I dont know about you but my big bed quilts are only used on extremely cold nights ... and how many of those do we get in DDD ??? Having said that, the way this year is turning out, this winter will be the next ice age!!!) whereas a good sized lap quilt will get used every evening during the Autumn, Winter and early Spring !

You could always make that giant king size quilt as two twin sized and then join in the center. It'll require some hand stitching to join the two halves but that way you only have to deal with a twin size on the machine when doing the quilting.
