Sewing Spaces and Furniture / Ikea Skarsta table anyone?
« on: February 10, 2021, 10:59:07 AM »
When our loft conversion is finished I am planning to sew up there.  The room will have to also function as a guest bedroom but I should be able to fit in a large (160x80) Ikea Skarsta table.  It`s the one that you adjust the height manually.
I will need it both for cutting out and sewing on and I`m wondering how stable it is?
I would also want to pull it away from the wall when cutting out.  Husband reckons it would be easy to fix casters.  Any thoughts?

Technical Help / Best/easiest way to sew buttons onto press studs?
« on: January 26, 2021, 10:47:44 AM »
I`m making a top for my grandson which has a placket opening.  I don`t want to put buttons on as my machine isn`t reliable with jersey buttonholes and I don`t have  Kam snaps so I was going to sew some small  plastic press studs on and want to disguise them with a small button on top.
I`ve got in a muddle doing this before as iit s tricky to sew the button in place once the press stud has been sewn on and vice versa

Any tips please!

Patterns Discussion / Problem with Ellie & Mac pdf
« on: January 24, 2021, 12:37:07 PM »
I am going to make this

It claims to be trimless and that every page should touch the corresponding page against a dotted line.   This is working where each side edge joins, but at the top of each sheet there is a blank space of about 1cm which I am going to have to trim off to allow it to join the sheet above in the right place.
I`ve read the instructions for printing several times and am pretty sure I have done  it correctly.

It`s not a huge problem as it is only a child`s top with not too many pieces but I`d be interested to know if I am doing something wrong or if there is a fault with the pattern itself

Tutorials / Binding a jersey V neck tutorial
« on: January 22, 2021, 15:56:18 PM »
I have just made my grandson the DIBY free T-shirt pattern which was good except that the round neckline was too tight to get over his head comfortably.  One solution seemed to be to make it into a v-neck so I took off the existing binding, cut the V and then followed this tutorial.  It was easy to follow and has turned out well.  I`d definitely use it again when altering necklines for myself

Tech Know How / Not allowed to attach a photo

I`ve just tried to attach a photo of our Christmas tree and got a message saying this is a subscriber only feature - I`m pretty sure I am a subscriber and haven`t had problems attaching photos before

Technical Help / neckband - cut on bias or not?
« on: December 07, 2020, 16:05:50 PM »
Back in  September 2018 I asked for advice about finishing a stretchy neckline in Jersey - and Francesca posted a very useful reply which tells me to cut a strip  2inches wide long enough to go round the neckline plus a bit.  I printed this off but the original seems to have vanished from the forum.  My notes don't say if the strip should be cut on the straight or bias, but the instructions do tell me to stretch it a bit as I pin it to the neckline
What should I do?  The top I am making has a round slightly scooped neckline and the fabric is a fairly stable cotton jersey

House Beautiful / Christmas tree "skirt"
« on: November 29, 2020, 16:44:52 PM »
I have bought some red crushed velvet (eBay) to make a cover for the stand of our artificial tree. The idea is to cut a circle with a slit in it - possibly held together with Velcro. I thought I would finish the outer and inner edge with bias binding but I'm not sure how successful that would be. But I don't fancy hemming a circle of crushed velvet!
Any ideas? (I don't have an overlocker)

Tutorials / Pattern matching video

I found this tutorial useful - it`s still a bit fiddly but it has worked well for me.  It`s primarily for matching curtain fabric

Fun with Fabric / Searching for this out of stock fabric

I really really like this but it`s out of stock and I can`t find it anywhere else.  Can anyone track it down?

Technical Help / neck band problem
« on: October 15, 2020, 18:49:46 PM »
I`ve started making the Sinclair Sandy tunic and all was going well until I put the neckband on (only basted so far thank goodness).  I`m making the scoop neckline and have cut the correct band for that but it`s too big.  There are some rather random notches - one of which doesn`t seem to match to anything.  The back is ok but the front is baggy.  I`ve tried repositioning it to distribute the band more evenly but can`t do it successfully

I don`t know how to cut another band that will fit properly - or how to place that without any notches to guide me.  Can any of you better skilled ladies help?
Failing that I will make a neck facing (I know where I am with them)

Patterns Discussion / Assembling pdf patterns
« on: October 08, 2020, 15:55:47 PM »
I`ve printed off my Sinclair Sandy tunic but could do with a bit of help assembling the pages.  I`ve only used one other pdf pattern and did find it hard lining up the pages accurately and keeping the whole pattern  "square".  The two options seem to be glue sticks or sticky tape but I found both of those tricky if I needed to reposition a page.

Any advice/tips would be appreciated

Fun with Fabric / I need Jersey for a toile
« on: October 04, 2020, 14:23:17 PM »
I`m going to make a tunic from this

I haven`t used the pattern before and need to make a toile - hopefully wearable but don`t want to spend much incase it is a disaster.  Any ideas for suppliers?  I`ve had very cheap jersey from Ebay before but it`s more lightweight and stretchy than my final fabric.  I`m hoping to get it out of 2 metres

has anyone made this:  ?

I like the look of it but would make with a scoop neckline rather than a ginormous cowl

Technical Help / How to pattern match perfectly?
« on: September 19, 2020, 15:52:33 PM »
Strictly speaking this shouldn`t be in the Wardrobe section as it concerns curtain fabric but presumably it is the same technique.
I need to pattern match 2 pieces of curtain fabric so I can use them to cover a flat headboard - there will be a vertical join which will be in the centre of the headboard.  I`ve now made 3 pairs of curtains with this fabric - each curtain being 2 widths so I`ve already done a fair amount of pattern matching - but although it is fine for a gathered curtain it wouldn`t be good enough for the headboard (I want the join to be as invisible as possible).

Any advice would be much appreciated. I can`t work out how to exactly line up the design and then stitch in the right place

This is the fabric
