Title: Block of the Month - June - Kimono
Post by: Iminei on June 01, 2017, 08:31:40 AM
Flaming June at last

and in honour of Junes Japanese Sewalongathon

May I present

The Kimono Block

https://goo.gl/photos/NEDqD55voVkBoyYf8 (https://goo.gl/photos/NEDqD55voVkBoyYf8)

This is a large block .... mine measured around 20" x 16" after squaring up .....
which would make a lovely wall hanging on its own or a quickly assembled quilt with sashing and a border.

9 Blocks with 1 1/2" sashing and 6" border will make a quilt approximately  62" x 74".

I've jumped straight in with this one while I've got a bit of time.

I have four bridesmaids dresses hanging up, waiting to be altered, (two are for next Saturday  :S), and I have another five to come,(wedding in August), which I've been phoned about...just awaiting their arrival. So I'm not sure how much sewing fun-time I'm going to be able to find.

I used some of my vintage kimono fabric for the mauve-y pink, and also the edging. Took me ages to rummage through my old boxes of stuff to find something which I liked the look of.
The kimono is a silk crepe, so it's got natural stretch to it...not ideal for patchwork. The off-white edging is also vintage kimono. It has a beautiful subtle sheen to it, which you can't see from the pictures...it's woven with a very fine silver thread.

Slightly distorted out of size due to the crepe, but I couldn't stop myself from using up some of my stash. Will definitely finish this off as a wall hanging.
Not entirely sure about the yellow strip. -<

Thanks Iminei. I like this one.

Sandra.

Well done Sandra, absolutely beautiful!

Wish I had a close up pic to truly appreciate the kimono silks. Agree about the yellow tho (unless there is some yellow in the fabric somewhere) also love you background...I used that as the border for the UT.

Lovely stuff and you're first through the BOM HOF's door this month... Off you go ....

Beautiful fabric Sandra.  Actually, I like the yellow.

Thank you!

I've tried to get a picture of the fabrics for you. It still hasn't picked up on the silver shine properly, but it's a better close-up.

The off-white fabric is printed with fans but I've cut into it to just get the plain colour. The fans are orangey shades so wouldn't have worked with this block.

I don't mind not doing the blocks Imi, I'd only throw them away anyway as they would all come out different sizes if I made them  :D This one would be far too big for me....and I hate wallhangings  ;)
I love to see other people's though, it's amazing how different they can look from each other.

Here is my BOM.  For those who haven't ventured on to the Japanese sewalong thread, the 3 kimono fabrics are the ones I am using for my Japanese garment - a kimono style robe.  The background fabric is the wrong side of some cotton lawn left over from a top I made.  I found it a bit tricky using 3 different types of fabric, especially the floppy lawn, and of course, was on the penultimate bit before it occurred to me that I could have used starch.

Just to say Thank you for everyone submitting their blocks, I was beginning to think BOM had lost its appeal!

There are a lot of things competing for my time at this time of year especially if the weather is half decent.  I've had visitors all weekend so I felt like a quiet couple of hours to myself in the sewing room - it's too hot to do much outside in the middle of the day anyway.

I'm not going to participate this month as I don't have any suitable fabric, but I'll definitely be back in July. :flower: <3  :flower:

I luuurv that Ploskin. You can swank about in your new robe and match the cushion/framed block/whtever you decide to do with it.
I just love that fabric. I've managed to not buy it because I bankrupted myself on Craftsy but it's still on my watch list.  :ninja:

I did mine with the same fabric that I've used for the other blocks, no Japanese type fabric in sight.

Where is the shame, Imi?  What have you done, apart from given us the opportunity to try lovely, new thongs? :[

Most BOM'ers achieve a uniform size of block so you can construct them into something usable at the end of the year.

I just started this to keep myself out of trouble and active over the year, so didn't even think about uniformity and sizes as can be very clearly seen from Malis ramshackle (my ramshakleality) collection.

and next months BOM (well the one I have been thinking of) will, I'm afraid, carry on the theme!

First belly laughs of the day.
I love the planning process so now the "thing" is...mmmm....how do we get around this slight setback.
There're always geese!
To celebrate successful completion I suggest we could have a thing thong!  :toast:

Don't beat yourself up Iminei, the BOM weren't meant to form anything, they were/are tutorials to get us to try different blocks - with VERY good results (not mine). I chose to use the same fabrics because that is what I found at the start. I put them together - on the floor to see what they looked like and took the photo. It's a great big THANK YOU from me because without what you have done I would probably still be doing easy stuff. Whether I put them into a quilt at the end remains to be seen.

Well. I did wonder if you'd considered that aspect round about February...but there's absolutely no reason why you can't have different sized blocks. Next year's challenge for you all, should you accept it, is to find a way to set them together, or turn them into underwear/footwear (depending on hemisphere you will understand thongs differently!) :)

Well. I did wonder if you'd considered that aspect round about February.

I considered nothing! I didn't even know whether anyone would take up the challenge, It really was an exercise to keep me doing something every month and not suppurating into catatonia ... Sorry!

And thinking about, Is that the end of the month looming up in my rear view mirror...Oh Dear!

It doesn't matter to me about the sizes of the blocks.

I've been thoroughly enjoying myself taking part.

When TSF vanished, one of the main things that bothered me was that I'd not be able to do the BOM. I'd been looking forward to trying to keep up with it every month.

It doesn't matter to me either, I am enjoying the challenge and learning curve  8).  I didn't give a thought to making them all to match together, they will be used in some way with other things.

Thanks Imi, for doing these, I am grateful for the lessons  :)

I've just caught up with this.....I've been m.i.a. with the BOM but Im you must never think your mahoosive, substantial efforts and contributions are anything but fabulous and delightful. I for one could never keep up your pace of contribution, imagination and encouragement that you mete out time and time again. It doesn't matter one zot if the blocks aren't the same size...that in itself sets a new challenge for the participants along with the fun of trying new techniques and possibly using them again in other projects.  :flower:

I wouldn't worry Imi. BOMs are all about trying new blocks and seeing what you like. You van make multiple of the same, or different fabric variations after you have tried them out. Fitting them all into a quilt is possible, just needs some thought - so repeat a row of the smaller ones, use some sashing to split up areas of similar design etc. Or make table runners, cushions, make lots of quilts out of blocks tested out in a BOM.

BOMs have always been a nice non committed way of trying new designs to see if it suits you. Not a way to get to a sampler quilt. Nothing against sampler quilts, but generally they have recurring fabrics and the blocks are all in a similar style - so a sampler of traditional blocks, of HST blocks, of Amish block, modern blocks, wholecloth pattern blocks, etc etc.
Thes BOM is not to create a sampler or a non sampler quilt, but to allow people to test out their skills on new ideas and on blocks they might never attempt!

If you would like some help on the contribution side I'd be happy to oblige. I've a tonne of inherited books I haven't yet done things from and have no real reason other than a sampler quilt and I never put it at the top. So contributing a block for people every so often would be great. I'd be happy to tackle some complicated ones that you don't like as well! And I need something to push me to make my cathedral mini quilt!

It's a lovely thing you've started. I haven't joined in because I can't find my fabric hamper and I'm eyeball deep in riding habit!

Found it!

I knew it was in one of my books. This is how you manage blocks of different sizes :) it's from one of the many blocks and samplers books I inherited. Shows what can be done with different sizes :)
