A Good Yarn / Re: AUTUMN SOCK KNIT ALONG. 2023 New
« on: March 17, 2024, 11:40:11 AM »
I am not missing but have been busy. I have had so many appointments that my head was spinning. I am back to one or two a week so life has settled down for me.

I got yarn out of the stash to make DD a pair of socks to go with a hat I made her. She loves the coppery colour of the yarn. I used a new pattern rather than make the usual K2P2 or a pattern I have already done. This one is K6P2 and it allows the colours of the yarn to show up vs a pattern.

I am going to start another pair of socks for DDIL tonight. I had a break and knit 2 hats to use up yarn that DD sent me at Christmas. The 4 balls of yarn she sent are now knit up. Two hats for her, 1 for DDIL and 1 for me.

@BrendaP, lovely socks and the pink pair are well worth finishing.

I finished DGS's socks last night and they will be delivered either this afternoon or tomorrow.

I am going to knit DD a hat next as she sent me the yarn for one. Then it will be back to knitting socks. I have 5 more pairs to knit this winter.

@Ohsewsimple, these are real challenges. How many stitches are you to cast on for the sock? What size needle are you knitting with? I use to knit DGS's socks on 3.25 mm needles when he was younger but now use smaller needles (2.5 mm I think). The first pair will be the challenge so I would keep the pattern simple. When I started knitting socks again I followed this series as I like the lady. I still watch them to make sure I am doing the heel flap, turn the heel, gusset and toes correctly. I also keep track of what I do in a book so I can refer back to how many rows I knit for each part and where I should change them for a better fit. I knit socks for 3 people.

When I knit the Hermoine's socks I wrote the pattern in my book so I could follow it easily. I sometimes knit along with the video stopping it so I could catch up. It was a great pair of socks the DD still wears in the winter. I then did this sock which had a harder pattern to follow but was stunning when done. I like this person as she talks about how to do adjustments. She also does certain things that she tells you don't have to do.

I am working on DGS's socks and have both legs knit.

I did a simple K2 P2 ribbing on these as they stretch nicely on his legs. I chose this colour as it was what I had in the yarn stash and fit a male. I want these done by the end of the month as I have more socks to knit plus a hat and a vest. I do keep busy knitting most nights.

@toilandtrouble, I am so pleased that I helped you fall into 18" doll sewing.

I fell into some depression this fall and when I got out of it, I was behind sewing for Christmas so the doll got neglected. I am now cleaning the sewing room this week and once done I will be back to sewing which will include dolly sewing. Not only for my 13 dolls but for two little girls who love to play with the 5 they have.

@Acorn, I hope you will show what you make for your godchild's doll.

Here is a page of doll quilts so the dolls can say warm.

Most McCalls doll patterns are great too. You get more pieces than you do buying independent designer patterns. I started with McCalls when I first made doll clothes. Just remember to hem most pieces flat and not in the round.

@Acorn, if the doll is a bit bigger than an American Girl dolls, you will have to make them a bit bigger. Oh Sew Kat has nice patterns for beginners. Sign up and you get a free skirt pattern. She also has hacks for her patterns. The patterns are well drafted, instructions well written

I just read on Rosie’s Clothes Patterns that AG doll clothes patterns fit Our Generation dolls. Check out her website as she has some great patterns also.

One thing I have found out is American Girl dolls are different sizes. Some are smaller, others normal and some chunky. To combat that I omit darks on the chunky dolls and make them deeper for other dolls. Keepers Dolly Duds patterns may have a cutting line added for chunky dolls.

Have fun sewing for the doll. It is addictive.

The socks are done and under the Christmas tree. I love the yarn and colours of these socks. They were dyed here in Nova Scotia.

I have cast on socks for grandson and have 16 rounds knit on them. He will get his sometime in January.

I am starting the gusset on the 2nd sock now and should have them done before Christmas. DDIL is anxiously waiting to wear them as the wool is lovely and warm.

I am behind as I thought I had posted for November. I sewed 4.6 meters and bought 3.8 meters. I bought the backing for the cardinal quilts and some fabric to make gift bags. I sewed mainly from the stash though I did use up fabric for one gift bag I had bought the fabric for.

I have a small amount of Christmas fabric left and it is tagged to make gift bags next year. I would like to make 2 - 3 a month until the fabric is gone. I can make one in an afternoon unless I do embroidery on it. I do something else while the embroidery stitches out. I would like to see no Christmas fabric in the stash by the end of 2024. I did well sewing it down the past 3 years and having all the old pieces gone will be nice.

I am not sure how much I will get sewn before Christmas though I do have 4-5 gift bags to make. Once they are done I will close down the sewing room to finish cleaning it. I want to have it clean for when I start sewing in 2024. Life is still busy with at least one appointment a week for my hip and knee and then a few others thrown in for blood work and the doctor. I am hoping to start walking on an inside track in January so will have to fit that into my schedule.

The first sock is completed and they look funny due to ribbing the leg. I love the yarn and how it knits up.

I have the 2nd sock started and got 25 rounds knit yesterday as we had a power outage due to the storm that was passing through. I hope to knit a lot every night so I can get it done. I have a lot of socks to knit this winter. Requests are coming in from family for new socks. I love that they enjoy wearing them.

I have been busy and forgot to post here. I have the first sock ready to knit the gusset. The yarn is a delight to work with though the navy yarn leaves residue on my hands.

DDIL and I found knitter's haven yesterday. I got enough yarn to make 2 pairs of socks. I am set until spring when we will go on a road trip (3 hours each way) to a new to us yarn shop.

I bought DDIL's sock yarn yesterday at a craft bazaar. Love it a lot and can't wait to start her socks.

I have stalled on my vest as I have been tired in the evenings. I am pushing myself hard to get strong so am doing yoga in the mornings and walking most afternoons. With my right knee and hip bone on bone arthritis, I need to strengthen the muscles a lot. I push myself hard to walk 1.6 km at a quick pace using walking poles. Both are tired today as I walked 1.5 km on cement floors yesterday. I am going to push myself to knit every night so this project gets done. I will wind the skein and put them out in sight to remind myself I need to get cracking on the vest.

I got another dress made for the Gotz dolls. I had to do a lot of altering to get it to fit. It did turn out cute in the end.

I will knit a sweater to go with it so she can stay warm while wearing it. Not sure what I will sew next for the dolls. I will have left over fabric from a shirt I am making for myself so may make something from it.

End of October tally is done. I sewed 4.05 meters of fabric and bought 0 meters.

I have to buy fabric in November. I need batting and backing for the cardinal quilts as the blocks are done. I also need fabric for a gift bag and a lunch bag. Will try to get them all at once so I won't have to go into the quilt shops for a while. I am still working on sewing down the stash I have left. My sewing time is shorter now as I have to walk most afternoons as part of my strengthening program. I am working on getting my muscles strong for when I will have to have my right knee and hip replaced. It will happen but I am hoping to delay it for at least a year. I see my doctor every 3 months and can get a referral to the specialist when I know the time is right.

I will be joining in after I finish my vest. We had temps up to 25C this past week making it difficult to knit anything. Anyways, I need to make DGS, DD, and DDIL each a pair of socks this winter. I will have to buy DDIL's yarn as she want the yarn to be silk like the last pair I knit for her.

Looking forward to joining in again this year.
