My Janome 230dc absolutely hated it!

I've used a Coats Eloflex (which is a stretch thread and looks identical) and my Janome hated it too, not the same machine as yours @The Shrinking Sewist though. I went back to doing a very slight zig zag on parts that needed it.

I never ever use the 'lightning stitch' as to be honest I've never thought a garment was likely to split. If worried I'd just do a double row.

For anything that isn't super stretchy I find that a straight stitch has plenty of give. I just knock the tension down a bit to be on the safe side and make sure I hold it taut without stretching it out as I sew.
