OOOO! They are great fun! I've got an ancient Singer one, with an equally nasty spike (but does  have a little cover for it) It screws into the machine bed.

I rather like the pic of the circles - has given me inspiration!  I used it mainly when i made some little skirts for my granddaughter,  I  have a circle cutter, so appliquéd some circles onto the skirts , and then embellished them with some hot fix crystals!

I had a similar thing happen the other day - the material got pushed too hard into the stitch hole (I think I was using too large a needle) - I was playing with stitching on some old fabric.   The needle must have then bent, then hit the needle plate and shattered into three bits.....and finally dropped out!  i found one part of the needle stuck under the feed dogs!

I too use the long bristled decorators paint brush! brilliant!

So, in essence, what I learnt about all the kerfuffle was, use correct needle for fabric, even if you are just playing, make sure the needle is screwed in properly (they can shake loose), Use a decent quality needle, decent thread and check the  needle plate for burrs and even check the that the needle eye is smooth!  Ive also found a small thread in the bobbin case....

Still, the one thing about sewing machines is the they try to test our patience, some more than others!

Ah Ha! someone has been reading my mind!  I have been half considering exactly the same machine, and for similar reasons too!  I have a Pfaff Performance 5. with lots of bells and whistles, which was what I wanted at the time........I also have never quite gelled with it and I don't really know why - perhaps its a little finicky too?

I am tempted by the Juki, for the same reasons, good quality stitch, needle up/down, inbuilt cutter etc, and the ability to free motion easily.  Yes, I have a Singer 201k which produces the best stitch ever, but just a little difficult with needle up/down etc (oh I think I'm being Lazy)

Well, all I can say is, if you can afford it, have it! :D

Helen Howes is  a great source of old machine parts and lots of lovely attachments!  Just google her, she has a workshop at Raveningham (Norfolk/Suffolk border) and can be found also under Raindrop Kites.

You're perfectly right about non straight stitch only machines making a little wobble in the straight stitches!  I thought I was being a typical nit picky Virgo, but my 201K and 100 year old 99 sew perfect, straight lines an no wobbly stitches! My 401G does a fabulous zig zag, and performs brilliantly with all its 'top hat' cams, but straight stitch? a bit disappointing to say the least (although I am trying to look for a straight stitch needle plate for it with not much luck.

And, as for the Pfaff Performance.....can it do perfect straight stitches?  errr.......no!

So, so pleased to be here, and a big thank you to all of you who got this lovely site up and running!  I haven't had much of a chance to have a look round yet, but will do when time allows.

Looking forward to hearing about what everyone else has been up to, other members old sewing machines........i had to stop myself bidding on a Singer 99 treadle in a rather lovey cabinet at our local auctions today........the table was lovely but the machine was a rust bucket.....Still, I really don't  think I need another one.......or do 1?

Anyhow, good to see some recognisable names here, its wonderful.

Anyone going the quilt show at Duxford tomorrow? I am going for some inspiration as its something I've only just started doing and am seriously hooked (eeeeek)...... this could become my new favourite thing!!
