Well, I was sitting here cogitating in the early hours and the conclusion is- I am not a mathematical genius! tried every way I could think of How work out a formula for the increased sizes. Needs a better brain than I have. :(

Pattern paper was available in seven sizes: 10,12,14,16,18,20,22. = Bust Size in cms 83, 87 , 92, 97, 102. 107, 110.

Increase in from 83cms is +4 cms (4.85%), +5cms (5.7%), +5cms (5.4%), +5cms (5.15%), +5cms (4.9%), +3cms (???) Then I got lost and went to bed and had a nightmare where Stephen Hawkings appeared and called me stupid which I agreed. :|

Size 10 Bust 83cms appears to be the pattern paper I have i.e 1cm +small sq.

Just to confuse me further I later found on page 10 of Adapting to Fashion reference to size 8 (Bust size 80cms)pattern!

I don't know if any of this has helped or hindered you @Addiscomber

I have a fair bit of Betty Foster's 'stuff' here. I've never used it but if it helps I have her master pattern and I have sheets other MetricDressmaking Paper.. The squares on that paper are 1cm sq larger marking is 4cms sq.
The books are Betty Foster's Dressmaking  Book( ThamesTelevision and Betty Foster's Adapting to Fashion.
Happy to look up what I can for you if I know where to find it.

The Haberdashery / Re: Which scissors

I have a pair go KAI N5230 which I purchased about 10 years ago. They were actually marketed under the Janome name and label, have lilac handles and have the KAI N5230 clearly marked on the angled part of the blade and KNIFE EDGE on the lower blade itself, fabulous scissors and I wouldn't have realised they were KAI without reading this thread. Have looked current Janome scissors and they are definitely not the same.

Fun with Fabric / Re: Preserving Silk
« on: December 12, 2018, 12:32:18 PM »
I don't think the plastic bag will have done the silk any favours and the damage is unlikely to be repaired or removed. However to preserve it in the condition it is, wrap gently but securely with acid free tissue paper, folding the paper between the the garment  (using many sheets to achieve this and the store in a cardboard box in a damp proof place away from sunlight.
If anyone knows a better way I'm happy to learn.

Apologies for this long post.

@Mamashep  I understand so well how devastated you must be feeling. At my regular eyetest in Oct 2017  the optic said,I had bilateral cataracts developing. Never having been blessed with good eyesight a new prescription affords me with what was at the time  eyesight which was normal to me, having worn variafocals lenses for too many years to remember so I was happy that I could 'continue'. One of my RA meds can cause visual problems but I was assured that aspect was fine. Forward 6 months and I felt my sight had deteriorated, particularly for driving and my night vision plus  when awakening I felt I had to 'peel' my eyelids open! I could still read and daily life was OK though hadn't done any sewing for years due to the RA.

So, urgent appointment with optician who said dry eye syndrome,- eyedrops will sort that, but your eyesight is "not legal to drive'. I live alone and the RA limited my driving but I had better days so I worked around them for appointments, etc. and when really bad I do have family who are supportive but they do work full time. But this was like a punch in the face and I reeled mentally, my freedom and independence gone.

I was quoted approx £2.500 per eye to have surgery privately, first operation 2 weeks for surgery.  29 weeks was the waiting time for an initial appointment at local NHS hospital and other hospitals within a 40 mile radius. I saw my GP who fully appreciated what this had done to me and she referred me  for urgent appointment and I had the option to see a specialist at a local Private BMI hospital who undertook NHS treatment. First appointment late July and he made provision for the first op late October. Surgery went fine, 31/2 hours stay and home now waiting for 2nd operation which I believe will be early new year.

I didn't appreciate just how bad my eyesight was until after the first op (on what was always my 'bad eye'). Two days and I could see individual blades of grass and the frost on them! It's a tad disorientating with the odd vision but.
I'm adapting and I can drive  I've also have managed to thread the needles on my sewing machines and thread the overlocker!

Do please ask your doctor for an urgent referral.

I remember so well the fabulous kilts you used to make and hope that you will one day be able to sew again albeit only when you can.

Pat.

@Greybird  Tiggersew still sews but he also does other craftwork at which he's extremely good, he's also a superb photographer. Think he's been so busy helping me out (alongside his other commitments) that there's not a lot of time left over in his day!

Talking of the GB Sewing bee, we were having a laugh the other day, visualising Demented Fairy being on the show, daren't spell out on here what we envisaged I'll wet myself, suffice to say DF was a resounding winner and that was nothing to do with the sewing results!

@Elnnina  Sewing has really been a no-no since the onset of RA and unfortunately I had to take quite large dosses of steroids resulting in a weight gain of 3 stones, being only 5feet tall  it was very obvious, very demoralising and for me embarrassing,  none of my clothes would fit and of course I couldn't make anything. Gave nearly all my wardrobe to charity and bought just what I could bear to wear. Now, been off the steroids for quite a while and take various DMARD's to control the RA and am  back to 7 1/2 stone (Yipee),off course the clothes I bought are too big and frankly even if I get back to sewing properly they are not really what I want to wear so they are off to the charity shop. a couple of weeks ago I managed to shorten some Jersey trousers 13/14 yr old size from ASDA which aren't too bad for everyday wear.

Enough gloom and doom I am much much better so onwards and upwards.

The garden sail which Tiggersew made is sadly no more but it was fantastic and I hope to have another one for next summer. Tiggersew is such a talented man and he's been doing quite a lot of DIY jobs for me so I will be able to get around to doing proper sewing fairly soon. Need to sort out my sewing room first though, I had fabric in the sewing room, kitchen, and sitting room, dressmakers dummies as well not to mention sewing machines and all the other items that go along with sewing.

Thank you for the welcome.

@Elnnina I have done nothing for the last three years or so, sewing or otherwise. Rheumatoid Arthritis hit me  and it's taken until a few months ago to even want or be able to do very much at all.  Then I got a double whammy 'smack' with bilateral cataract diagnosis!

Suffice to say that medication has eventually helped with the arthritis and  I've had the first cataract operation with good results, hoping the second on will be soon and equally successful.

@Greybird I'm in Swindon, so not too far away from you.

Hello everyone I've looked at the forum for a while although I haven't done any sewing for a quite some time.

There are quite a few names I remember from TSF and it's good to see what some members have been up to. Looking forward to catching up with you and also meeting new people.
