Groan :(
-
'Tis gorgeous and can only get gorgeouser.
You're on the home straight! Go Iminei! 0_0
-
I just hope you lot are right and the glue dries clear and you can't see the smears and its not overdone and I'm beginning to think I'm a fool entering the quilts anyway..... (dissolves into a quivering wreck)
-
Any ideas where to attach my bling???
Over the critters to make them look sparkly, and maybe a few in the foamy waves at the top.
For picking up teensie weensie bits I've got a couple of pairs of very pointy tweezers which I got from Joanna Sheen. Alas she soesn't seem to stock them any more but she does have this (http://this). These tweezers (http://tweezers)look to be apretty good buy though.
-
It's great and going to be even more awesome! Now stop procrastinating and browsing the forums and just finish it so we can see pictures of how lovely it is, yes? :D
-
Try using a bit of Blue tac on the end of a cocktail stick for the teeny tiny bits. I have big hands, and really struggled, but this little tool helped a lot.
When will we see it? ;)

At a bit of a loss now on how to enhance the very 1D'ness of the fishies.
Apart from giving them eyes, Ive tried placing gemstones along their flank, but that just looks so wrong its untrue ...

I have dotted teeny tiny gemstones all over the quilt, generally in a colour the same as they are on, so its quite difficult to photograph, at least in that pic there is certainly no bling!
.... and I have noticed that a certain white diamante, used within the surf is much sparklier than the others ...
Is it too much? Is it too lil ?
Oh God, I haven't got a clue and I'm doing this all wrong
Any ideas?
-
I like the flatness it helps them stand out from the stitching on the water if you put too much detail on them everything will have the same amount.. sometimes less is more
-
really ??? Oh please please let others think that way!
-
They look fine to me - don't sweat the small stuff, it's a lovely piece of work <3
-
It all looks good to me. Veggie's right this is a case of less being more. If you add too much bling it will start to look tacky.
-
I agree with Vege and Brenda, it's great as it is!! :)

These orange stones measure 2mm across so not too ostentatious I hope.
-
It is fabulous. No other word for it. :D
-
Very nice, you are clever Imi
-
Camera will be at the ready a week on Thursday, it's lovely.
-
So very, very pretty :) I love your jellyfish and starfish 8)
-
That is absolutely gorgeous.
-
Really ????
(Stands back amazed!)
-
Really! Be proud of yourself. Good job, well done!
-
That whale tail is inspired! Great vision.
I also love the colours and the sea foam and sky.
Here's a word I haven't heard used in this context for many years but it fits the bill perfectly...MASSIVE!!! :loveit:
-
Errrmmmmm ???
Whale Tail ????
-
That's what I'm seeing top right! Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and all that. Just say yes and humour me!!! 0_0
-
Now I'm seeing 'imself's boat...either or...
-
I can see the "tail" too
-
I'll agree to whatever peeps see ... but
(whispers) its meant to be the prow of a small boat!
I never imagined a whales tail!
Maybe be I'll lurk nearby and take a poll of what peeps 'see'!!

Ladies (and Germs if there are any in this part of the forum)
I would like to report great success with the blinging of the Undersea.
I arrived at the show a little trepadatious as to what I would find on locating it, so much so that I had on my person a small jar of sparklies, some gemtac and a toothpick with a blob of bluetack on end.
Yes Ladies, I was fully loaded and ready to go if a missing rhinestone caught my eye!!!
Coming up to the quilt I was relieved to see that none of the obvious stones ... on the starfish for example .. had come astray ! Indeed as far as I could tell all stones were present and accounted for ...
Phew! That Gemtac is good stuff isn't it ?? Can you imagine if one of the FoQ stewards had seen me approaching a quilt armed with glue and a pot of sparkles ???
And now at home, the Undersea is hanging proudly in pride of place in the lounge with all stones intact!
Thank you for all your help and advice ... because of you I will be less than terrified next time I need to add some bling!
