I couldn't have put it better than @Ellabella - we all need a bit of excitement at the moment, and this is quite a modest way of getting some!!

Sewing Machines / Re: need help selecting a sewing machine for wife

Like @SewRuthieSews I did a lot of sewing on an inexpensive Toyota before I had a fancy (and the money) for something posher.  It was absolutely fine - maybe a bit noisier than one of the bigger brands, but gave a great introduction to sewing and made some good garments and even quilts.

If I was buying a first sewing machine for someone starting out I would probably look at the John Lewis website, as someone else suggested.  I would assume they were going to be helpful if anything did go wrong!

I have a piece of pink and white striped jersey that is destined to become a rugby shirt.  I have about 6 other things that need to be done first, but who knows?  I may retrieve my mojo from wherever it's hiding.  (I hope to goodness it isn't in the field shelter with the quilt police...  :scream: )

Me, me @Bodge, I've got one!  It's a Huskystar ER10 and it's fairly new to me, so I haven't had enough time to really explore it.  I have plans to felt a design onto a canvas tote bag, and possibly onto a denim jacket.  I haven't done anything worth photographing yet but I have experimented with felting onto fabric inside the lines of a drawn on design.

Somewhere I have a felted pcture I made by hand years ago, which I would like to felt to death with the machine to see if it improves!

@Sara-S It's basically a machine with a group of needles that felts, or attaches other fibres to fabric.

The size is OK - it's 1,080px wide which is only a little larger than can be displayed.  900px is ideally the maximum, but I'm certainly not bothered about a few extra pixels!

I could transfer @BrendaP 's post from the Today thread, but the software will put it at the beginning of the thread because of the time it was posted, so here it is quoted:

It depends on how smooth you want the circles to be.
  [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

If you make a long strip of red and white stripes and then use a wedge ruler;
9 degrees for 40 wedges or 10 degrees for 36 wedges and you make the wedges fairly big (full length of the ruler?) the angles will be barely discernable.  The star in the middle would be doable by piecing or by applique.  Joining the circles to the centre will be the hardest bit to do other than by 'applique'.  Probably the easiest  way would be to make the middle with a good amount of seam allowance and then place the finished circle over it and either turn the edge of each wedge and topstitch or just satin stitch right around the whole lot.

The Megaquilter doesn't have the foot operated thread cutter, and as far as I can see there isn't a socket so that you can add one (although I'd be delighted to be proved wrong!)  I think the Janome has the socket so that one can be added, and the Juki clearly comes with it as standard.  Not enough to explain the price, but maybe there are other things like that...  :thinking:

That looks like the Juki version of the Husqvarna Megaquilter and the Janome 1600P.  And the Janome is still available new (although discontinued, I believe), and costs £899...

It's a fantastic machine, but that price is seriously odd!  My Megaquilter (second hand but absolutely excellent condition) cost around £200 earlier this year.

The listing says that it's a non-Singer plastic base - I wonder where that came from?!?  I do like the colour of it though.
