You can make one Mug Rug or a set of them ...
But please note that you must only expect ONE Mug Rug in return.

This could be shown by a pictorial theme
or the fabrics and colours you choose to use.

No one pass out. This year I'm going to participate. Don't get too excited. No, not really. Postage just went up in the US yet again. I'm done mailing parcels. So I won't be sending anything off, anywhere, to anyone. I'm just committing to making one for myself and ever so remotely one for my Bestie. She might not get it until next year, although her sister and I are working on her to come for another visit later this year.

I still can't get to my sewing machine. I could if I'd just go in there and move things, toss stuff etc until I had stuff situated but I simply don't. So, I'm gonna hand sew it if I have to.

Then I'll need an electric kettle so I have a reason to use it. Remember it's hot here, a lot, so hot beverage season is short.

But imma gonna do it. Promise.  :*

@Renegade Sewist - they come in for iced or very cold drinks too because the condensation on the outside of the glass drips on to the table otherwise. Iced beverage season here is short :D

Practice with gash fabrics first and WRITE the measurements down so when you hit the jackpot you know how you did it!

I've sketched a design & cut it into labelled pieces. I think the fabric will stretch if I try to machine it without any support. I think this might be called paper piecing? Instead of paper, could I cut the pieces from interfacing then iron them on to my fabric? Then stitch through the whole lot? If not, why not?

I've cut out the shapes in fusible interfacing, ironed them onto fabric, cut out & started assembling using a stitch length of 1.5 and seam allowance of 5mm. Does this sound OK? The problem I've just found is that I haven't added seam allowances  so where I've joined 3 pieces to one piece I have a 15mm discrepancy when joining the next piece on. Since this will be for the swap I don't want to put photos up. Can I salvage this? Cut new little pieces with seam allowance added? Can you tell I've never done this before & am too impatient to look up a tutorial?!!

I doubt very much if they're salvageable @Lachica  :sorry:  The fusible sounds a good idea but so would a tutorial be!! I am dipping a tentative toe into FPP and taking it veerrry slowly.

Haha! Good answer @Flobear . I've recut all the small pieces, I think I can get away with most of the big background pieces but have recut some. The background fabric was bought in South Africa from a women's shelter project. It's dyed in the sun using light reactive dye and leaves to create the pattern. I don't have much of it.

Yes, a tutorial might be sensible but I do like figuring things out myself. Just about to start sewing these tiny seams. At least I have time to abandon it & make an embroidered one if necessary!

The one thing I can suggest is NOT to cut the exact sizes for your design from the fusi before you iron it to the fabric ...

Draw the shapes in the size you need including seam allowances on the fusi .... cut around these with 1/4" - 1/2" or so extra, Iron the fusi on to the fabric THEN cut the shapes out exactly

Im not explaining this very well as Ive been pole-axed by some evil lurgy overnight and have a head full of cotton wool.

If the problem is you havent got enough fabric to redo  .... Dont worry about it ... None of us know which fabric you were going to use ....

Translate the above into Mandarin, it will probably make more sense!  :faints:

I would love to join in this time, but we've got a funeral, a wedding, 2 birthdays, house guests and a week in Wales in the next 3 weeks so I very much doubt that I'd complete anything at all, let alone anything that I'd dare to show to the world  :D

Well, @Kad , you could do what Renegade Sewist is doing and pledge to make one for yourself / a friend without the time constraints of joining in the swap. And if you do want to 'show it to the (TSP) world' so much the better  :D

@Iminei thanks. Yes, I drew my design, cut it up, used the cut pieces to cut out interfacing. Ironed on to fabric, cut out & realised the tiny pieces are so tiny that 5mm seam allowances leave......practically nothing! Doh! I always include seam allowances on garments  :S With modification (adding in a couple of extra background pieces) I'm getting there & quite enjoying the process.

Just spent an hour looking through  placcy bags full of bits I never throw away,

Really i should be rid of a lot .

I eventually found some ready cut squares left over from  a quilt made long ago and hopefully some fabric that will  blend with them.
Now to find time to make it  :S

Generic question for everyone. What do you usually use in the middle?  I'm assuming we want flat stable surfaces so our skinny mugs (I have them.) and ice tea glasses don't fall over. Probably need heat repellent for fine furniture as well as moisture resistant for most of them. Insulbrite? Fusible interfacing type, like the thicker stiffer stuff for craft applications? Wool felt?

I have no idea except that polyester batting would be way too puffy.

Well I use a layer of stabiliser (as most of mine are embroidered by Elvistoo) and a layer of curtain interfacing from the Interior Design shop  in town. The reason I do this is it gives a certain weight to the MR ... which, as everyone knows,  = quality !!

If I used wadding I would use two layers to give the same weight/heft  but remember the three laters would be supremely joined together by all the embroidery.

For the appliqued MR's I made before I had Elvistoo I used a cotton wadding ... I cant remember how they felt as they were so long ago ... @StitchinTime @Sandra  ???

If I do a round mugrug, I generally use an unwanted CD /DVD in the middle:
 Spray glue a piece of quilt wadding or something similar to each side of the plastic disc and trim very close to the disc. Then a light spray of glue to adhere a piece of fabric, (pieced/embroidered/appliqué/plain) to each side and sew, using the zip foot, close to the disc. Trim with pinking shears. These are washable and make use of unwanted plastic. :angel:

If you really feel creative you can add prairie points around the circumference, use appropriately coloured fabric for the centre and you have a flower mugrug! :flower:

I think Insulbrite is used to protect from Heat as in placemats and hot plates ... Me ? I put a newspaper under the placemats if Ive preheated the plates ... these days.

Too late to save the Dining table surface tho' ... but then again, too many quilts have been layered on the top too (and RC'ed on  :rolleyes: Oooppps!!)

And then, most of my MR's bear a cold glass of something with the occasional cup of coffee, and if thats hot enough to go through a MR and damage the surface of a table it will do multo damage to my lips!

I've not thought to use insulbrite either. I use the stabiliser for my embroidery machine plus whatever wadding offcut that fits and I can find. They've been plenty good enough for mugs of tea/coffee in our house.
I hope previous recipients of my coasters/mug rugs haven't been inconvenienced by this lack!! I can assure everyone who has sent me a coaster/mug rug that all have behaved impeccably in daily use  :P

I'm not in on this one (again) what with MrC's surgery and recovery and back and forth to Montpellier for my eyes then my hip etc I don't need any more stress. Hopefully I'll be in a better frame of mind for the Spring.

@William she stitched carefully around the outside of the CD, possibly using a zipper foot. She then used pinking shears to trim near the stitching.  Any surface decoration was done before assembly.

Right, As we are looking like such an Elite and Exclusive group I might just mix this up a bit!

We are, as stands, a group of under 10 entrants .... Are we happy with that?

Sorry to spoil the party, but the design I chose is a little more fiddly than usual, so I don’t think I’d want to do 10. I’ve made 4: 2 were definitely trial runs, but I’d need to do easier ones if I needed to make 10 …and would we all be able to use all these mug rugs?

As others have said, I really don't need 10 more mug rugs. I'm building a small collection because I always do a practice one that I keep. Also, mine is a little fiddly and I would prefer not to make 9 more.

Am about to send my address. I thought deadline was 29th. It is ! :)

Nothing wrong with a small group but perhaps give people a provisional swappee so they have a chance to let you know if they had the same recipient last time. Which is what happened to me and I asked to swap my swappee but that caused things to go a bit awry.

Ok ... One swappee per person it is then ....

I think there are 10 now and I have a list of previous swaps so will endeavour to ensure you all get a new swappee.

William is in Germany as you know so the postage will be a smidge higher but as a MR can go as a letter if thin enough that shouldnt be a problem.
If you do have an issue with that please pm me privately.

Swappees will be given out tomorrow morning.

How come I can put binding on a large quilt without problems but am having trouble with a 5 inch square one?!

@Bill , sometimes called bagging. Piece or applique the top. Cut your wadding and backing same size. Put top and backing right sides together, put the batting on top, leave an opening on one side so you can turn it right side out and otherwise sew around the perimeter. Trim your excess batting a bit on the seams and especially the corners. Fold in the seam allowance on the opening. You can blind stich it if you like otherwise just topstitch around the perimeter. You can add quilting if you like. Pretty easy peassy

I've done binding on my last couple mugrugs. They're...tricky. It's when joining the ends that causes the problems for me coz I have to undo almost two sides to get enough fabric free to sew it then try to reattach it to the rug.
Struggling with a lack of imagination this season...again.  :rolleyes:

Peeps! Peeps ...

Save your sanity ... DONT bind these lil mothers ...

Bag them out, then neatly topstitch around the edges!!

Piece or applique the top. Cut your wadding and backing same size.

I would suggest that the side you are going to leave .. partially .. open is cut slightly oversized to give you enough of a flap to tuck in.

For example:-

MR 6" x 6 1/2" ... Wadding 6" sq  ... Backing fabric 6" x 6 1/2" .... leave an opening on the 6 1/2" side,
After you've sewn around the edges, tuck in neatly then topstitch/slipstitch to close ... leaving a MugRug of 6" sq.

Just got back from my 10 day trip to the my home in the US of A. One of the reasons that I have chosen EPP as the
base idea for my MRs. Got them all done just have to add a might of quilting before i send them out on Monday.

I also, BTW do not bind my MRs..

Thought I'd print and pay for postage online but when it got to the last page I was offered free collection by my postie and one or two other choices but no option to just pop it in a postbox !! I don't want to have to wait in for this or leave it in a safe place so now I'll have to go into the PO and just hope I'm not stuck behind an e-bay seller.

So it probably won't be going today now.

I did remember to put some capital letters on the back, though. I thought NORWICH  but I don't know the recipient terribly well so went for SWALK instead  :laughing:

Finished my mug rug today after tussling with the tension on my embroidery machine. I should have read the manual - I'd got the wrong bobbin holder in  :facepalm: All sorted now and I will be packing  the mug rug up soon to pop in the post.
I was pleased with my fabric and thread choices for a change. And no binding involved!!  :laughing:

@Celia yes I used the embroidery machine for the leaf design. I wanted bright thread against a dark background to really show off the design.
I had a small amount of the lovely leaves fabric I used for the backing. It was very thin so I interfaced it.

Angie is the best when it comes to ruler quilting. I’ve done face to face and on-line courses with her.  Last winter I did her Jewel Quilt Course and produced

It’s finished now and on a bed and it makes my heart sing every time I look at it.

The American owners of Westalee rulers produce lots of new rulers and these days they are very expensive but Angie tends to make designs that only use the sample set.

To do a design like the mugrug I apply Bondaweb to the back of the plain fabric and then remove the backing paper. The next layer is the patterned fabric and then the wadding.
I quilt using rulers, templates and a very short stitch length. I then do the tricky bit. You have to cut away the top fabric to reveal the patterned fabric below.  It’s just a bit fiddly but small sharp scissors are your friend. You then press the sandwich to fuse everything together.

My next project is a cushion for a friend’s Christmas present.

Yes, both of them were done on my embroidery machine. Both designs came from Kreative Kiwi as well and what is even better is that both were free!! (skinflint? Me? Shocked you would even think it!!!  :laughing: :laughing: )

Wow, they are all just gorgeous! I'm glad I didn't take part, mine would've looked very shabby compared to all that loveliness! Off to discover ruler quilting.......
