Thats not too bad @Bill!
I run a workshop entitled 'get to know your sewing machine' and the ones that come in are usually worse than that! Everyone has to clean and oil their machines before they start, and I give a new packet of needles to the one with the most fluff and grot!
I have learnt by my mistakes: Sewing machines now are Bernina 720, Bernina 1008, Bernina 801 from 1981, Brother overlocker, ancient but works well

It boggles the mind!

Surely there shouldn't be grease in here?

If it's that bad in there, have you looked underneath yet??

There should be grease in some of there (ie the hinged bits) but definitely not in all of there!

Ah yes. It's spotless there. Inside the arm is clean too. Thankfully  :faints:

All of the mechanisms that move against each other require oil in these machines.  Your manual will indicate those points.
The grease will just be a build up of the oil, dust and lint that have accumulated over the years.  I carefully used isopropyl alcohol and cotton buds for cleaning the grease out of the mechanisms on my vintage Singers.

It was actual grease @coffeeandcake  I wiped a blob on my finger to be sure. Squeaky? clean grease.
Anyhoo, lacking some other more specialist cleaners......I blasted some brake disc cleaner in there along with some aerosol oil and got it clean. It's not perfect but it'll do for now. It's just ingrained muck for now but I'll get that done properly soon.
The stuff that came out of there though...I could stuff a teddy bear with it!
There's a blob of sewing machine oil in there now.
