Access All Accessories / Leather Bow bag
« on: November 28, 2023, 20:12:35 PM »
I started on a carry/storage bag for a bow trainer called an Accubow;

Accubow

It can be safely drawn and released without an arrow, making it useful to home practice. But I’ve got to store it when it’s not in use. I have a big piece of soft magenta leather that I am using to make a storage bag.

So far, I have cut the pieces, sewn on a pocket and sewn the front & back together. I have also made the box pleats. I still need to put a bunch of snaps across the top & sew on the straps. I will be using nylon webbing (I didn’t have enough of the magenta leather to make straps.

This has been challenging as it is the biggest thing I have sewn from leather. Also, making the box pleats meant sewing across thick seams. What worked was just turning the hand wheel & going one stitch at a time, over the thickest parts.

Patchwork & Quilting ... Welcome to the Darkside / Binding width
« on: November 20, 2023, 18:00:45 PM »
How wide or narrow do you like your quilt binding?
I like it a bit on the wider side since I find it easier to handle. Also, I prefer the look.  I have, however, been scolded (rudely I must say) by folks who insist that only the narrowest possible binding is acceptable.

A Good Yarn / Crocheted yarmulke
« on: November 02, 2023, 12:10:18 PM »
I had some silk yarn left from another project, so I used it to crochet a yarmulke for myself. (In more traditional circles, they are only worn by men., but I am not so traditional.). It is currently being blocked on a styrofoam wig form.  Of course there are pins in it, to hold it in place.

Whenever I see it with the pins in it, I keep thinking it looks like a nice Jewish Martian.

Sewing Machines / Brother NS80E
« on: October 19, 2023, 21:43:13 PM »
This is the machine that should arrive tomorrow.  It is a portable, intended to replace the other small Brother machine I have now.  The other one still works, but I wanted some of the higher-end features; most notably a threader that is easier to use.

Linky

More after it arrives.

Misha Bear (whose name is the beginning if the healing prayer in Hebrew) likes to join me when I stream services.  I had already crocheted a little yarmulke for hm, a while back. So now he wanted a Tallis (traditional Jewish prayer shawl). So I obliged by crocheting one. I used variegated silk yarn and I love the result.  Here he is;

Access All Accessories / Leather tote
« on: September 21, 2023, 22:36:18 PM »
This is leather tote 1.0. I followed some poor instructions on proportions, plus I did a poor job on the box pleats. So I thought the best thing to do was to finish it & learn what I could from it. It has a fabric lining with an interior pocket. But it’s awkwardly tall & narrow. So I will use it for a project tote & try again with different proportions.

Embroidery and Embellishment / I need an idea for wording.
« on: August 09, 2023, 13:43:15 PM »
My nephew Scott & his wife are expecting a baby girl in a few weeks.  I've already got the quilt near done.  But I have enough fabric to make a little pillow.

I want to make a support pillow for the new mom & dad to use when holding the baby on their laps. I would like to embroider something on it, to indicate its use, but I'm just not quite sure what would work. Keep in mind that I can do a 4" x 4" area. Any suggestions would be welcome.

I made this for a Christmas/Chanukah in July challenge on another site.  It is embroidered on 100 lb. Card stock.

House Beautiful / Quilt Guild throw pillow
« on: July 07, 2023, 20:45:49 PM »
My quilt guild is gearing up for next year’s show. We all make some throw pillows, to be given as door prizes. I just finished one, using a couple of extra 9-patch squares.

Access All Accessories / Key fob for my tote
« on: June 22, 2023, 23:01:26 PM »
I have a big tote bag, which has no good place for my keys.  I was going to buy a key fob, until I remembered that A) I sew B)I've always got ribbon and C)my husband always has a stash of carabiner clips like this but smaller.

So I cut a 6" length of ribbon (my favorite- blue, with little green dinosaurs) and folded it over.  I sewed the folded ribbon to the inside of the bag & attached the carabiner clip to it.  Problem solved without spending any extra money.

Sewing Machines / Janome Heavy Duty
« on: April 20, 2023, 14:52:55 PM »
My hobbies include leather crafts.  I have made a couple of attempts at sewing light weight leather on my Brother. It worked, but not well. I wouldn’t even try heavier leather on it.

For small pieces I don’t mind hand-sewing, but I haven’t attempted any really large ones, because it would just be too much for these old hands.  So I ordered the Janome HD3000, which comes well-recommended for leather.  I should have it next week. (That will give me a new toy to play with, while I recover from my surgery.)

Dolls and Toys / Outfits for Jack
« on: December 19, 2022, 12:28:39 PM »
Lumbar Jack is our Holiday Skeleton. We plan to dress him up for every imaginable holiday.  So far, I have made him a personalized scarf & a little kilt for Robert Burns Day. Here is his picture.  I will post some pics of his outfits a bit later.  BTW, any ideas for other holiday outfits I can make are welcome.  [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

What lies beneath... / Frankenbras…the Sequel
« on: December 09, 2022, 15:22:40 PM »
Now that I have had my lift/reduction, none of my old bras fit. After trips to 2 department stores, I managed to find a couple that meet my medical requirements and fit me.  It’s not easy to find a wire-free, front-closing 42C, but I managed.

But I still need to lengthen the straps, though less than before.  So far I’m almost done with the white one, but still need to do the black one. (The white one looks pretty good.) Pics when I’m done.

Access All Accessories / Drawstring bag for Archery Gear
« on: October 25, 2022, 16:33:24 PM »
I made a lined drawstring bag with contrasting casing, for one of my bow stands. I always have some jelly-roll strips lying around and they are just the right width for casings. Basically, you make your casing out of 4 strips- each is 2.5” wide and 1/2” shorter than the width of your bag. So my bag was 8.5” and the casing was 8”.

It’s a nice look for holiday gift bags, if you coordinate the colors for the holiday (e.g. red & green for Christmas, blue & white for Chanukah, etc.)

Here is the one I made.

Patchwork & Quilting ... Welcome to the Darkside / Quilt as you go
« on: October 19, 2022, 21:33:27 PM »
This is my first attempt. It’s just a small sampler that I was given at the quilt guild meeting. Someone else had started it, which is good. The written instructions weren’t great, but from what was already sewn, I could see what to do next.

The front looks OK, but the back is a mess. That’s partly because I had trouble with the thread tension; every setting I tried seemed to be either too tight or too loose. Eventually, I found it, but there was already some sloppy stitching down. Also, I made the mistake of following the directions which said to use white thread. The back is a red plaid and I’d have normally used red thread.
