I remember on a handcrank Singer stopping stitching with needle down, presser foot up, turn fabric around, presser foot down and stitching a couple of stitches!

Now that you mention it I'm pretty sure that's what I had to do on my first three Kenmore machines.  I'd completely forgotten about that "technique"

I suppose that was the only way then @mudcat! The machine was the one I learned to sew on at home and which had originally belonged to my great grandmother. My introduction was to 'help' by turning the handle probably aged around 6 or 7 at the time.

After zillions of years sewing I don't think I've come across a lockstitch. I'll have to check my machine. This means I always use a quick reverse stitch...... seeing as wot I didn't know any different up to now.  : :|

I believe *all* the newer computerized machines have  a lockstitch built in.
