Embroidery Machines / PE150 needle not hitting fabric
« on: February 04, 2020, 21:48:42 PM »
I've got an old Brother PE150, that I've not used much over the years (bought it second hand from someone in the village).  It was working beautifully yesterday.

Then I got a message to check that the upper and lower thread had not been cut.  They hadn't.  But I can't get it to work.

I've cleaned everything; no real fluff or anything and I've tried running bias binding through the tension mechanism. I've changed the needle.  I've changed upper and lower thread.  I've changed the needle again .... I've tried re-hooping with different fabric.

It's really odd; it just seems as if the needle is hitting the fabric and not going any deeper.  But when I checked it without the hoop in the needle seemed to be going right down into the bobbin holder thingie.

I'm at a loss.

Help anyone?

A bit of a 'do' / Satin and velvet gown how go from draping to sewing
« on: November 16, 2018, 08:46:25 AM »
Hello,

I have been draping and tweaking this for weeks.  It is the skirt overlay for a satin dress.

My question is; having got to this stage how do I remove it from the dressform without it all falling apart.  I think i need to tack it all to a piece of gross grain ribon perhaps?

A bit of a 'do' / Hemming a silk velvet dress.
« on: October 08, 2018, 23:38:31 PM »
This has been in my "too difficult" ufo pile for ages because i can't get a decent hem on it.

It is above knee height at one side  going to ankle length at the other and so has all sorts of odd grain lines plus a sharp corner at the longest side.

What hints can you give me for getting a decent looking hem?

A bit of a 'do' / Six metres of turquoise silk and err black chain?
« on: March 10, 2018, 20:28:00 PM »
I have six metres od turquoise silk in two shades - three metres of each. It is beautiful, soft and flowing

I bought it on India 10 years ago.

I want to make an evening dress out of it to wear on a p&o cruise at christmas.

But I am stumped.  I can find lots of beautiful patterns and dresses I could base something on.  But they are all so tame - I have toned down enormously but i am not quite ready fir elegant sophistication.

So needs suggestions.  It can be long or short.  I don't want to go strapless and I don't want anything too historic looking, but no other rules except that the other evening dresses I shall be wearing have lace and silver dimante respectively so would like to avoid them.

I was thinking of adding metres of black chain or plether sleeces or something.

Please save me from being elegant.

In the wardrobe / Skirt that is really a dress
« on: January 13, 2018, 11:19:52 AM »
Or perhaps a dress that looks like a skirt.

I want to have a couple of skirts for summer wear but I can't wear skirts as they give me back-ache.

Howevery couture sewing book illustrates severall "skirts" that are really dresses - the skirt is sewn on to light weight top that isn't designed to be seen.

However, as this is for summer I need the tip to be as cool as possible and am not sure what fabric to use.  Culproall? One of the performance fabrics? Or just a cotton?

I am sure someone must have done this before.  Can you give me some ideas?

In the wardrobe / Butterwick 5951 ufo complete
« on: November 04, 2017, 17:07:14 PM »
This one really needs a.lot body in it to show it off.

End of roll silk fabric  bought 18 monthe ago  black baclkground with pink and turquoise in the slub.  Cut out almost immediately.  Need to finish it because the fabric cost £25 and I had the belt made too.

I completely messed up the back and collar and somehow managed to put the zip in the wrong place. Gave up about 17 months ago.

Took the zip out and put it in the right place which meant I wasn't strangling myself and could move my arms.

Am pleased with this one (so will get a proper photo) but again not sure when I will wear it as it's  a bit smart for work but a bit formal on style for a party frock.

But it's done!

In the wardrobe / 3 year ufo finished chanel style jacket and linton tweed
« on: November 04, 2017, 11:33:35 AM »
It's done.   Other well-done by any means but wearable.

Based on vogue 8075 and using linton tweed on ivory with silver thread - not the yellow phone wants to picture it in

I have no idea what possessed me to think this was a good idea or why I thought I wanted an ivory jacket.   I have no idea when I am going to wear it and I certainly won't be wearing it often as it's going to pick up every piece of dirt and I  not convinced that I have done enough to stop it fraying inside.

Bit it's Done.
