As I was hemming a jacket, I remembered I have a couple of "down turn fellers" for my coverstitch machine - and it was time I actually used them.  I normally bodge it (no surprise there then!) and just turn the hem under as I go, which mostly works, but using this gadget was brilliant, but I must change needles and use the right and centre, not the centre and left as it's left a bit of an edge on the inside, but I have scissors.

If you have a coverstitcher and don't want to spend ages preparing hems, then I recommend one of these  0_0

Technical Help / Help please, I'm hanging wonky...
« on: May 31, 2018, 11:41:11 AM »
What is going on here???  I lay it flat and the zip looks like it's in ok, but put it on, and it hangs all wonky.  Pleased does anyone have any ideas??  Or should I just thread some elastic through the hem and pull the whole lot in a bit?

Edit:  It'd help if I put the pic in  :|

Fun with Fabric / UK Fabrics Online

Just wondering if anyone has used them recently?  I ordered last Friday, but never got a confirmation email, although the order does show in 'My Account' on their website.  I've had stuff before from them but not for about a year.  Their 'live chat' never seems to be available, and I'm now waiting for a reply to my email.  The first email I sent to the address on my Paypal confirmation, but that has bounced back, so now sent to a different one on their website.

Technical Help / Centre front question
« on: May 21, 2018, 12:37:25 PM »
A top with no button band, just a bodged folded back facing - would you have the buttons at the centre front or the edge of right front???
I think I'm going for the edge of the front, as I shall hopefully use just fairly insignificant buttons on this one.

Is there a correct way to do it?

50 A4 sheets of the damn things!!  There didn't seem to be an option to print to A3  :(

How do I overlap them?  There seems to be a border on all edges, so do I need to cut two edges off each sheet as I can't see through the paper?

50 sheets...

50...

WTF was I thinking???

Sewing Spaces and Furniture / My sewing room - almost sorted now
« on: May 15, 2018, 18:11:36 PM »
Having moved my sewing worktop from under the window, I think it now works for having multiple machines out, although it does still involve a bit of sliding 'em backwards and forwards.
As you can see, I still don't seem to be able to put everything away  :S
Also, behind the door, is my knitting machine table, I still need to set the machine up.

I have bias binding on a reel and was thinking where can I put it so it doesn't fall on the floor and all unravel while I'm sewing it round an armhole?

Patterns Discussion / Help me find a jacket pattern please
« on: April 22, 2018, 11:56:53 AM »

I love the look of this, but I'm too fat for it it's so expensive, and I could easily make one, but I've been through all the coats and jackets on Jaycotts and nothing similar.
Has anyone spotted anything like it?  I particularly like the waist detail.
Thank you, oh wise ones  0_0

After many months of no sewing due to building work, I now have my sewing room, so time to use it!
I'd ordered a few bits of fabric in the last couple of weeks, so thought I'd cut out two of them in my favourite easiest to sew and wear flared top.  The back centre seam has a very big flare out over the bum, so I take this in about three inches on the pattern piece usually, but as the green mock cable knit fabric was rather narrow, it meant I had to take it in more, resulting in an almost, but not quite, straight back seam.  This one is finished, must take a pic.
I also cut out a blue camo jersey, which isn't finished as the coverstitcher decided to skip stitches.  New needles didn't help, so this morning I will swap the threads and see if that's it, although I usually use Moon threads with no problems at all.
Oh, and cutting out was so much easier on my kitchen island unit!

Edit: Spot the mistake design feature on the khaki cable knit due to not really having enough fabric.  :P

Fun with Fabric / Selvedge holes - right and wrong sides

Following a recent thread about right sides of fabrics, and having discovered through the wonders of google that there's two schools of thought about the smooth or bumpy selvedge holes, let do our own research!  Off to check my stash now  0_0

Following someone's mention of this pattern (sorry, was it Tamnymore??)  I thought I'd buy it.  It appears it's not available now, but I tracked one down in America, very cheap and with postage, still only cost about £12.  :)
It appeared from the pattern envelope that it was a similar length to V9112, so I shortened it across the armholes by and inch, then by 1 1/2 inches a bit below the armholes, then decided I could take a bit more off the bottom if necessary - it's not necessary it seems.  As usual I only had 2 metres of fabric and it called for 3m, but by omitting the binding strips (I'll use black satin bias binding for the neck edge and armholes) and the front facings (I'm using quite a substantial fabric, it'd be too thick with a facing, I'll just turn the front edges in) I had a few centimetres left over, great  :)
It's sewn together, still needs the collar, armholes, hem, front edges, and buttonholes doing, but it looks good, quite pleased with it as a change from my favourite V9112.  I'll post pics when it's done, which may not be tomorrow as the builder will be making a mess again.

House Beautiful / Making a pin cushion
« on: November 09, 2017, 16:08:40 PM »
Do you know how hard it is to buy a pin cushion?  Round here it is anyway.  I like a nice stable, heavy, won't-move-when-I-wildly-stab-a-pin-in-it type.
Pic 1 - A nice little tea light holder, a couple of bits of sponge foam and a curtain fabric sample, that will work.  Hot glue to stick it together I thought.
Pic 2 - Hmm, so hot glue sticks to neither velvet nor stone.  Tried another glue, no good.
Pic 3 - Then I thought of superglue, yes!!  One neat, stylish, heavy pin cushion  :)
