Title: Back to university
Post by: Manuela on June 19, 2017, 11:41:39 AM
I just got an offer from The University of Sunderland for their international PGCE course, starting in September - utterly over the moon about it  :D
It'll be a hard year, but this is something I always wanted to do. I chose secondary Design & Technology (specialising in Textiles, obviously )
At the ripe age of 55, quite a task - but this is something I really wanted  :toast:
My school fully supports me, and my boss is going to be my mentor.

Good for you, Manuela. By international PGCE I take it that you will do it by distance learning (given where Sunderland is in relation to HK!)

Indeed it is, my teaching practice sessions will be recorded, Sunderland also has evaluators in Hong Kong. The school I'm working in has long standing connections with the university and supported me all the way. Given that I'm a native German speaker, I had to jump through quite some hoops (IELTS exam, getting all my academic credentials translated and verified, etc.) just to get the application done.

No it isn't, I just spotted (and corrected) a typo in my post  ;)
Mr Manuela is a Brit, hence I rarely speak German, and when I do I sound like a leftover from the 80s

Thank you everybody, I am still giddy. When Mr Manuela came home from work, he found me laughing and crying at the same time. When he asked me if I'd like a new MacBook for the course (mine is from 2010 and is mostly used for downloading, streaming and watching TV), I sobbed 'Yes, a pink one please"  :D
Just that you know how much this means to me, I wanted to become a teacher ever since I was a teenager. However, growing up in East Germany, this door was closed right in front of me for political reasons (my brother tried to leave, and was caught and imprisoned). So I became a tailor, worked and studied hard to become a master tailor and then worked for 20+ years in the fashion industry. After leaving the 'rag trade' (as it is called here) I did a BA in Putonghua (Mandarin Chinese), graduated in 2014. Initially I wanted to become a language teacher (the only possible PGCE in Hong Kong), until the school I work for convinced me to apply at Sunderland and do what I love.  :D

Manuela that's fabulous. Every day I love my job because for all my working life I've been doing exactly what I've always wanted to do.
It's so sad that not everyone had the same opportunities and it's easy to forget how lucky we are.
I wish you every happiness and success in your new adventure.
Studying when you're "over 21" is very different. I went back at 35 and loved it because I was doing it for me and not because it was expected of me.
Well done!  :toast:

Here's yet more Congratulations from Northern Ireland.

Well done girl.....I was 'forced' into commercial subjects at High School as I was academically zilch...truly.....all I ever wanted to do was Art in some form or other.  When I progressed to the Technical College the Art teacher was a brilliant (in my eyes anyway) calligrapher and he used to design and write posters which I used to stand and admire in shop window....and there was I, in the same building, but no one took any notice...in those days you did what you were told.

Sorry, I only told all the above to be very glad for you, even at 55 (to me that's young!) that you are now having the opportunity to follow your dream.

Every success in your future endeavours.

Thank you everybody for the kind wishes.

Elephun, after the absolutely rotten year 2016 was for me, this year has so far been wonderful. Got over last year's illness, new job, our place in Thailand, etc.
Can you imagine, I even get paid to go scuba diving in the Philippines in November  :D I couldn't believe it when the trip leader chose me to accompany the group when a lot more students than expected signed up for it. It probably helps that I'm a qualified rescue diver, but with me being new and all   :D

Congratulations! I also did PGCE whilst working as a teacher. It's hard work but worthwhile and wonderful that you can fulfil your teenage dream at last.
