Access All Accessories / The Design Feature Thread
« on: June 12, 2021, 12:48:30 PM »
I've always had a dark sense of humour and find myself amused by the lighthearted misfortune of others.
I'm hoping this thread serves 2 purposes.

1) Entertainment in the mistakes design features of our sewing adventures.

2) The reassurance that even the best of us (clearly not me) make unplanned alterations.

Here goes...

Sewing Spaces and Furniture / Not quite a horn

My new sewing table.
https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07JGWR1YM/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_glt_fabc_2099RWM9KP5N41Y53735?psc=1

Technically it's an office/writing table but the steel frame makes it good for sewing machines and cutting on.
Putting it together was a breeze thanks to all but one hole lining up. 6 adjustable feet made getting it balanced and level a bit tricky but more sturdy...'specially on wonky unlevel bedroom floorboards.
I have plans to fit shelves and things under it in time when I don't feel quite so rotten.
Can't really complain for £60 :)

Patchwork & Quilting ... Welcome to the Darkside / Cats!
« on: June 03, 2021, 09:48:07 AM »
I hate the furry little rotbags, but Pam's auntie loves 'em. Sooo, Pam's asked me to make her (auntie) a bed runner as a thank you for all she's done for her.
So here it is...so far. Pam's picking up fabric for the border today. Some kind of bright plain pink I think and the wadding arrives tomorrow. 2oz weight. I think the backing will be the same plain pink. Top stitching will be a ridiculously bright and loud pink too.
She likes her pink.
Hopefully a new bobbin case arriving sat will solve my machine stitching woes and a new cutter blade arriving Mon will fix the auto cutter woes.
Here's to hoping.

Sewing Machines / Cutter brush...
« on: May 26, 2021, 00:39:00 AM »
I need a new one...if that's what it's called.
Stupidly, I thought it was a big lump of fluff the other week and pulled it out with tweezers then binned it. Since then when I've used the automatic thread cutter, my fabric sticks in the needle plate and needs a bit of a yank to pull it free. I've determined that the fluff was a brush designed to stop the thread disappearing into said cutter slider thingymibob.
Here's where it goes (where the red fluff is)

So, to my question. The machine is a Brother innov-is A150 and I wonder if anyone here knows where I can find a spare? I'm not having much luck myself.

Sewing Machines / Timing ll
« on: May 19, 2021, 12:07:06 PM »
Morning boys and girls. I hope you can help me...again :\
Using a twin needle I notice that I'm getting some skipped stitches on the right thread. The left is all hunky dory.
Here I'm going through 1mm ish leather and polyester canvas. The needle is a schmetz. Other fabric combos have a similar outcome aaaaaaand to top it off, this happens with a single needle if it's set to the right of the machine.
I have absolutely no idea how to adjust the timing on this thing as it's a top loading bobbin type. Brother innov-is A150.

My mum asked me if I could do her a quilt. For a double bed  :scream:
Is that even possible on a standard size sewing machine? And if so, how?
Isn't bunching an issue on the right side of the needle?

Current Projects / First Quilt!
« on: April 05, 2021, 23:24:39 PM »
I started this yesterday following YouTube tutorials from Melanie Ham. It'll be a doggy bed/blanket.
A bit of unpicking was involved but nothing too serious. I'll be ordering the wadding? on Thursday and depending on finances, a walking foot. Are the cheapo £10 ones on Amazon any good, or do I splash out on a brother foot?

Tech Know How / Editing
« on: March 27, 2021, 10:41:13 AM »
I've noticed recently that my ability to edit the lettering (strike though, bold, italics etc) and smileys have disappeared while using my phone.
Is my phone to blame (it seems OK on other forums) or has something changed here?

I made new mudflaps for my bike.
Faux tan leather with a pvc membrane sewed on the back.
Fitting those snap fasteners to the mudguards was a nightmare as the supplied tool couldn't be used.

Sewing Machines / Clunky noise
« on: February 07, 2021, 20:05:27 PM »
Hellooooo fellow sewing friends!
Something that "seems" to be getting louder is a clunking sound as the thread from the spool passes over the bobbin in my top loading machine. I've narrowed it down to a small spring on the outside of the bobbin case, each time the thread crosses between it and the case.
Is this normal? It's making a normally very quiet machine annoyingly loud.

Sewing Machines / Tangled!
« on: January 19, 2021, 11:41:05 AM »
No not the Disney film, my twin needles.
When I come to go around a tight corner, I lift the presser foot, turn the material and then lower the foot. By the 3rd or so corner the thread has twisted itself and gets caught in the bobbin case. By the time I've freed it up, my lovely twin stitch has gone pear shaped and it's soul destroying.
Is this something I have to get used to or do you lovely ladies and gentlemen have the answer?

Sewing Machines / My New Toy!
« on: December 29, 2020, 01:47:14 AM »
I decided that I've well and truly caught the sewing bug and therefore (needed) wanted a better sewing machine.
There's mixed reviews on the Uten 2685a but it's a fraction of the cost of similar specced Janomes etc. I'll hopefully not find out why it's a fraction of the cost too soon but today's tinkering with it has put a smile on my face. It's brill!
I'll do a better review (from a beginners point of view) when I've spent more time with it. One thing I found very odd is that the foot pedal does not control the speed. It's basically a foot operated on/off switch with the speed adjustment being a slider switch on the actual machine! I'll explain how I discovered that in my review. It wasn't an easy lesson to learn.
Anyhoo, here's Miss Uten.

Sewing Machines / Timing
« on: December 22, 2020, 11:01:44 AM »
Morning girls and boys. I'm back with yet another brain picking question.
DO you have 'odd' timing to run your machine and if so, is it unusual?
The reason I ask is that having watched numerous YouTube videos and instructionals I have deemed my machines timing to be so far off the mark that it's ridiculous.
The photos in order show the needle at the bottom of the stroke, the hook meeting the needle and then the needle eye where it should be meeting the hook. I've had to deliberately set it like this to get the wretched thing to not skip stitches when zig zagging through two relatively thin (1mm ish) pieces of leather, using a 90/14 needle and heavy thread.
