Title: Murder Mystery Quiltalongathon
Post by: toileandtrouble on February 05, 2019, 12:22:01 PM
My son sent me a link yesterday: https://murdermysteryquilt.com/
Each month for a year,  you get a chapter of the story and pdf instructions for a quilt block, which builds into a picture giving clues which help you solve the mystery. Unfortunately it closed at the end of January or I might have been tempted, even at $9 per month.  Different techniques in the blocks.

@toileandtrouble  ...  I clicked on join now and it was letting me join as a monthly or yearly subscriber ?!

I havent put my details in so at which point did it say closed for subscriptions ??? I didnt think these BOM style things ever closed their doors to subscribers, you just have to catch up and/or see others blocks before youve made them.

I am tempted tho I would like to see previous quilts to decide if the style is for me.

I thought it was a group - open any time, but a sewalong  for 12 months for that quilt. I did wonder if I could play catchup if they let me, but remembered I already have more than I can do.  Did wonder about next year though.  Going back for another browse. Don't talk me into it!
Oh dear, reading FAQ it says registration open until Feb 12.  Switch set back to Dither
You can join for just one month and then cancel if you don't like it. Presumably you could then see gallery or something like it. It mentions Facebook, which I don'r do.

Question for all you experienced quilters.
How much time would you expect to spend on an 'average' quilt block?  I realise this is a piece of string question but it would help my dither if I had a ballpark figure.
I really like the sound of this but there is such a lot else I really ought to do.

If this helps any of you, here is a recent blog post (http://whip-stitch.com/quilt-and-solve-crime-in-2019/#more-13852) showing quilts from some of the previous Murder Mystery quilt series. Also, she mentions doing Modern, original blocks on the website.

I have enough trouble picking fabrics that make an attractive quilt when I know the pattern beforehand. I'm afraid I'll really mess up a mystery quilt and that might put me off quilting altogether. Then what do I do with all of this fabric?  :thread:

Thanks RS ... That was an interesting read and it was good to see previous examples of finished quilts.

The ones, in my opinion, that worked the best were with either a very dark or very light background ...

There  seems to be a fair bit of FPP going on and some applique too and there is certainly some appeal to leaving it to someone else to choose your design (hers seem fairly modern which is good) for taking you out of your comfort zone.

I think I might enrol, (I dont have much on otherwise do I ???? ... NOT!!!!)

As a sort of intermediately experienced quilter I finished two 11"x22" blocks last night. Each block had 27 elements but they are fairly straightforward cuts and I was watching an old episode of Bake Off at the same time.
This is virtually no help at all I realise.
Depending on the complexity of the blocks it is indeed like a piece of string but I do find that most of my time spent 'making blocks' goes into the thinking rather than the doing!  :S

The clock's ticking...you have three days left before time runs out... :P

I've spent the last couple of days thinking of fabrics and trying to choose what I hope will work nicely.

I'm looking forward to trying this but I won't be joining in with the group on there and uploading images on Facebook and/or Instagram to gain extra 'clues'...(I'm not on Facebook or Instagram  ><)
So far, I'm happy with the instructions, I enjoyed the first chapter of the story, and I'm curious as to how it will all come together.

DIL and I still deliberating if we will have time.  @Sandra  could you possibly estimate how much time we might need  for the first one?  We thought it would be nice to have our own mini group (of 2!)   It would be something we could do together even though we live a fair distance apart and can't meet up very often.
Title: Re: murder mystery - seen this?

Shall we have our own mini group on here ???? I could be in with a lil encouragement as its only £7 a month.
Title: Re: murder mystery - seen this?
Post by: Sandra on February 10, 2019, 08:40:48 AM
Oooh...erm  :[ ....how long?....hmmm...

I'm not very good with estimates, and I don't have the fabrics yet to be able to time myself....so...I'll say the first block is pretty simple.  -<

Nothing complicated. It needs some half square triangles. It's all machine pieced together, there's no fussy applique or anything hand stitched on this.
You need to make two blocks the same of this first one.

Based on this first block, it looks like it ought to be do-able with time/distance restrictions. Obviously, I've no idea what the rest of it's going to be like.

Hope that helps... @toileandtrouble .

Lovely!  :)

I'm awaiting a bundle of different Spraytime fabrics to arrive in the post. I've found an online shop which sells it at £3.95 per half metre...(Pinflair, if anybody's interested. It's a funny site to search on, but enter spraytime in the search box and the range should show up.)

I've bought from them before and was surprised when the fabric arrived in half metre cuts...NOT in a single piece. It didn't matter to me for that (or this) project but it's worth mentioning.

I'll see what my selection looks like and I'm hoping I'll have a few FQ's in my stash to make up the rest of it.
My background is going to be a sandy neutral colour. My first thought was for a turquoise sea blue...Hawaii  :)... but I (over)worried about the fabrics to go with it...so I've gone for the sand instead of the sea.

Celia, You are hardly a beginner! If you can sew I think you're good to go!

Any other takers ?????

I think there is a prize draw for everyone who posts a pic of their block (before the next months block is out) for the whole year (similar to the Darksides BOM) ... so if you were interested in that aspect, better sign up soon as the deadlines seem to be the 12th of the month.

3.5yds main colour, 10x .5 yards of feature and accent colours and 5 fat quarters.  Plus backing of course.  Finished quilt is 60" square.
As you can guess, I'm in too.

@Iminei  You already have the fabrics, and you're ready to make your first block!?  :S

I don't know whether to admire you for having such a stash that you're able to start immediately, or to be shocked that you have so much fabric in your stash that you can put your hand on pretty much anything needed at a moments notice.  :P 0_0 ;)

For those on the outside, the theme is Hawaii.
I am using all  sorts of offcuts of colours.  Not in FQs but bits that will add up.  COVER YOUR EYES LOWENA.
I have enough dark green for the background - not my favourite, but this will be a scrap quilt, even if it is following a design. Just off to find an excuse for the colour - will there be deep enough forest? Might just buy a little bit for the feature colours.  And black, I don't think I have black in the right sort of fabric.  Jersey and suiting not good?
Alternatively, deep coral (I'm so fashionable!) but then the colours would need to be different to contrast.
I've checked - that vegetation looks dark green to me!
@Celia there are video tutorials for quilting techniques included, and online help. You should be fine.

And of course there is help from here!!

Yes I have an embarrassingly large stash;  but Im going to batik it all the way and my batik stash can be seen from space ...Oooopps!

I havent actually chosen any colours yet but I have printed out the block and colour suggestion sheets,  ...  Ive just completed last weeks temperature quilt but this will be next after something to eat!

I am still sitting on the fence trying to decide, I really want to get into a bit more quilting but think I should find a way of using up the fabrics I have already bought, maybe project Linus quilt would be more appropriate to me.
@toileandtrouble  thanks for information re video and help also the fact that you are using scrap fabrics, I do have quite a lot of fat quarters just not sure they are going to be the correct colours.

Please keep posting off this thread though as I am dying to see what everyone does.

@Celia
Main colour she had down as 'your favourite colour) that's the 3.5 yards.  Half a yard for stems and leaves, Two toning halves for feature (about 1/3 of quilt I think) and another to make the first one 'pop'  which I am  guessing is to bring it to life.  The others are accent colours.  5 lots of halves (could be 2FQs?) and 5 single FQ
Does that help you look at your stash with new eyes?

Managed to finish my first blocks.
Handy hints for those who don't know them:
1. Do not cut backwards if the rotary cutter doesn't cut cleanly. It will infallible cut out and trash the piece you are working on.
2. Follow the instructions, especially about which side you attach the pieces.
3. Do not iron the joins until you have checked them. It will make them harder to unpick.
4. Have sewing machine, cutting mat and ironing board all on the same floor of the house.
As you can see, I have learnt a lot already.  Always ready to save you the journey!

The main package is (I think) on its way.  :)

I think these should stand out nicely against my plain, sandy, beigey background. I'm looking forward to all the fabrics arriving so I can see if they work as well together as I'm hoping they will.

OK...

This is where I'm at so far.

I'm happy with my featured fabrics.  :)

I need to adjust the accents/half yard pieces...that's the middle ones in the picture. I've got some good blues ( and a green, I think?) coming in the post which I hope will sit in amongst them better. This selection looks like something's missing.
....then I'll have a better look at the fat quarter/accents pile to see what goes best.

I now know that February's block shows that AC9 ought to be leafy green, so that's what the odd piece is sitting by the olive colour.  :)

I like the Olive ... and (like the lady from the Aldi/Lidl ad) I like the patterned green next to it...

Why not use the Olive behind and the patterned in front ???

I also like the fuschia in the same pattern (Im a great fan of using the same range of fabrics within a project)

Hang on, here are mine, I managed to get them all in a 4litre RUBox

Excepting the background blue batik which, as youve probably guessed, does not come from Cherry Tree ... So its Midsommer or Doughty's or nearest match!" Oooh errr!

Why not use the Olive behind and the patterned in front ??

That's what I'm going to do.  :) I have the 'half yard' in the olive and only a fat quarter in the patterned green...so that's what I'm going to have to do.
I mustn't buy even more fabric... :[

Love your fabric stash.  :loveit:

Everyone's colours look  lovely.  I'm changing my background, it is not the blue/grey colour my computer shows, but a dull green and I realise now, it wouldn't look very cheerful as an overall theme, so I have bought  some patterned blue that reminds me of sun on shallow sea.
Bought some of the accent colours too and ordered some from Pinflair.  @Sandra yours seem to have taken a long time to arrive, hope mine come before I need them. I know I have to redo the first blocks, since I have swapped the colours around.
My first leaf is on the fabric  and I am experimenting with the edging stitch.

Yes...Pinflair   -<

My order took two weeks between placing the order and it arriving. As I've mentioned, the main background colour was out of stock.  :(
And...another one of the fabrics I ordered isn't in the package...(Blueberry Spraytime)... so I've had to send them a message about it. I'm still waiting to hear what they say.

Don't want to grumble. The price is very (very!) good for the half metre, and it's not urgent for me to have the fabric, but I must admit I've felt a bit impatient waiting for it to arrive.

Looking good @toileandtrouble .

That's lovely background fabric...I see what you mean about the sun on the sea.

Have you done satin stitch around your leaves? It must have taken aaaages to go all round that!

Oh yes, ages!   It was a bit fiddly round the curves. I think that is where the puckering comes from, trying to turn it as it went. Much better to do 2/3 stitches and then turn with the needle down. You live and learn.
Has your background arrived yet? You won't be able to start at all, how frustrating.  I'm sure you'll soon catch up though, you sound very organised.

I can't see any puckering. It looks lovely.

No background yet, but it's been dispatched. It's coming from Doughty's.  :) I ordered a...couple  ;)... of other 'maybe' fabrics to try with the bundle I have so far.
Whatever the fabrics look like when they arrive, I must NOT order any more. I'll have to use what I've got.

By the time I've got these two months done, it'll nearly be time for the March block to be released.  :)

You did put something behind the fabrics, interfacing, paper, kitchen towel to stabilise, didnt you?

I dont think it was included in the destructions but having appliqued extensively in the past (and used up all my medium weight interfacing with The Village) I knew I had to, I used tracing paper!

BTW, I see no puckering either!

BTWBTW ... Lovely background fabric, very David Hockney!!!

Actually bonded the pieces  first, it was the edge stitching that caused a bit of a wrinkle which I think was on the small turns when I was 'helping' it a bit. I think I could do better another time, but I will attack it with the iron soon.

I think I'm happy with these. The colours are brighter than they seem in the photo, and the blue fabrics are less alike in reality than they look in the picture.  :S

I'm going to leave it like this, unless we have a block which is asking for fabrics to be put together which look absolutely vile, (or completely wrong) together...then I'll re-think it as we go along.

Oooh...lovely!

I've been cutting out for my two months of blocks. I've got a neat little heap of pieces for the 2 January ones, and I've got my first leaf stuck onto the 2nd block awaiting me to decide how to stitch it on...(and also making sure I'm feeling patient enough to start stitching it on.)  ><

I've also bought a little folder with slip-in pages, to hold my chapters and block instructions.  8)

January...

and February...

I outlined my leaves using my 'towelling stitch'.  ><
I've had my little old Bernina for over 20 years, and last year I decided to have a look at the special stitches I can do on it...I know...I don't rush myself, do I?  0_0
(When I bought it, all I needed it to do was straight stitch, a zig zag, and a nice buttonhole. The only other stitch I've ever used has been the blind hem for when I do curtains.)

I now have a little bit of fabric with samples of the stitches. Number 11 - Towelling, is like a blanket stitch...so that's what I've used. Not sure I'd have had the patience for satin stitch...toooo curvy.

@Sandra  Glad you are up to date! I have a ring binder and I'm putting the instructions in pockets, back to back so I can refer to them like a book, but the story I'm putting in the back of the binder and adding each chapter as it comes in. Can't see any clues so far, can you? I have sent in my second block by email but am waiting to get the extra clue. This was a bad choice for someone who can't put a book down once she has started it, I'm having to learn patience!

I'm not going for the extra clues @toileandtrouble

I don't do Facebook or Instagram to be able to submit my finished blocks.
I know I'm able to send my blocks in an email, and I'd be able to receive the extra clues that way, but I really can't be bothered with the faff.

GOT IT! They did treble the server capacity and then had to go up to 6 times.. There must be a lot of subscribers.  Notice that Deborah has done archaeology, as my husband said, it has a lot in common with detective work.  Probably why AC went into crime fiction. That, and a lot of waiting around thinking while her husband was out digging!
I hope this doesn't get too addictive, I have quite a few little jobs coming in, besides what I want to do for myself and the family.

I stapled mine too, but not neatly like yours,  they are raggy offcuts -  I am paranoid about running out of  a colour.  Also cut out all the bits, 92? I hadn't added it up, but I started pairing up the first sets and I seem to have lost a tiny square already. Better get them stitched down quick.

I'm cutting my fabrics so, so carefully, so I don't waste anything, and I'm keeping any off-cut safe, cos you never know if it'll come in handy.
In fact, there was a little scrap of my background fabric which I'd put to one side, and I've been able to use it this month for some of the tiny squares...it pleased me so much to be able to do this.  0_0

I'm hoping I won't run out of anything either.  -<

linky (https://photos.app.goo.gl/8DYMh5KF91DCBKtm9)

There is a lorra lorra cutting involved in this one.

I omitted the 1 1/2" sq block of the green and added an extra inch to the 1 1/2" x 4 1/2" strip making them 1 1/2" x 5 1/2" rectangles instead.
It means you have to put the individual units together in a slightly different order but you dont have an extra seam in the green which upset me ....

Quite fiddly with all the tiny blocks but very rewarding to putting together the three 6 1/2" sq units  to form the block.

Doughtys came through for me this morning, with the marvellous mail order maiden that is Mickey finding as close a match to my background fabric as possible as is shown in this pic of all the blocks so far with the new fabric in the middle!!!

Post by: toileandtrouble on March 21, 2019, 21:14:49 PM
I said I didn't mind saving you from learning by your own mistakes.  Here are four more:
1.  Do not cut out when your head is full of cotton wool.
2.  If you are too tired to stand, do not cut out sitting down when you can't keep the blade close to the ruler.
3.  If the pieces do not fit any which way, check that you have not sewn the last piece on 90 degrees out.
4.  Do not try to take pictures with an empty battery.
Picture will follow, but the eagle eyed will then notice that my leaves do not have nice tidy points.  My excuse is that vegetation grows as it will. Also, Hawaii did not escape the freak weather we have been having and my creeping vines got knocked about a bit.
P.S. I don't care the total size is OK and it can go in.  (But will be more careful next time, Miss)

Someone on the FB site mentioned something about losing points and suggested cutting the small end squares  (BG1) 1 1/2" instead of 1 1/4" which I did and it worked out fine.
Someone else also suggested just cutting the middle of the three layers out so you had a straight uncut piece to sew to (when joining the blocks at the end) if your add on sq went a lil wonky ... all good advice.

Lovely, thank you, @Iminei . I've jotted it down to add it in my folder.

I meant to ask, is your DIL still sewing along with this @toileandtrouble ?

@Sandra  Yes, she is, but she has been busy this month and is just starting the March block.  Did you see Deborah's comment about the vines?  "If you like them now, just wait until  you see them in the quilt!"
Thanks @Iminei , I've sent my blocks in but haven't got the clue yet.

Well as the two Monstera leaves are the only single block, so far, my ordered (hahhahahah thats a joke) mind insists it must be at the centre of the quilt.

Yeah, Templates ... why??? Im sure theres a good reason but it really doesnt look like it couldnt be done with regular cutting ... does it ?

Ill be on it tomorrow!

Mind you the posy pattern, was templates ...

I've got it too!  I had been looking for the countdown, but then got the email.
Perhaps the  templates are there for tuition, for people who are totally new to quilting.  Important to realise that you must have it at 100%, so a good lesson there.

Hmmmm....strange. It says...*NOTE...When trimming your blocks, you may lose some or all of piece A2.

It's definitely missing on the finished block shown. So why bother with it?
Or...squidge up the other two inner 'petals' to make more room for it.  ><

Lose some or all??? That is surreal, like straining your gravy and then throwing it down the sink.
Did you just make that up Sandra?  I can't see it on my copy.  Not April !st you know!
And - I've found it. Not on the printout, on the website.  Thanks for pointing it out, although the piece seems too big to get cut away, it is reasonably wide.

These blocks clearly haven't been tested before being issued. If they were, then these little problems would have been corrected.
We had chopped off points last month and now a disappearing (possibly/maybe?) piece A2.  :(

Overall, I'm enjoying doing this. I'm happy to keep on going and I'm going to try not to over-stress about these 'errors'.
It's just a pity it wasn't polished up properly first.

So far, I love my leaf applique block best.  :)

I suspect she is allowing for someone who does not take the proper 1/4" seam allowance so that the finished piece is too big and A2 being at the edge, suffers most.  In the introduction, she said that what was really important was to be consistent.  I could foresee problems with that, but what do I know?  Still fun, as you say.  Previous years, people did end up with a proper quilt top so, hopefully, will I.

Ive been working on these all day.

I have got them done but not finished.
I have shoved the teeny piece of curved piecing into touch and inserted a triangle of BG1 onto which I will applique the heart of the flower ... YAR Boo Sucks to Teach!

They are coming out ok;
Im dubious about the 5 1/2" squaring before the green is added as it does indeed chop off most or all of the edge petal ...Why?
If you squared it to 6" you would keep that petal and you could compensate by cutting down on the BG1 square/half squares that you add to it!

GGGGRRRR ....    ....  I wish i had written this before finishing cutting the blocks ...
That is what I would've / should've  done !!
GAH! but Im not going through all that R, L and template stuff again!

Will be finished tomorrow, pics then!

I did the cutting out last night, I've organised my left and right, and have just been pinning the pieces together.

They haven't even pinned together very neatly.  -< I must make sure I'm feeling patient when I go back to them so they don't end up in the bin.
Yes. The curved seam bit looks like it's not going to go well.  :\  I'm not looking forward to trying to stitch all 12 of them.

I'm going to have to remember your advice when it comes to the trimming down to 5 1/2" bit.

BIG news @toileandtrouble @Sandra

Firstly when using the templates .. I drew a stitching line, 1/4" in from the heavy black cutting line, on the white paper template.
By lining up my ruler along its 1/4" mark on this newly drawn line I am hopefully cutting the correct distance away from the stitching line.

Otherwise, I found, as you gaily place your ruler along the black line and cut, you are inevitably cutting a shred of the template along with the fabric everytime ... when you get to the last few templates the paper template is smaller than when it began.

Clear as mud????

Now the piece that has given me, and everyone else, so much trouble is the outer petal ...  the A unit

It simply doesnt fit!

I am now recutting this unit. I will then take my blocks apart and attach the new units and hopefully square to 6"

But I am recutting A1 (the background colour in the unit ... in my case the dark blue batik) with an extra 1/4" along the side  where the writing says or cut 2 right sides together ... so under that writing ...  Im allowing an extra 1/4" of fabric.

If you havent yet cut your templates out, you could cut it with an extra 1/4" of paper and use that particular black line as the stitching line.

Then it should fit together much better ... Well we will see!

I love this thread. It's like learning ancient Greek.
So far I've got 'don't use their lines, make your own'!  0_0  0_0  0_0 That about right?   :ninja:

If it's any help, I found that shimming problem with paper templates so I made thick card ones. My blade sat along them much better if I was careful.  8)

:\  Have you ever seen such a messy shaped bit of piecing?  Good grief! I hope we don't get any more like this one.

It looked an untidy mess when I was pinning it. Nothing seemed to fit together very neatly.
After joining the first pairs of fabrics together, I trimmed to straighten the edges where they were going to have to join diagonally.
I managed, somehow, to just about get my curves to join. They're a mess, and they're 'off' when I've joined the two halves of the block together.

The good news is that I think the block will trim down fairly neatly to 6 inches. It's not a skimpy block. It has plenty of 'extra' to play with. It'll look a hell of a lot nicer than it does at the moment.

I'm determined to hang on to the outer petal, and now I've gone to the trouble and faff of making this block I don't want to chop it off.

Title: Re: Murder Mystery Quiltalongathon
Post by: Sandra on April 12, 2019, 13:10:41 PM
OK...If I cut all these blocks to 6 inches, I can't/don't know how to/CBA to re-adjust the sizes of all the other bits which needed to attach to these main blocks...while still keeping the finished block size to 12 1/2" x 18 1/2".
I'm incapable of working out mathematical stuff like that.

The quilt police might need to look away right now... :ninja:

So, what I've done is to take a larger, half-inch seam diagonally down the centre to pull the block down to the proper 5 1/2" finished size. I get to keep the outer petals  :), and all the other bits fit together as they should. It looks fine. Better than I expected it to.

I haven't looked on the Murder Mystery website but I imagine other people must be finding a problem with this block too.

See someone on the website has queried the X and Y markings.
I'm beginning to think that the measuring and geometry bit are not her strong point.  I have never done quilting before, but if I wanted to design a block like this, I would draw it inside the finished measurements, cut out the pieces, having coloured them, and then draw a seam allowance around each. What could be easier? Correct me if I have missed something, please, you experts.
Title: Re: Murder Mystery Quiltalongathon
Post by: Iminei on April 12, 2019, 20:34:50 PM
Its a typo (i hope) that they are referring to ... pieces A had Y markings and she wrote match the X'x or pieces B had X marks and she wrote match the Y's ... or Vicky versa

The more serious error was the size of Piece A1 (I think) the background fabric triangle (could be A2) which didnt fit the x or the y ... I added and extra 1/4" to one side (the side with the writing above) and hey presto, All good!

I know from the BOMs how easy it is to get a measurement wrong when typing the detructions so feel quite sorry for her ... shes got over 2000 peeps waiting for this every month.

If there over 2000 people paying every month, they should have someone to test the instructions, surely?
If the blocks had been drawn up as I said, all the pieces would fit and the side petals would not be lost.

I agree with toilandtrouble's comment...people are paying for this so you would have expected it to have been tested beforehand.

Should have mentioned yesterday that I didn't bother to re-cut the outer petals as Iminei did, and it all came together OK in the end. Those two pieces look awful trying to fit them together, but I carried on through gritted teeth and with my fingers crossed.
User error?...hmmmm...I don't think so. We'll see in the coming month just how many other people mention a problem with this months block.

Lets hope that this is as bad as it gets and we'll have no further problems.

I don't think you've missed anything @toileandtrouble. That's the solution I thought about as I read of difficulties with the design. And yes, if people are paying the block should be accurate - none of this 'we'll make it the right size afterwards'. That just discourages anyone who lacks confidence in their abilities. They think it's their fault when it's not. Fortunately the TSPers are made of sterner stuff...

Found the problem.  Template C3 is not correct. It has a right angle bottom left.  If you fold up the bottom section to divide that right angle, you get the shape shown in the next diagram. After that, the pieces go together as shown.  I checked by folding away the seam allowances and it gives a perfect match.

well done TnT but I thought the shape shown in the next diagram, of the 3 pieces together, was after squaring up ??
It certainly looks very neat and nothing like any of the pics in progress (or mine) looked like before joining the two halves together.

Anyhow mine are done (AND done again) So Im not worrying. But a lot of peeps are finding this difficult including seasoned quilters.

Thanks @Iminei, mine hasn't arrived yet, I must be a different batch!
RE the templates, Deborah said we could trim it off afterwards, but what is the point of a template that is wrong to begin with? Also, if the side is too long, it is not obvious where to join it up. If you lined up at the bottom, both edges with be wobbly and need trimming.
Did you see this comment on the website?
"Hi, Can I ask that if you are doing templates again that you highlight the number of the piece rather than the fabric choice on the piece, as I cut BG1 for one of the B pieces.
Also, can I ask that you re-read the instructions so that they are right before you post them, ie. where you mention notches and X and Y’s when they have been changed?
I am a little disappointed that this mystery quilt programme I have paid for has worse instructions than the free weekly one I have signed up for. (And I can do the math at how much you have been paid by the over 1600 people you are writing these instructions for) Thanks"

Someone is saying what we have been thinking, it seems.

Maybe we'll get a refund?!

But I do know how much time goes into a tutorial let alone a mystery quilt, before during and after release ... nightmare!

But if you put yourself up for it you should be able to do it right or take the consequences and there are many types of peeps in this ... some will curse silently and wangle their way through it, others will complain vociferously and still others will pick you up on every misspelt word and wrong destruction.

This was a complicated block to begin with and as I know explaining some processes is more complicated than actually showing it ... maybe they should have a vid ?

I do think they should have had a pic of the pieced half block BEFORE it was trimmed nice and square dont you ???

And - that comment has now been deleted from her site. It is a fair comment that the instructions should be tested before hand.  Someone did make up a sample block  but didn't flag up the problems, just bodged it up.  That sort of approach could be very disheartening for someone trying it for the first time. (Well, I am, but I'm also pigheaded and won't be beaten!)
I do think a template should be what it is supposed to be, not need cutting down afterwards.  I'll make up mine next week and show how mine went together. I tried the paper templates I had cut out and they matched perfectly square - what's wrong with that? Must admit I didn't notice the Xs and Ys transposed, just worked from X goes to X and Y to Y.

DIL came for a visit and we got to work and finished our April blocks.  I didn't like the colours I had chosen for accents because they didn't make the flower stand out enough so went with some I had used before. Hope they are in a suitable place when the pieces are put together.  Cutting out was massive, I tried to do it all in one go, with the  result that some got rushed and weren't as accurate as they should have been, making me problems further on. Still, it's done and I'm ready for the new one next week. Let's hope it is not as massive as this!

Well done TNT, very nice and you got the outer leaves to show very well,
Which method did you use to achieve that ?? Sandra's centre seam hack?

Im going to have problems as my blocks are too big ... But I'll come to that when we come to it!

It's lovely toileandtrouble...it's good to see you've got it done.

It wasn't much fun was it? I didn't enjoy this one...

The new block will be released this week. Lets hope it's much nicer to do than last months.
I'd like to start introducing some of my feature fabrics. I feel like I'm lacking a bit of blue, and two of my FF's are blue. I hope they fit in nicely.

To be honest, I didn't enjoy it much either.  If there was another big one, I would only cut out the pieces in stages, as they were needed.  Still, I feel as though I have learned something.

@Iminei  With all of your experience, you'll be absolutely fine. It's not difficult to do...it's just a different way of joining the bits together.  :)

I like this months idea of these being parts of a puzzle to make up a larger image...the other pieces to follow in the coming months. Two of these look like they fit together, but I can't see the canoe  :S  which somebody claims they can see on the MMQ site.

I picked my two blues with the yellowy green colour quite early on as my 3 main feature fabrics..loved the colours together... and now they're put together I'm not so sure of them.

Hmmmm.... -<

Anyway...they're going to have to stay. I've taken a while to decide what colour to use as the Accent fabric number 7. Felt I was missing a good green shade in my fabric selection, so have put this one in. Hope I've done the right thing.

Pieces 3 -2 and 3 - 4 obviously seem to fit together. I've no idea what it's going to be when it's all done...perhaps it will be a canoe after all?

I'm not trimming them down to the 6.5 inches, and am going to leave them just as they are until I'm able to start joining them together...just in case I could do with a tiny bit of wiggle room to get them to fit together better.

I suspect there must be another three? months worth of these.
Going by how they're numbered, I'm assuming there are four lots of these blocks, which will make up the four 12.5inch blocks which are going to be in the centre of the quilt.

Lovely colours again Iminei.

I'm here! Still toiling, still troubled, but managed to finish off the May blocks.  Had to unpick a few times, I was finding it difficult to control the angle of the pieces when they turned back, but I think I'm getting the hang of it now.  Did a very neat job on the third one and then found I had used FF2 instead of FF1.  Unpicking that really hurt!  Had to keep reminding myself to turn the fabric over when cutting out the pieces to match the front sections.  I'm keeping the ones that slope the wrong way for the later blocks,  because I have a feeling there may be some symmetry going on.
I do hope it is not going to one of those hideous masks.  Might just design my own centre piece if it is.

Post by: toileandtrouble on May 13, 2019, 10:12:36 AM
Honestly @Celia you would have been fine. I've not done it before, but you get step by step instructions with each part.  The only one causing problems was the templates. If you have done garment sewing you would probably have coped better than some, because you might be familiar with the way sloping pieces go together at the seam, for example, where princess seams meet. If you are used to matching sewing lines rather than edges, you would be OK. I'm glad to be learning one or two new techniques, but not sure if I would want to make another.  Like embroidery, there  is little call for it in my life!  This one will be to snuggle under when I'm watching my detective stories.

Deborah put it on a reply on the Facebook page.  I'm waiting to find out which are the fabrics that have to have continuity. If they join up to some blocks we did earlier, people who used scraps, as she said, will be in a bit of a mess. Still, I'm learning.  I can see how I might design my own FPP - if I ever want to make another quilt that is!

Finally but that last one, although relatively easy was a complete B*** because I kept mixing the colours up ... the small top unit was so bad I had to completely redo it and I had to change sections in at least three of the other units that went together to make the last block ... the one with, what I assume is, the flower

Finally got the June blocks done.  Never in my life have I unpicked things so many times.  Really don't know what was going on, but wherever there was a choice, I seemed to pick the wrong one.  Had to reprint the template for 6-3 because it had been redone so many times. Still made mistakes but not so many.  No real problem with the others. What was going on?  I'm looking forward to something more straightforward in July.

I've just been thinking about what colour I'll be using as 'Accent 2'...so to help me to decide, I've just laid all the blocks out on the floor...

Goodness me... 0_0  :S

I can't imagine how this will be put together when it's finished.  0_0

I definitely don't need any more hot reds/orangey colours, and I've got quite a few blues (and greens)...with more to be added in the FPP, 'puzzle' section in the coming months.

Blimey....isn't it an odd-looking thing?  -<
I'm still enjoying playing along with it...(I need to know whodunnit!)

How about a two tone fawn/brown/gold patterned piece?  They are exotic flowers after all.  I can't imagine it all put together either.
Have you noticed the post about the fire on Maui?    Dreadful, hope there are no casualties.

I went through my pile of 'maybe' fabrics to see what looked the best and have chosen a deep turquoise/teal colour. It's not too blue and not too green so it seems to sit amongst them quite well. We need half a yard of this last colour don't we?

I mustn't...I can't  :S  buy even more fabrics.

I cut out all the pieces last night, so I won't have the option to change my mind.  :)

No, I hadn't heard about a fire...I'll go and find out about it now.

@Sandra  Please swap the top boat bit (green black lime) on the right (as you look at it on screen) with the boat bit underneath it (Lime, SkyBlue, Lime, Blue ) ...

Its bugging me terribly as I can see it joining up with the top left boat bit but cant quite work it out in my head!

And the third boat bit down (on its own) looks like ut would join up with the top boat bit (that you just moved) if you turn it  once anti clockwise .. So if you dont mind ...???

Never thought of a boat @Iminei .  I'm thinking of a centre picture panel surrounded  by flowers. - and the odd Mobstera leaf of course!  Met up with a friend on Thursday and she was wearing a dress in a Monstera leaf print.
Like the teal colour @Sandra , I misunderstood, thought you wanted to avoid blues and greens.  I am sure they will all be amazing when they are done.
Get out of that oat field Iminei and back to your sewing machine. You know you want to!

@Iminei   0_0 I think there are several of the odd pieces which will join together, and after I took the picture, and packed it all away, I wished I'd photographed it with them paired up.

Maybe next time.

It looks such an odd jumble, that I'm wondering if it's not a single image being made out of all these 'puzzle' pieces...?

That's correct @toileandtrouble   :S I wanted to steer away from blues and greens, but when I saw what I'd got to work with, and what looked like it fitted in, I was back to a teal-y colour.  ><

Bloody Hell What a waste of fabric!

So I decided ... as I've been making 7 half rectangles a week for the past 6 months + ... to find an easier and more economic way of making these ... and I did!

Save your fabric ladies and please use This Method (https://photos.app.goo.gl/WUG3YAKuxmHZ5oLt5) instead of her ridiculously wasteful and tricky method.

I threw away more than I used, can that really be right?  I'm toying with another way of doing them.  By the way, I had similar thoughts about the blocks joining, but perhaps she is being really clever and trailing misleading  pieces, like a good jigsaw ??  On the other hand, her finished picture does not match the instructions, so perhaps not.  The one shown was a 'test block'.  So why not put a picture of one done the proper way?  How do you spell 'Aagh'? is that right?

Post by: Sandra on July 13, 2019, 21:43:54 PM
I knew there had to be a better way of cutting those half rectangles. It was very wasteful, and as we say here in the Black Country...it was a bit saft.  :S
Too late to cut mine using the better method. I just went with it...

A nice looking block. I really like the look of this one.  :)

This has photographed the colour quite badly...it's a darker, deeper shade than this looks.

Oh, and @toileandtrouble  I'd say AAAARRRRGGGGHHHHH!!!

Hmmmm.....I don't mind doing FPP. Really.  :)  I actually quite enjoy it, but I'd like to be able to see what I'm creating. So far, I've got all these odd blocks of ...well....I dunno.  -<
It's just messy looking, odd blocks. They currently resemble nothing much. Even the ones which definitely pair up.

I've got one more to do of these latest ones, and I'll show you.

Good luck with yours, ladies.

I've cut out these little bits to try to figure out what we're trying to create, and this is where we've got to with all the blocks we've done so far on this FPP section...?

Clearly looks like the two end sections join together...the blocks which make up Block 3, and the blocks which make up Block 6.

Just replied and hit enter instead of post -doh!  @Sandra  I was trying out the blocks like that! I tried putting the numbers on the back and the block numbers do not make any sort of pattern.   Do you think the set on the right look like a tiki? Don't know what the other half will be.  By the way, did you notice the error on 5-1? AC5 at the top should be AC7.
Someone asked if there was more FPP to come, the answer was, at least one, and at least one traditional piecing.  Do you think she is cunning enough to make two pieces with identical sides to confuse us, like a jigsaw cutter?  (although getting things done normally straight seems a bit difficult for her so perhaps not)  Anyhow, I have enjoyed learning something new and it has given me ideas for the future.

I’m watching this thread with interest (I love FPP!!). I think the middle panel will be two tiki masks overlapping/next to each other
Title: Re: Murder Mystery Quiltalongathon
Post by: toileandtrouble on August 15, 2019, 16:16:30 PM
@Iminei  A tiki is a mask.  If you read this month's chapter, you will find out about them.
Title: Re: Murder Mystery Quiltalongathon
Post by: Sandra on August 15, 2019, 16:56:39 PM
There's certainly some symmetry to whatever it is on the right...I think you could be right about it being a tiki.

OMG...another error? No. I didn't notice. I've blindly forged ahead and done whatever it is I've done. It'll only be unpicked if it screams out that it's wrong and shouldn't be there. (And even then, it'll be touch and go  :P )

So, we have another 4 months of this quilt..."at least one more FPP"...?  Hmmmmm..... ><
I make it to be another three months worth to make the rest of these FPP blocks. (Surely, because we're missing 12 of them by the look of it.)
And then a traditional pieced one?

I don't know about you, but I feel that I've still got quite a bit of fabric left at the moment.  -< Not complaining. Just a bit surprised.

As you can see Block 3 is complete,
Block 6 needs one more part,
Block 2 is completely missing,
Blocks 4 and 5 each have two more parts to come

I read that as 3 more months of paper piecing!

I predict tantrums when it comes time to putting these together!

I will trudge on to the end and then see how I can salvage it.  Certainly not going to make something with those leering faces on.  Anyhow, the whole patchwork thing was new to me so I'm glad to have tried it.  Liked doing the flowery ones and seeing how to use the fabrics. Last year's quilts looked quite different.

Yes. I'm going to trudge on too.

We've got so far and I can't just completely scrap it now. I'll make up the fugly FPP section, if only to see just how bad it really is.
Then, I'll see what I've got to work with on the remaining blocks, and if I can see them being turned into something...just anything.

I don't like my colours I've used in this section, but even if I'd used 'perfect' colour fabrics, I just don't like the design. It looks nightmare-ish.

Why not just make some more of your favourite pieced blocks from before ... We can work out the size we need.

Im really reluctant to waste anymore fabric on this, which means I might not enter into the gallery, which means we wont get the bonus clue unless one of you two do.

To be honest I have been reading the book either ... since Audible landed reading is soooo last year !!!!  :loveit:

Is next months block a pieced one again? Leaving the final two months as FPP.

Yes. That's a good idea...see what we've got and see which blocks might look good to repeat, to fill in any gaps. At the moment, to me, it just looks an incoherent muddle.

I don't think I'm too worried about not getting the bonus clue.
I'm afraid I can't get it because I'm not a Facebooker...or the other one you needed to go on to be able to get the bonus clue.

"This is another fine mess you got me into"
So sorry, girls, I'm beginning to wish I'd never mentioned it and just suffered alone.  On the other hand, it has given me some insight into quilting and colours so I have learnt something.
Had a stab at the September one last night.  The bobbin ran out at the end of a line.  Excellent, I thought, and went on to sew the next one, very neatly, without replacing the bobbin.  Put  it right, did the next, very neatly, then realised it was not BG1  but FF1. So I put that right and went to bed.
(By the way, I treated myself to a little hand roller for the seams and it works beautifully and saves lots of trips to the iron)
Looked at your layout, Sandra, and realised the mouth on the left is replaceable by the one in the centre, with the flower/heart underneath , perfect match,  so perhaps there is some cunning plan in it all!  That was why we had not to sew them together yet.
Didn't @annieeg sign up too? Wonder if she dropped out or is keeping a low profile on this!

@toileandtrouble
I did sign up in a frenzy of enthusiasm but when I got the first 'episode" I realised I was trying to punch way above my weight so I cancelled. (I paid the first month subscription only.)

No need to apologise for anything @toileandtrouble  :)
Is your d-i-l still joining in?

It was a mystery sewalong. None of us knew what we were going to be doing, but were happy to give it a go.

I don't regret joining in. It's been fun, but I don't like what this is turning into. Mainly it's this FPP design which looks vile.  :x

Apparently, there wasn't much FPP in last years quilt. Has somebody mentioned there was only the one block?
Do you think she got a bit too pleased with herself with her fpp design skills, and couldn't stop herself from using this monstrosity as her centrepiece?

You are probably right.  Perhaps we could design our own centrepieces and use FPP, applique or whatever we fancy instead?  Some of the original blocks were different sizes, so the assembly part will not be straightforward.
Did you ever play 'Consequences' at school? Do you think it might work as a quilt method, if someone starts one off, the next person design something for each side, and so on?  How complicated that could be!
I did read that they had instruction issues last time too, but they got resolved quickly. Personally, I'd like to resolve it before I published, but that's just me.

PS   Dil is plodding on too, but doesn't like the centre either. On  the other hand, some of the Americans were complaining they didn't like flowers.

Just finished the September blocks by 11.30, thought I would get them sent in before midnight. No chance. My smart (!) phone was dead, doesn't hold charge like my old one.  My husband has a code on his phone and I have forgotten it. He has a tablet with a camera but had to put in a new password when he was playing with the computer. What he has written down does not work.  Cannot find my ordinary camera.  Now it will have to be tomorrow.
The tumble dryer has stopped working and needs a new circuit board. Going off electronics.
