We seem to be back up and running.

Phew!

I've been watching the videos from this chap for a few months:
https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCDv2cPSdtczncDqYAksT6lA

Although he calls himself 'Sewing Machine Repair Guy', not all the videos are about repairing sewing machines. He does tear-downs which are very informative. It might change your view of the sturdiness of some modern machines…

Welcome Lounge and Information / Outage
« on: January 30, 2022, 13:29:11 PM »
Good afternoon, TSP.

The outage earlier today was a double whammy.

First, our hosting provider had server issues; second, part of our database crashed and had to be repaired.

Everything should now be running as normal.

Sewing Machines / Juki DLU-450-4
« on: May 22, 2021, 07:42:11 AM »
Very shortly, I shall be on my way to pick up a Juki DLU-450-4 industrial walking foot sewing machine.

It's a curious beast on account of it having an under-bed trimmer and a positioning system, yet it has a clutch motor. There's a bird's nest of cables connecting motor to control box to machine, so it's going to be quite a task trying to figure out what's what. It seems that the manufacturer of all this wizardry is Efka.

Making the machine look and run like new is my summer project. I need something to do during the seven week summer break!

Click the book title to see its Amazon listing. Photos of the actual items are attached.

Vintage Machines / Mr Twingo's Singer 95K40
« on: October 31, 2020, 20:06:33 PM »
Spotted on eBay with no bids, and located just a short distance away, I put in a 'best offer' for this lovely machine. Offer accepted! Collected it this morning. Serial number EF197494, manufactured on 27th July 1949.

The plan had been to give it a little TLC, patch up any scars, and sell it on, but it's such a perfect size that I'm going to keep it. It's not a black machine like the one @Roger has, but a silvery colour, much like some Brother industrial models from the 1970s.

Here are a few photos:

These are the leaving gifts I made for the Year 6 pupils at the school where I am so fortunate to work. Entirely cut, polished, slicked, bevelled, skived, and sewn by hand whilst I was furloughed. This style of stitch is known as saddle stitch, and is done with two needles wither end of a thread. Still room for some refinement...

If you're looking for an alternative to the Apple Pencil, Vipon has a discount code for today, making the cost just £10.

The stylus pen compatible with:
iPad Air 3rd Gen
iPad Mini 5th Gen
iPad 2018 6th Gen
iPad 2019 7th Gen
iPad Pro 11 Inch
iPad Pro 12.9 Inch

I have two codes, that can only be used ONCE each, and only once per Amazon account:
2S5C-D7XPLG-JRNGBV
2SYX-QXZCFR-TY5ABT

Amazon link: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B089SVB41Y
Once these codes are used, you'll have to sign up to vipon.com to get a new code.

I have a couple of these pens, both different brands, but otherwise identical, and they are seriously good. There's no pressure sensitivity, but there is palm rejection – if your hand accidentally touches the screen whilst using the pen, that touch is ignored.

Really, for £10, this is an absolute bargain. I wouldn't be without mine!

If you're looking for quality metal whatnots and thingamajigs, www.leprevo.co.uk may be of interest.

Primarily a supplier of goods for leather work, there is a good selection of heavy duty fastenings at very reasonable cost. You do have to add postage and VAT, though.

And the on-line shop is very old-school. Place an order, wait for a reply telling you the total due, then pay.

a: Free to a good home, a Singer 201k.
It's a brown aluminium variant. Sews like a dream, but will need a motor (hence it being free).

I bought it on eBay, but it arrived damaged, so three parts have been replaced: thread take-up lever, bobbin winder, and motor belt cover, all of which came from an old black iron machine.

The tension dial spring has been renewed, and every part cleaned and oiled as necessary. Also, there's a box of original Singer accessories (in a Singer branded cardboard box). Lots of new bobbins will be thrown in for good measure.

b: For Sale: Elna EX 340 sewing machine
About 5 years old, always very well cared for, this machine is mechanically identical to the Janome Sewist 525 (as used on the earlier series of The Great British Sewing Bee). Great first machine. Comes with a hard case, additional feet, user manual, and genuine Elna / Janome pedal.

I really don't know what price to sell it for. It cost £329, so £100 ONO.

COLLECTION ONLY from Bromley BR6 area (SE London / NW Kent – M25 J5, very close to mainline train station).

Sewing Machines / Machine for sewing leather – total bargain
« on: April 06, 2019, 08:01:01 AM »
I've found the perfect sewing machine for my needs:

√ Portable
√ Heavy duty (sews thick leather)
√ Accepts thick threads
√ Walking foot
√ Cheap

One of these, variously known as a cobbler's machine, shoe patcher, boot patcher, and leather patcher:

It's a Chinese machine, loosely based on the Singer 29K. Reviews are generally very good, though it is recommended to file down the rough edges, give the machine a thorough clean, and and make a few modifications here and there.

I've had mine only for a short time, but long enough to see that the stitch quality is superb. And that walking foot, it rotates so that you can sew in any direction!

The next adaptation I'll make is to raise the height of the needle bar so the machine will sew with industrial needles.

I'll post images of its capabilities ASAP.

Good day, TSP. I have a few things for sale, that may take your fancy.

ITEM #1: Elna eXplore 340 mechanical sewing machine
Lovely sewing machine, neat stitches, identical to the Janome 525s (Janome owns Elna). Light use, so it's in tip-top minty condition. Comes with hard case, genuine Janome / Elna foot pedal, all original accessories, but no box. Great beginner's machine.

Reason for sale: I am now using a Janome SMD 5018.
OIRO: £120

ITEM #2: Janome 9300DX Overlocker
SOLD

ITEM #3: 102 reels of Coats threads
Yes, I counted them! One hundred and two reels of Coats threads. Mainly for sewing, but a handful of embroidery threads amongst them. A couple have been used, but only a little thread from each. The majority has never been touched. Various reel sizes: mostly 100m with a few 500m. And hardly any repeated colours.

Reason for sale: I no longer require coloured threads.

First, I have a trio of machines to sell. All my equipment is lovingly cared for and well maintained.

I am open to offers on all items, so PM me with your offers. Due to the weight of the machine, collection is preferred, but I am happy to post the buttonholer. Pictures on request as I have no easy way to attach them here (though I will keep trying!)
