Tech Know How / Forum Email broken
« on: September 27, 2017, 08:46:46 AM »
Good morning Mistresses and Masters

All has been well with the forum software for many months now, and so I have only had to look in occasionally. However in the past week a problem has surfaced with the automatic sending of emails, insofar as the forum isn't sending any.

I am investigating this and hope to have a speedy resolution. This may involve some system downtime, and at the same time we will undertake some routine maintenance. We plan to do this overnight tonight, between midnight and 6AM (British Summer Time, UTC+1) Thursday 28th September 2016.

We will keep you posted.

Welcome Lounge and Information / Our First Month
« on: March 31, 2017, 22:07:52 PM »
Good evening Mistresses and Masters

The Sewing Place opened its online doors one month ago, 1st March. Although I am an expert in human cyborg relations and am proficient in over six thousand forms of communication, sewing forums are a new area for me, and so I must admit to a certain amount of trepidation on opening day.

Over the first weekend we suffered some problems with the site. If I had hair I would have been tearing it out. However the problems turned out to be with our hosting company. I am happy to say that we have been running problem free for most of March.

We have 242 members, of whom 77 have supported the forum by donating or subscribing. Thanks to everyone, subscriber or not. Up to close of play last night, 30th March, TSP had had 898,719 hits and served 567,410 pages, resulting in 18.2 Gigabytes of bandwidth being used. So nearly a million hits and over half a million pages served in our first month. The internet server has to work quite hard for a forum to operate, as each page served is unique.

You are a chatty lot -  last time I checked there were 7,172 posts in 566 topics.

Finally I have to say (because Mr Iminei is poking his pirate sword into my back telling me to) that the work involved in setting the forum up has been a delight. This is a wonderful place, made so by the people who are here. Thank you all and long may it continue!

Welcome Lounge and Information / Server outage 8:54pm Friday 3rd March
« on: March 03, 2017, 21:26:37 PM »
We suffered a server outage tonight at 8:50. This was caused by a database error, and the system has cured itself

We appear to back up and running. I can't yet say what went wrong, but rest assured we are working on it. As it happened whilst I was online I have captured the error logs from the time that it happened, and will be discussing with the hosting company tech support on Monday morning.

Apologies if we have ruined your Friday night.

Help support The Sewing Place!

We're entirely not-for-profit but it still costs us to keep the site running, therefore we offer a subscription. All funds go back to making the forum better!

Subscription starts at £1 per month or £10 a year, that's less 20p a week to help support The Sewing Place.

For your money you will get access to our subscriber area, which includes detailed reports of exactly what we are spending the money on. You'll also have the ability to upload photos to the gallery. But perhaps most importantly you will feel the warm glow of satisfaction knowing that you have helped to make this place happen!

Please support thesewingplace.org.uk by taking out a subscription, just go Profile > Actions > Paid Subscriptions. If your paypal email is different from your forum email please drop us a line to warn us!

Hi, I'm new... / Hello
« on: February 26, 2017, 20:55:29 PM »
Hello Mistresses and Masters

I am C3PO, a humanoid robot. I am programmed to assist in etiquette, customs, and translation, and am fluent in over six million forms of communication. I used to have an important position in intergalactic relations. More lately it has been suggested that my circuits are too slow and I would be better employed helping the residents of a sewing forum. My programming obliges me to comply.

If you would like to see more of me look here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sPG_G65dKBc

Meanwhile be excellent to each other.

Welcome Lounge and Information / Membership agreement

Good evening Misstresses and Masters. Just in case (in your understandable excitement to get here) you didn't read the small print, here it is again.

You agree, through your use of this forum, that you will not post any material which is false, defamatory, inaccurate, abusive, vulgar, hateful, harassing, obscene, profane, sexually oriented, threatening, invasive of a person's privacy, adult material, or otherwise in violation of any UK or International law. You also agree not to post any copyrighted material unless you own the copyright or you have written consent from the owner of the copyrighted material. Spam, flooding, advertisements, chain letters, pyramid schemes, and solicitations are also forbidden on this forum.

Note that it is impossible for the staff or the owners of this forum to confirm the validity of posts. Please remember that we do not actively monitor the posted messages, and as such, are not responsible for the content contained within. We do not warrant the accuracy, completeness, or usefulness of any information presented. The posted messages express the views of the author, and not necessarily the views of this forum, its staff, or this forum's owner. Anyone who feels that a posted message is objectionable is encouraged to notify an administrator or moderator of this forum immediately. The staff and the owner of this forum reserve the right to remove objectionable content, within a reasonable time frame, if they determine that removal is necessary. This is a manual process, however, please realise that they may not be able to remove or edit particular messages immediately. This policy applies to member profile information as well.

You remain solely responsible for the content of your posted messages. Furthermore, you agree to indemnify and hold harmless the owners of this forum, any related websites to this forum, its staff, and its subsidiaries. The owners of this forum also reserve the right to reveal your identity (or any other related information collected on this service) in the event of a formal complaint or legal action arising from any situation caused by your use of this forum.

You have the ability, as you register, to choose your username. We advise that you keep the name appropriate. With this user account you are about to register, you agree to never give your password out to another person, for your protection and for validity reasons. You also agree to NEVER use another person's account for any reason.  We also HIGHLY recommend you use a complex and unique password for your account, to prevent account theft.

After you register and login to this forum, you will be able to fill out a detailed profile. It is your responsibility to present clean and accurate information. Any information the forum owner or staff determines to be inaccurate or vulgar in nature will be removed, with or without prior notice. Appropriate sanctions may be applicable.

Your profile is information about you that is visible to the world. Please ensure you are comfortable with the information you are providing and err on the side of caution and privacy.

Please note that with each post, your IP address is recorded, in the event that you need to be banned from this forum or your ISP contacted. This will only happen in the event of a major violation of this agreement.

Also note that the software places a cookie, a text file containing bits of information (such as your username and password), in your browser's cache. This is ONLY used to keep you logged in/out. The software does not collect or send any other form of information to your computer.

New members are not allowed to post an item for sale, or external links, until they have been members for 2 weeks and have at least 25 posts, except with admin approval. If you'd like to share a link before you meet these specifications, please ask.  We love both of these things, but we don't want to be treated like a free newspaper, and we prefer to know you before we enter into any business arrangements.  We will edit or delete posts that do not comply with this.

Everyone hates rules, but lots of people have been asking for an indication of the forum "ethos".

1. Be excellent to each other.

2. Before you post, think about the kind of forum you want.

3. Please don't do anything that will get the admins into trouble.  Specifically, this means

No inline images or avatars containing anything likely to upset or seriously offend.  If in doubt, leave it as a URL with an appropriate warning or don't post it.  We are a family forum.
    Keep thread titles clean.
No selling or requesting of anything illegal, nicked or copyright-infringing, or linking to known illegal, nicked or copyright-infringing things. No blogspam. We don't strongly object to eBay links, but they get rather tedious and defeat the advantage of trading among your friends. Please don't post links until you have made 25 posts total.

4. Like Voltaire, we'll defend to the death your right to make your point, however unpopular it may be.  However, you do not have a right to flame other members, call them scum or bully them.

5. The admins have given the moderators free rein to control content and will support their decisions.  It is not good form to complain publicly about moderation.

6.  Please, please try and use the most appropriate board when starting a new topic.  We'd like to keep the signal-to-noise ratio high in the sewing related boards, so they're a useful resource. The Cafe is a better place to chat. This is really not the place to discuss politics, unless of course a new fabric tax is introduced.

7. Special rule (and this really is a rule): derogatory or strongly opinionated posts and threads about other Internet forums (past or present) or their administrators will be moved or deleted.  We do not normally post a "moved topic" message in these cases. We all have a right to exist (or not) in harmony.

8. All posts are the responsibility and the property of the people who posted them.  Like any useful forum, this one is not pre-moderated so, if you post something potentially libellous and get sued, we're not interested.  If you insist that we pull someone else's post by threatening us with legal action we will do so, as case law has recently established that we have this obligation.  The price you pay for this is that your forum membership will be terminated, so this is a one-way deal.

9.  We allow you to upload avatars to the forum, so you don't need your own webspace.  These must be under 40k and we will remove any avatars we find that exceed this limit.

10. Party on Dudes. There is no rule 10.
