They're both great, very creative. Difficult to choose.

Patchwork & Quilting ... Welcome to the Darkside / Re: Jabaru wall hanging.

That's fab!

Oooh, looking forward to seeing how this stitches out.

1054
@Kittensposies ah, yes, a bit of a long drive. I know nothing about the Britannia machine. I bought mine after searching reviews but now find a lot of people saying the Janome skips stitches. I didn't see those beforehand

@Kittensposies do you have a nearby stockist where you could try the machines? Do you live near enough to anyone on TSP who would let you try theirs? You're welcome to come & try mine if you're anywhere near. I'm in RG5, near Wokingham, not far from the M4 if that helps?

I'm also rubbish at spending on myself - years of putting others first maybe?

@Kittensposies that's a good price. If I remember correctly I paid about that from SMD in 2017. I'm not sure how good JL would be at fixing any problems, but they're usually very good about replacing faulty items. I strongly recommend buying the clear foot, it will make your learning curve easier. I bought mine a couple of months ago as didn't know it existed until I joined the Janome coverstitch group on Facebook.

I've had the Janome 2000 for a couple of years, haven't used it a mega amount but wouldn't be without now. It seems many owners need to raise the rear feed dogs to improve the stitch but mine seems ok. I had one project that it wouldn't sew but tried @Fabric Lover's machine (a Brother) and hers didn't like the fabric either. I think the key is to keep going - slowly if necessary - as my looper thread often breaks if I stop & start. If buying again I'd get the Brother (don't know the model of @Fabric Lover's but it's a Brother) as I like the presser foot raise lever on the right like on the overlocker. I also bought the clear foot, IMO it should be supplied with the machine as it's do much easier than the solid foot.

Lovely design, I looked at that this morning but decided I don't have anywhere to use it. I've tried a variety of stabilisers but find the best is Janome iron on, tear off. For a dense design like this I'd use 2 layers. I've bought cheap stabilisers but they're not as good as the branded Janome. I buy a roll of the width that fits my biggest hoop. When I end up with biggish bits left over I stitch them together with bobbinfill, the resulting composite works ok for light stitched designs or for small designs that can be stitched without going over the 2 layer joins. (Sometimes embroidery works ok over the joins, sometimes not - so I don't use for anything important)

I bought a large, shallow plastic box with lid, I think it's intended as underbed storage. My embroidery module lives in there under the desk, along with hoops & roll of stabiliser.

Excellent idea @Sheilago. I'll do that when I've used up the wrapping paper stash. I'm not buying any more but I'm not wasting what I've already got.

Have you told it what size hoop you're using? My Pfaff defaults to the small hoop unless the design is very large, I have to select hoop size from a drop down.

That's lovely. I could be persuaded towards the Darkside by that.

Thanks @Sonatine you've explained it well, and the photo helps a lot. I can see why the habit is used, it does look more elegant. I had wondered whether a whip was used in lieu of the right leg. You must have very good balance.

@Sonatine that's interesting. I'm guessing you can't use any leg pressure to control the horse. I believe side saddle was very common in previous centuries so it can't be all that difficult for animal or human. (I don't mean that in a disparaging way: I never learnt to ride but one of my daughters was very keen for a while) perhaps it evolved to suit petite ladies on large horses. Off to Google that theory!

That's fabulous. Congratulations on a well deserved win. You look so elegant. Riding side saddle must feel very different to astride - did it take long to get used to it? And does the horse not mind the change in weight loading?
