The Haberdashery / Bobbin thread for soft furnishing
« on: January 11, 2022, 20:17:50 PM »
My son has persuaded me to make him some piped seat cushions for a bench. I think I’m happy about the construction side of it. Just wondering if others with experience could advise on what to use in the bobbin on a domestic machine? It seems to me that the stitching will only be as strong as the weakest thread and I can’t put upholstery type thread in the bobbin. I’m wondering about nylon? Any thoughts appreciated. Thanks!

Embroidery Machines / Re: Craving an embroidery machine

Do you by any chance have an older Bernina which is capable of embroidery? (Eg .630, 580, 570)
If so, I have a module you (or anyone else) can have for shipping cost only. It would be necessary to purchase hoops as I use those supplied as extras with my newer model. It is in perfect working order and comes with embroidery foot, original box, and carrying case.

After a good steaming, I would skip the clapper on the trickiest part and show it’s who’s boss with a heavy duty hammer. Also, as the final stitches in the troublesome areas reach the needle, you could try turning the wheel by hand, making sure the needle is about to pierce exactly where you want it to go. Good luck - I feel your pain!

Alterations Advice Please / Re: PJ Problemo

Don’t worry about the hanger to take them back. There is an option of leaving it behind for recycling at time of purchase.

Overlockers & Coverstitchers / Re: Overlocker?

You definitely won’t want to go back to being without one, once you get used to it. One thing I would add, which I don’t  think anyone has mentioned, is the value of having Differential Feed. I seem to have mine turned on slightly for most knit seams. (If you stitch a sample seam and put your work on the table, it should lie flat. If the edge is wavy, it has stretched and you should have used Diff Feed). There are many other uses, but that is an important one. Go for it and enjoy!

Your Favourite Suppliers / Matching Sweatshirt Fabric and Ribbing
« on: November 08, 2021, 13:45:57 PM »
Please can anyone recommend a UK retailer who sells plain coloured cotton/Lycra sweatshirting, who can also supply the coordinating ribbing?

I can find plenty of sellers who do each one separately, but rarely do they actually advertise a proper match with each other. I have bought several which are “near enough’ but they never seem to be as good a match as you see in bought garments.  Thank you!

@Stitchalot @Ploshkin  ... That is beautiful, Is it stitched on felt ??
and how are the edges done?

Thanks Imi. It’s all quilting cotton. After stitching the front, the backing is placed on top - comprising two folded pieces overlapping in the middle. Then after stitching and trimming it’s turned through. No hand sewing whatsoever!

A huge thank you to the sender in Gloucestershire for my beautiful mug rug (I think I know who you are!!)
You absolutely nailed the brief and the design and stitching are just perfect. I will definitely very much enjoy using it. Thanks again! X

Whoops, amended as I managed to post two shots of the back! Always struggle with photos here! Hope this has worked now

I’m excited to report that the postman brought me a little package from Gloucestershire today. I’m being restrained and have it put aside to open on the appointed day! Thank you to my swappee!  :)

I’m a bit embarrassed to admit that my makes are well under way. Wall hangings - one for each of the grandchildren.

I’m new to this - newbie  question!  I’m curious to know if the person we send to is different from the person we receive from, or are we exchanging with a partner?

Access All Accessories / Re: How do I sew a 3D curve?
« on: August 26, 2021, 08:06:17 AM »
I would suggest pinning in the direction of the stitching, along the seamline (remove as you stitch) - putting them at right angles holds the fabric too far in. Better still, baste very close to where the seam will be. Also, using only a small seam allowance will help. Stitch with the larger side downwards - slowly! Good luck.

I will give it a go - count me in too pls.

‘ Shallow zig zag’ - that’s the description which escaped me!

My recommendation is to attach linings with a longish (3.5mm?) stitch. More importantly, set the stitch to a very slight zig-zag so the stitch looks more wobbly than a zig-zag. This will allow everything to drop as it hangs. It’s also a good idea to use a walking foot if you have one.
