Vintage Machines / vintage zig zag machine
« on: July 01, 2023, 09:02:45 AM »
I have a very nice modern janome that does several fancy stiches and of course zig zag. I have some heavy fabric that should be sewn with a zig zag - think sail material from a boat. I don't want to ruin my modern machine so I'm looking to buy a second hand  more robust vintage one - with a powerful motor and does zig zag. Any ideas of what machine would be good?

Fun with Fabric / Blackout fabric
« on: June 10, 2022, 09:29:24 AM »
So far I have used blackout lining fabric for velcro-ing to the window frame. This works quite well and eliminates most of the light. Normal blackout Blinds always seem to have light at the sides and top. Is there a better method and better fabric. I notice that temporary blackout blinds are thin material - The lining fabric is fine for a while but wondered if there was something better and maybe cheaper? Any good ideas.? I need blackout blinds for small toddlers who visit and for me --I wake up far too early otherwise.

Borrow a machine . Before spending any money at all ask around friends and family -  it is very likely one of them will have something they don't use sitting in a cupboard that you can try out. That way you can get a bit of experience of sewing before actually buying something.

Vintage Machines / Re: singer 95k40 is it worth restoring?

Just an extra thought about the singer 95k40. Mine is not in a cabinet - it sort of sits on top of a cupboard and doesn't fold inside. I'd like to find a cabinet where it would fold inside. It's quite a small machine would it fit in other cabinets designed for say a 201 ? or a treadle - does it have to be specific for a singer 95?

Thank you for the encouragement . It will be my next project after I've finished re covering the conservatory furniture. Hopefully this year!

Thank you for replying I'll have a good look on youtube videos. I'm not a subscriber so I don't think I can upload a photo. It looks very like any of the vintage singers except less decoration and very slightly larger. There is no chrome anywhere but there may have been at one time.  The machine turns over and the needle bar goes up and down. All levers and other thread guides that are metal are rusty but moving. Underneath there doesn't appear to be rust. I don't think it is a clean with oil and wipe with a rag kind of exercise  Something much more aggressive is required. I'm not wanting the machine as an ornament but to use if it's any good as a sewing machine. Doesn't have reverse but not bothered too much about that.

Vintage Machines / singer 95k40 is it worth restoring?
« on: February 10, 2022, 09:40:05 AM »
I have a 1955 singer 95K40 . It is not in a good state- the main body is ok but all the metal bits attached e.g. tension unit etc are rusty. I anticipate a lot of work getting this to be usable. My question is should I bother? Will it be a machine that I like at the end of it all. It has a large black motor underneath the tatty table/cupboard which I haven't dared switch on - my thinking is if I can get the machine to work nicely I might upgrade to a servo motor for it with modern electrics. Singer 95 doesn't seem popular is there a reason for this?.

Thanks for replying - I may have to be patient re the needles but last resort is send for them from the USA but which buyer should I go for - there are a couple and also I expect there must be somewhere in the EU that sells needles

Yes that is one of the ones in the USA. it works out at over £20 for 10 needles once postage is included and until I have a needle I can't be sure the machine works ok

I'm trying to find needles size 24x1 for a children's sewing machine from the 1960 s . Any idea or has anyone got some I can buy

On the subject of toy sewing machines. I have one (singer 40k) and the problem I have is sourcing the correct needle for it. Apparently it originally had a 23x1 but they are now obsolete and it can work with a 24x1 needle. However there seems to be nowhere in the uk that stocks the 24x1 and the one place I found online said out of stock .Sending for them to USA costs a fortune but is there any other alternatives that anyone knows of? The needles I need are called 24x1 and DHx1. A real shame as I want to get this little machine working to let my little granddaughter have a go.
