Well done @Iminei  and @Sandra for coming up with a solution to the badly written pattern.

At this rate there will no mystery to the murder - the pattern writer will have been murdered in the sewing room by a disgruntled quilt maker with a rotary cutter.

I came across the Bernina workbooks (while looking for information on old Bernina feet) and the first two of the sewing machine books might be of interest to you. The instructions won't exactly match your machine, but I'm sure you could find the equivalent stitches.

@maliw Guild members get advance booking for the workshops - they go on general sale next Monday.

@Iminei The one that was selling fast was Precision Piecing by Phillipa Naylor and I did manage to get a place  :)

The bag is amazing. People will be too busy marvelling at the fabric to consider how the zip should have looked.

Wow - some of the workshops are popular!

Booking opened for Quilters Guild members at 10am and by the time I found the workshop I wanted, there were only 5 places left. It had sold out by 10.15am.

The Show Must Go On / Re: Looking for Ringmaster Patterns

Burda have a formal jacket and waistcoat pattern that starts at 2 years, but might be a bit too detailed for dressing up.

Burda (again) have a pyjama pattern where the front of the jacket might be suitable to turn back to make lapels and this starts at 2 years.

Burda (yet again!) have a pirate costume that you might be able to adapt, but it starts at 4 years.

Can you post a picture of what you have in mind (or the patterns that have been discounted)? Is a ringmaster's jacket a variation on a tail coat?

Edited: I've found a child's tailcoat pattern, but it starts at age 7. The pattern companies seem to think that younger boys want to dress up as dinosaurs not ringmasters.

Overlockers & Coverstitchers / Re: Excellent coverstitch information
« on: April 03, 2019, 11:16:55 AM »
I'm another one who can't get twin needles to work properly for a coverstitch type hem - I always seem to get tunnelling, even after adjusting the tension. Perhaps I should try using a stabiliser, but it would probably be just as quick to get out my coverstitch machine instead.

Patterns Discussion / Re: PDF printing

@Efemera Thanks for this - I went shopping yesterday and got a pack for when the bank paper found at work from years ago runs out.

@b15erk I have some A4 40 gsm paper that I got for printing PDF but unfortunately the printer doesn't like it. If you want to try it for tracing, let me have your address and I will send you some.

I have a Fiskars 24” folding ruler - great for storage and for travelling.

Vintage Machines / Re: Jones Z-620 sewing machine
« on: March 28, 2019, 15:29:19 PM »
I don't think it is worth spending too much money on the machine. Hopefully you can take a look inside and getting the foot lifting and lowering - oil and a hairdryer can be usedful to unstick stuck parts.

I would also check if the bobbin winder works as often the rubber ring perishes and the winder won't drive from the main wheel. You should be able to check this partly without a bobbin just by pushing the winder against the main wheel and seeing if the necessary bits rotate.

I have got a bag of bits and pieces from an unidentified machine of a similar era which I think include a bobbin case and some winder rings. It may be false economy to spend time trying to get them to work if they are the wrong ones, but I am happy to send you anything that might be useful and would save you money.

The Haberdashery / Re: flat based pattern weight with handle

@annieeg Amazon UK have quite a few options if you search for steak weight.

If you can't find one exactly the same, have a look in antique/junk shops or car boots sales for the old non-electric flat/sad irons. Alternatively, a steak weight from kitchenware places looks quite similar, but postage could be expensive.
