Tech Tutorials / Avatar beautiful!
« on: March 02, 2017, 09:29:06 AM »
Hello everyone,

Last night I did some work on making the avatars and the poster box (the one with your post count and such inside it) a little neater and nicer on both desktop and mobile (tablet e.g iPad still having issues).

The space that your avatar sits in is 150px x 150px wide. This mean if you have an irregular shaped avatar you will see a black background around your avatar.

If you don't want this, we would suggest you make your avatars a perfect square.

For anyone not confident in doing this, please send them to franchaselden@gmail.com and I will do it for you  :*

Previous sewalong entries / Official Stash Sewalong Competition
« on: March 01, 2017, 22:51:09 PM »
Hello everyone and welcome to our inaugural Stash Sewalong Competition!

Introduction
This competition is aiming to get everyone sewing from their stash. You must use stash only fabric for the majority of your creation.

Dates
The competition will run from Monday 13th March - Wednesday 12th April. You have until 23.59 on the 12th to complete.

Rules
  • Your item must use stash fabric! We ask that 90% of your item be sewn from stash fabric with the exception of linings. You can purchase zips, buttons, bindings, interlinings and linings. Use your own judgement when it comes to the 90% rule.
  • Stash fabrics are fabrics that have sat in the stash for at least three months
  • You MUST NOT cut your fabric until the 13th March. You can only wash it, dry it, prepare patterns etc. You cannot cut your fabric.
  • You must post at least 5 times in this thread to qualify. Please be involved and post updates!
  • You must submit at least three pictures; one of your uncut fabric, one of mid-construction, and one of the completed item.

How To Enter
Entries should be submitted by email to sewalongs@thesewingplace.org.uk with the subject Stash Sewalong.

Copy the following and fill it out:

Quote
Username:
Number of items to enter:
A short title and blurb about each item, no more than 150 words:
Number of metres used (per item and a total):
Attach three images as stated in the rules*

*If you have lots of images to share, send them in separate emails. Just write "1 of 3" etc in the subject line, or zip them up. Or use WeTransfer.  We strongly encourage if you have sewn a garment that you wear it or get someone else to model it for you. This is the main photo that people will judge you on and people really like to see others wearing garments, it looks a million times better than something hanging sorrily on a hanger! People are far less likely to be as critical of your body as you are, so please please please do consider modelling garments! These pictures will be posted in our gallery, on the voting page, and the winner's thread. If you have made a complete outfit with multiple garments, you can wear them together in one pic. Just state it in the email.

How To Win
Winners will be chosen by public vote.

Prizes
Yep, the most important bit...

First Prize
Your choice of:
  • £15 FabricGodmother.co.uk voucher
  • £15 Amazon voucher
  • £15 coffee shop voucher for your choice of Caffe Nero, Costa, or Starbucks
Runner Up Prize
As above, but with a £5 value

Tech Tutorials / Embed or share photos into posts
« on: March 01, 2017, 10:17:32 AM »
If you don't have subscriber ability to add photos to a post, or you want to embed them right into the post content rather than on the end of the post, you can use a third party image host.

You can watch a video of this process to see how it works, it takes less than 90 seconds!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6jsRBSvF9p4

Or follow these written instructions:

TSP recommends Imgur.com for sharing photos as it's easy to use.

Uploading to Imgur.com

1. Visit Imgur.com
2. Choose "New Post" at the top. You don't need an account, but having one will save all the photos you upload so you can go back and find them again.

3. Browse for photos on your machine, or drag the files into the screen. You can select multiple files.

4. Your imgur "post" will then be created. It might take a little time to process the images.

5. Hover on the image and you will see the URL to the image in the top right corner. Click and copy this.

Now you have two options

A. Share the link in your post. This will not add the photo right into your post but will give an external link to the post like this:

http://imgur.com/G6uof5I

B. You can embed your photo directly into the post but this requires some changes to the copied link, good for intermediate computer uses.

i. Add lowercase "L" to the end of the URL. This means "large" and is an appropriate size for the forum.
Code: [Select]
http://imgur.com/G6uof5Ilii. Add ".jpg" to the end of the URL. This specifies you're linking to a direct image rather than a web page.
Code: [Select]
http://imgur.com/G6uof5Il.jpgiii. Add "i." in front of the imgur.com portion of the URL. This tells Imgur you want the direct photo.
Code: [Select]
http://i.imgur.com/G6uof5Il.jpg
You can then include your new URL using the photo button for it to appear in the post, like so:

Patterns Discussion / Two new Style Arc patterns
« on: March 01, 2017, 10:05:06 AM »
Just noticed on the site this morning there are two new patterns. A woven coat and a knit top.

Coat very odd, but very Style Arc. Knit top much more promising in my opinion. Love the details - don't usually see details like this on a knit.

What do you think?

Welcome Lounge and Information / Suggestion box and bugs!
« on: February 28, 2017, 14:37:04 PM »
Hello everyone!

We are likely to have some teething issues and possibly some suggestions for things we want in the site.

If you have suggestions, please let us know here. We can discuss and will aim to give a "yes no maybe" based on whether it's possible and how long it might take.

If you spot a bug, such as a problem with the forum software or how something looks, please post it here for the time being. Please also include the following:

1. What the problem is (provide a screenshot if it's visual)
2. What you expected to see
3. What browser you're using, with Version.
4. What device you're using.

Thank you very much, hopefully there won't be too many problems!

Tech Tutorials / How to reduce image sizes before posting
« on: February 27, 2017, 14:29:50 PM »
When pictures come off your camera or phone, they're often really huge! Far bigger than needed to upload onto the forum. It helps us save on costs if you can reduce your pictures before posting or adding them to the gallery.

There are loads of ways to do this, but here's a tutorial for one option:

1. Visit Pixlr Express - a free online image editing software

2. Choose 'Browse'

3. Find the picture file on your computer

4. Choose Adjustment > Resize. Choose new dimensions, make sure the "keep proportions" box is selected so your image doesn't go squiffy! We recommend a maximum width of 500px, it should be big enough for most images to be seen clearly.

5. Choose "Apply". Then "Save" in the top left.

6. Rename your file if you wish, adjust the quality, then save to your computer for upload to TSP :)
