A bit of a 'do' / Re: Daughter's Satin Tuxedo Jacket
« on: May 17, 2018, 21:33:23 PM »
Just to update the mock up is done.  Width was added for her shoulders and back.  Arms were shortened.  Seams were let out for the hips.  Seams were taken in at the waist.  And her shoulders are such that she doesn't need shoulder pads.  It was made out of the most hideous orange & rust colour blocked fabric.  It reminds me of something that Don Cherry would wear.  The good fabric is much more tasteful.  They're all away this weekend - so, I can sew in peace.

Fajita, the guidelines from the local health unit at the time were to put in a plastic bag and freeze for 2 weeks any soft item that couldn't be washed.  I couldn't wash glittered spandex or I'd lose all the glitter.  And I had dozens of other costumes to make.  At the time, this community had a long time lice problem at the elementary schools - we're talking more than 10 years - I was not willing to risk passing it along to one other kid through my sewing room.

Good for you, Catllar!  Honestly, just apply the 20 foot rule - if you can't notice it from 20 feet away while they're moving, it's all good.  Or you could just tell her that fixing it would cost her 50 - that should take the wind from her sails!  Glad to hear that your other problem has decided not to perform.  Fortunately, most people are genuinely grateful - but still there are people who try your patience and goodwill.  One of my favorite's was the boy who forgot to say that he had lice when I was fitting a vest that tied at the back of the neck.  His vest went into my freezer for 2 weeks to kill the lice.  Just yuck!!!

Oh Catllar, how incredibly rude of her!  But there are always those who don't appreciate the time & effort required to sew that many costumes.  I would absolutely leave her costume until last - I have to admit that when I was costuming I would sew the more difficult/less appreciative dancers' costumes first if I was using a new pattern - I would work out any technical issues on their costumes  - the later ones were always better.  Also, if you have need of larger heavier fish, I have whole, frozen Pacific salmon at your disposal.

After sewing for the local dance school for years, I don't miss it.  I'm sure as DD1 is planning a professional contemporary dance career that I will get asked on occasion to costume a production - that's OK but I am absolutely over the crazy deadlines, 3 time a year, and year after year.  I've offered my services to the 2 youth companies that she danced with but so far all has been quiet.

And I always felt the way that you do, Catllar.  I never let other people cut out - it was just too stressful.  With tight deadlines, if they messed up, I'd have been up the creek without a paddle.

I went into 2 fabric stores today & only came out with some extra buttons  along with the bits that I needed for her jacket.  So, the interfacing, lining, satin for the lapels, buttons and buttonhole twist is now all safely in the sewing room.  We also bought her dress shirt - currently, at the tailor's having the arms shortened (I hate alterations!) & her shoes today.

Yes, Tamnymore, I'm at the north end of the Island - in Port McNeill.  We've been up here for over 20 years now - 8 years in Port Alice (on the west coast) and 12 1/2 in Port McNeill.  We, like so many before us, said it was for a year or two - now, it's over 20 and many more still ahead of us.

Woo hoo!  I forgot all about Gala Fabrics in Victoria - they have a selection of the right interfacings.  It may be 460 km away but I don't need to take the ferry.  So, on Saturday, I'll drive down from my Dad's and check it out - hopefully, they have what I need.  And maybe something that I want  ;).

Thanks for the details on which weight to use where.  I was already planning on using sew-in as I highly doubt my ability to get a great application of fusible onto the satin - let us just say that I've had less than happy results before.  I'm probably going to order my interfacing, sleeve heads and other bits from B. Black & Sons.  I'd love to be able to see and feel it in person but no local shop carries this stuff.

Thanks for the tips - I already bought new pins as mine have seen a lot of use. The fabric doesn't stretch and the flowers are slightly raised.  I guess I'll have to order in some various interfacings - I know that I need sleeve heads and shoulder pads.  I'm not headed to Vancouver until the end of the month and don't want to wait to find out that they don't have what I need.  Off to do some on-line shopping - as long as I don't get distracted.

A bit of a 'do' / Daughter's Satin Tuxedo Jacket

My youngest daughter has requested that I make her a satin tuxedo jacket for her highschool graduation.  If it was a ballgown, I'd be less stressed - I haven't made a jacket in 28 years!  I'm making Vogue 2383 with the shawl collar Vogue 2383.  The fabric is a dull, medium weight, black satin with blue abstract flowers.  I need to make it larger in the chest and the arms -a toile is definitely necessary.  She's really strong & muscular - she's a professional timber sports competitor - stronger than alot of men.  I'm busy reading the Threads Sewing Guide, the Singer Tailoring book and Claire Schaeffer's Tailoring Techniques - and trying to sort out what applies to a satin jacket versus a wool jacket.  I'm trying to figure out what kind of interfacing to use and where to use it because I don't think that I need to fuse interfacing to the entire front.  I'm afraid of overthinking this.  Any & all suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

The Show Must Go On / Re: Pattern for this leotard?
« on: March 03, 2018, 22:38:10 PM »
When I added a deep V to a unitard, I made a mock-up first without the V.  Then, I had the dancer try it on & sketched in the shape on her.  Remember that the fabric stretches - I've made a few scandalous mock-ups by mistake.  This way when she takes it off the V will be the right size to cut as a pattern piece.  Also, you may not need the full 6 cm at the hip - it could end up baggy.  I suggest measuring the actual pattern at the hip and comparing it to the measurements that it says that it fits.  That ratio is probably what you want to stick to.  Happy sewing

Hi, I'm new... / Hi There

I've been sewing for 33 years & I find there is always more to learn.  I was on TSF and spent most of my time on dancewear - booty shorts to tutus.  I'm currently working on a satin tuxedo jacket for DD2 to wear to graduation - it's been longer than I care to think about since I made a jacket.  And I'm teaching a friend's daughter to sew.

It's good to be back after a couple of tough years.
