I`ve found a blog "The Compulsive Seamstress" by a lady Anne W who runs classes near Stratford upon Avon - which would be perfect for me.

Just wondered if anyone had heard of her and could tell me more

The Haberdashery / Carbon paper and tracing wheel
« on: May 02, 2017, 20:01:27 PM »
I`m about to make a dress which has a number of pleats across the bodice.  I need a good way of marking the pleats and thought I would try some dressmaker`s carbon and a tracing wheel. (Haven`t used it before)
Looking on Amazon the best seems to be Burda dressmaking carbon and the Clover Tracing Wheel.

Any thoughts on these?  Or any other ideas for marking the pleats?  If I don`t use this I think I would mark the start and finish of each placement line with a washable pen and draw in the line with a ruler (is that making sense?)

Thanks

Patterns Discussion / Anyone used Cashmerette patterns?
« on: May 02, 2017, 08:18:27 AM »
My lovely daugher is very much a plus-sized young woman and consequently hates buying clothes .  I`d love to make her something and have been looking at the Cashmerette dresses.  Has anyone made any of these?  Is there anything I should be aware of?

Also, I am a PDF pattern virgin  - am I going to find them a challenge? (I see that Cashmerette do printed patterns but they are more money)

Patterns Discussion / Looking for a Simplicity sale

I`ve got my eye on a particular Simplicity pattern but I`m not in a rush to get it.  Do any of the suppliers have regular sales?

Patterns Discussion / Storing Patterns
« on: April 15, 2017, 11:53:46 AM »
How does anyone else store patterns?

They never ever go back in the envelope.  In fact, once you have unfolded them it is impossible to fold them up again! And storing bits of cut pattern is even worse.
At the moment I`m putting them in A4 envelopes with a vague description written on them.
It doesn`t help that I haven`t got a proper sewing space at the moment so the envelopes are then shoved in a chest of drawers in no particular order

Organise me please!

Access All Accessories / "Cotton Filler Cord" or flexible tube
« on: April 14, 2017, 11:41:52 AM »
Help Please!

I`m going to make a bag (Kwik Sew 142) which has piped handles.  The pattern calls for 1/2 inch cotton filler cord - which I can`t find.  Lisa Lam (U-handbag) uses flexible plastic tubing which seems a bit expensive to me.  I`d have to buy 2 meters and even ordinary plastic tubing on ebay is going to be more than £5

Any ideas?

Patterns Discussion / Butterick`s tattooed lady!
« on: April 13, 2017, 19:45:56 PM »
Please can someone tell me why so many of Butterick`s dress patterns are modelled by a lady festooned with tattoos?

I know I`m very ancient - and both of my children  do have tattoos (which I hate) - but I do find them distracting - and they certainly don`t encourage me to buy the pattern

Access All Accessories / Bag - stabilizer or fleece - help!
« on: April 04, 2017, 19:15:43 PM »
I`m planning to make a bag from  "KwikSew 142" pattern

I want to make the purple version.

I like the pattern but the only stiffening is a layer of  interfacing.  When I`ve made bags before I`ve used interfacing and fusible fleece (from U-handbag).  I think it will be too floppy with just interfacing so I was going to add a layer of fusible fleece but I`m now wondering if the Ultra Firm Stabilizer sold by U-handbag would give a better result - I`ve never used it before.

Any ideas please - all help much appreciated.

In the wardrobe / Style advice needed please
« on: March 21, 2017, 08:15:22 AM »
I`ve been invited to a very posh evening party in June - dress code "Summer frocks or party wear". I`m 60, 5ft 6ins  and about a size 16 (dress pattern size) with not much of a bust and no defined  waist (plus a tummy). What style to go for?
Oh - I`m not keen on the tops of my arms (bingo wings) and I`d quite like it to be long (so I don`t have to fake tan my legs).
In my stash I`ve got some gorgeous poplin weight cotton sateen - with a sort of abstract very large flower design (looks better than it sounds) which I would like to use

Any ideas what style I should go for?  If you can actually recommend a pattern that would be brilliant

(The party giver`s business is wealth management in London and I don`t want to feel like a country bumpkin!)
