Title: Or rather NOT fun with Fabric
Post by: Iminei on June 16, 2017, 10:11:26 AM
The lovely backing fabric that Brenda found for My Star Block Swap Quilt has already arrived but there's just one problem!

It had a very well attached label stuck to the fabric, which on removing has left a very sticky stain!

Any ideas how to remove this, short of washing in hot water…which I really dont want to do.

The pic shows the pulled off label, me holding the fabric up which is stuck back on itself . You may be able to see the white glue residue on the fabric too.

OMG! What a bunch of p*****ks to attach something like that to fabric
I think you moisten with a damp cloth and then use a dab of nail varnish remover ( acetone ) rub it and the glue should peel / flake off

How ridiculous to stick labels on - can you send it back?  Definitely needs a letter of complaint at least.

Just a thought, have they allowed extra material for where the labels are?

I can't vouch for it's usefulness but it might be worth a go.
Or you could try the old trick of freezing it and picking it off.

WD40 gets label sticky off hard surfaces, no idea if it would work on that...

aaaannd B R E A T H E ......

just done a quick google and with a very hot iron and a couple of sheets of kitchen roll, All labels and most of the residue are gone...

Its still a tad sticky in the areas of the labels, but as the print seems to be the same both sides (like a batik)
I will use that side as the wrong side with a bit of free 505 attached!!

Now to compose an apologetic email to the lady who sent the fabric out super fast (I only ordered it yesterday morning and it was recorded delivery!!)   :\

Google is our friend!! Iw as just about to post the same advice. Glad you got it off without resorting to chemicals. Still don't know why they would do that?

Another thing you can get that works well are the wipes you use to remove the sticky residue from medical plasters and bandages. I can't think of the name of it but we used it loads removing dressing from the kids when I was nursing and is great and getting sticky residue of all sorts of things. It kinda dissolves the glue

Glad you've got the gunk off, but I would be inclined to prewash that fabric anyway.  Being wax blocked it could have all sorts of stuff left in it.

If you've got the nice weather that we have it won't take long to get it dried.

I haven't read all this thread but..  try putting it in the freezer overnight, it might then flake off.  Worth a try   :)

Edit:  I see you got it all off - good :)

ALL African prints have these VERY sticky labels on.  Even after washing there can be some residue.  I'm just aware of it now, and try to avoid the worst of it, or consign it to inner workings!

Considering the bargain prices and lovely quality of the stuff, I find it a minor inconvenience

At least they weren't marked with the dreaded permanent marker which I've just had to work around.

Those sticky lables are a pain though.  I've just found them on Linen.

Thanks Gals,

There is a more problematic problem now in the fact that it was in the pile of fabric in the Tsunami of wine's wake*...
So It may smell a lil more alcoholic than my usual quilts !

I'm not sure it's necessary to launch a quilt with a glass of wine....

Ironically I was going to suggest using alcohol poured on the fabric behind the label to get it off.... but I was going to suggest vodka not wine ;)
