Wonderful! I loved making dresses like this and miss it a lot.  What a wonderful result you have there!  Many jealous ladies at the party I am sure!
As it neared the top of the grade, it went more slowly. However, it still kept saying, "I—think—I—can, I—think—I—can." It reached the top by drawing on bravery and then went on down the grade, congratulating itself by saying, "I thought I could,  I thought I could."

What a fabulous dress @elisep !  Such a lot of work but so worthwhile.  I find hand sewing like that quite therapeutic.  And it’s really the only way to do it.  Years ago I went to the Valentino exhibition at Somerset House.  They had films playing of people working on gowns and samples of various techniques.  This reminds me of that.

That is absolutely stunning. Well done.

Just for future reference, I don't know if you've done this or not, but when making a boned dress that has a zip closure, you should always do an inner laced closure as well.  It is this that takes the strain of the dress and takes the strain off the zip so it doesn't buckle and burst.  The zip is therefore there, literally to close the dress.

Thanks for the advice, Missie! There will definitely be lots of dramatic gowns in my future so I’ll remember for next time!
I considered doing a lace up closure for the outside of the dress but decided against it. I hadn’t realised that only having the zipper would put so much strain on it!
In future for any similar dresses I think I’ll stick with a separate internal corselette instead of just a boned internal layer.
