Sewing Machines / Re: New year.... new sewing machine

One bit of advice - when you've done some and you don't think it's very good, leave it for at least a day and then take a look.  What you think are glaring faults when you're doing it may actually have disappeared overnight!   :meditation:

Amazing!  That's a tricky garment beautifully made!

Ooh - that looks good.  I wonder how it differs from greaseproof paper.

Patchwork & Quilting ... Welcome to the Darkside / Re: Fabric habits

I've never used Best Press, but I do have a recipe for Vodka and Lavender Starch, which I intend to try out any day now.  That way I can always take a swig of it if things go wrong.

I did have to put in an email address, and immediately got an email from the National Quilters Circle saying I'd been added to their newsletter list, but there is an unsubscribe link.  The templates are from the National Quilters Circle, via Craftsy.

There are lots of very nice free quilt block templates and measurements available here from Craftsy.  There are some other colouring in pages too which probably make good templates for various things (I haven't downloaded those, so I don't know for sure.)

I'm not sure whether they are available to non-Craftsy members, but I don't think I had to log into my account to access them.

I really, really love that - and I'm absolutely with you both ( @Aunty Stitches and @BrendaP ) on needing to have a good quality finish.

Now I'm wondering whether I have enough time to try and fit in another set of projects...

Ooh - insulating tape maybe - I have plenty of that.

Patchwork & Quilting ... Welcome to the Darkside / Re: Scant Seams

I was just explaining the problem to him, and he mumbled something about putting something on the inside of the edge guide to make it thicker.  If I could think what to use I would give it a go.

No, Stanley (on the right) just wandered in one day and stayed, and Charlie was Mr Acorn's from childhood (which is why he's so much scruffier!)  I think Little Ted may be their triplet.

Charlie and Stanley would like to say hello to Little Ted.

Patchwork & Quilting ... Welcome to the Darkside / Scant Seams
« on: January 19, 2021, 17:09:32 PM »
I know that the way to make a 1/4 inch scant seam is to use a 1/4 inch foot and move the needle one step to the right.  However, on my Megaquilter - which I much prefer to use for piecing - the needle doesn't move.

Is there a secret for doing scant seams when you can't move your needle?  And why don't they just make 'scant 1/4 inch' feet???   :boohoo:

Am I going to have to use my Husqvarna just because I can move its needle?  I have just given in and ordered it a 1/4 inch foot with a guide (its current 1/4 inch foot doesn't have one), so I suppose I'm probably resigned to it.

Patchwork & Quilting ... Welcome to the Darkside / Re: Fabric habits

I prewash if I think there is a chance of shrinkage or colour run, which means I rarely do so for patchwork.

I press everything.  Seams open or to one side for garments, and seams to the side and generally flattening and straightening everything for patchwork.  I don't think it's a good idea to press seams open for patchwork because the seam will be weaker.

Apart from anything else, it always looks so much better well pressed.
