Title: Inspired by ...
Post by: UttaRetch on April 20, 2017, 18:53:43 PM
an item of ready to wear clothing.  What about a competition to make your own version of a ready to wear garment, be it high end or just something seen on the high street?

Did you see the '6 Napoleon' challenge that a few of us did last year?

It was fun.  I think it would be fun to put up a few inspiration pics, and let people choose which one to use as inspiration.  Or leave it wide open I suppose, but it's really fun to see several interpretations of one garment.

This was the inspiration for the '6 Napoleon'

This was my version, a fun steampunk take.  I wear the skirt A LOT

And here are the other three versions

I know you want to drag us all into steampunking, missus, however some of us are just not up to the challenge.   0_0

I was set off in this line of thought after receiving a John Lewis email featuring wedding wear and looking at some of the styles.

The Adventure of the Six Napoleons is a short story by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle featuring Sherlock Holmes. I guessed at the time that Dogstar must have named the dress after the story, but I confess I really don't know.

This story was updated as The six Thatchers (http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b0881dgp) in the latest Sherlock series.  If you are interested, you might be able to find it on BBC America.

The 6 thatchers! Do you all have to make those awful blue suits ( with piping don't forget ) that Maggie used to wear?  :o  :D
Btw... what exactly is steampunk... and... more importantly WHY ?

Google a few pics, it's a style, a look, a  whole branch of creative craziness.  It gets defined in lots of ways, often as the Victorians, in the future [ie now]

To me it's a combination of 'The Wild, Wild West' and 'The Laague of Extraordinary Gentlemen'.  I don't go for gadgets, but I like to wear Victorian/Edwardian styles, with an anachronistic edge, like using mad fabrics, or just sticking a bustle over my jodhpurs! [Take a look at my blog, and search for 'steampunk']

It's an excuse to make interesting garments, and to dress up, socialise, and have mad fun [like no-aircraft flying diaplays, nerf gun shoot outs, tea or parasol duelling, etc etc]

Today is the last day of the Whitby Goth weekend (http://www.wonderfulwhitby.co.uk/goth.html) which now spills over into Steampunk judging by some of the costumes.

It does indeed- they have the 'normal' goth weekends, and dedicated steampunk ones now.  ON the whole the 2 groups merge well, although apparently some goths have been objecting to the takeover, as steampunks tend to have a fair few
kids in tow, and goth are not always all that child-friendly...

There is a meme that steampunk is 'what happens when Goths discover brown'

0_0  0_0 It has also been said that grey is what goths wear in summer.

The new Sherlock series is on NETFLIX Mexico, so it must be available on NETFLIX USA

My white blouse for the White competition was inspired by this blouse(http://i.imgur.com/lgpyGPY.jpgl)
I opted for no yoke, but made the sleeves in lace a as well as the collar and back.
I love the idea of an inspired by sewalong competition. I snoop shop all the time and them interpret my own version.

Pamela dahlink!
We need to whip up some fervor about this topic.. Or fervently whip some peeps.
 I love this idea.
I am working on a chambray shirt also inspired by something that I saw on Pinterest.
Actually I am going to ask for desing advice. I know you will say you  do not like MORE lace from me.
And most likely I will ignore all advice, but it is worth a try!

I'd love to do a Vivienne Westwood style tartan drapey thing. I have tartan, I was given a book on draping for Christmas so.....

I fell in love with this VW jacket. Haven't been able to find a pattern which looks quite right though.

I luurrve that jacket. Don't think it would be too difficult to find a pattern like it or adaptable.

I have wasted a good few minutes wondering what on earth those clothes have to do with VolksWagen.   :|

DH was looking over my shoulder and thought I was talking about cars too! Of course you can wear your VW jacket in a VW car. Or any other car. Or just out in the street while looking fabulous!

I must have a dig round my old pattens. McCall made some nice jacket patterns a few years back and there might be something adaptable there.
