A Good Yarn / Re: Use by dates on yarn
« on: November 30, 2018, 23:40:35 PM »
I dont know EU laws, but US requires such dates on nearly everything.  It makes yiu wonder though,  What happens to sour cream after the “useby” date?  Does it become sweet cream again?

Sewing Machines / Re: Useless functions

...Why do they "improve" functions that don't need improving? ..
I so totaly agree. It is not an Improvement when I have to hunt for a function I use frequent or I must adjust parameters that were perfect before.  IMO it is arrogant. How is it that a new whiz kid’s opinion is more important than my working habits or experence?

Sewing Machines / Re: Walking Foot
« on: November 17, 2018, 00:12:08 AM »
I rarely use mine and I have 2 types which came with my Brother Dream.  I prefer to just slip feet on and off the machine because I use a number of them.  To me, it is like using the right screw driver. Sure several different screw drivers will probably get the job done for you, but the one which fits the screw head and can easily get into the work area, makes the job faster, easier; not a hated chore to be avoided but a quick adjustment.  Anyway, my walking feet require more effort to put them on and off so I dont do it until they are really needed.

Patterns Discussion / Re: 1940s style
« on: October 01, 2018, 00:02:27 AM »
I am going to a quiz evening next Saturday with a war time theme.  I was thinking of making a 1940s style dress to wear, but I am struggling to find a pattern or a starting point to draft one from.  Also, not really sure what kind of fabric to use, I am not massively bothered about it being authentic, just needs to look the part.  any ideas?????
what an interesting project.  I hope you share pics when it is finished.

I'm going to have a stab at making the Jalie Elenore pull on jeans which stipulates either denim or twill with 20% stretch across the grain.
Any idea where I can get this ?
(Any sites I've look don't seem to manage a search using the words 20% stretch....)
TIA
Annieg
Thats a continual problem for me too in the US.  I look for Lycra which I think is elastine on your side of the pond? For Jalie patterns I test the old fashioned way, take 10” and stretch as far as possible.(Sorry, not sure wat that is in metric). It must stretch at least 2” which is 20% of 10”.  Jalie is serious about stretch.  Dont try a fabric with out the required stretch. It will not work. Ask me how I know.

Fun with Fabric / Re: paraffin smell on fabric
« on: September 02, 2018, 20:13:05 PM »
I bought some laces a few months ago with a smell I couldnt get rid of. Not the same smell as you are experiencing but I offer my experience because the Freezer Treatment usually works. I put the laces in a plastic bag with a lavender scented dryer sheet. Sealed the bag, threw it in the freezer and forgot it.  When I found it 2 months later, no smell.

In the wardrobe / Re: FBA again.

Oh good grief. My fitting buddy is a "boob man". This may take a while.  :o ..
Sounds familiar especially if you add “everything I suggest sounds like foreplay to him.”   :D love him, but yeah asking for his help  definitely  expands the amount of time needed to complete my project.

There is a time for sewing and a time for sitting in the easy chair in front of the A/C.  Think now is the time for the later.

Lovely top.

Sorry, what is a LDT?

(I'm going to feel inadequate anyway - as the women colleagues I'll be meeting with are much younger, taller, slimmer, expensively dressed!)
Any suggestions gratefully received.
 :D :woof:

Go with our support and blessings. No need to feel inadequate. Just realize you have different skills and talents to add.

Dress classically. Add flair wth an accent of  color. I aways like a pretty blouse. Other women I have known used a scarf or other acccessory.  Make it yours and realize if you were not worthy, you would not be there.

@Silver Rose: Vogue patterns include a label in the envelope.  I made this

I sewed the label to the waistband.
oh so pretty.

Patterns Discussion / Re: Ottobre 5/2018
« on: August 12, 2018, 01:38:00 AM »
I like #8. Am thinking this is my 2018 Anniversary dress :toast:. But it will be cold in December.  Wondering if I should add length or buy warm tights.

Agree with the post re Otto looks a bit boring and plain but are Oh So Wearable. I make an Otto and wear it until it is in shreds. Well worth my time and effort.

Overlockers & Coverstitchers / Re: Help inserting needles
« on: August 06, 2018, 02:59:24 AM »
I have a dental mirror. Its a little round mirror on the end of a 5-6” handle.  I maneuver it  in and around so I can see the holes where the needles should be inserted.  I use a tweezer to hold the needles which is great for me.
