Fun with Fabric / Re: Throw-type Stuff

@Acorn if there are no cushions involved then it wouldn't be too difficult to sew a loose cover.

For Sale, Wanted & Free to a good home / Re: Bernina 830 Record £175
« on: June 16, 2022, 15:21:17 PM »
The price is an absolute bargain, I'd snap it up. There aren't too many of the feet I have that I use regularly, the basic, embroidery, small darning and gathering foot.

All the decorative stitches are achieved with the embroidery/satin stitch foot and I do have a circular embroidery attachment that is extremely useful.

A genuine Bernina Adaptor is a must if you want to use a Ruffler attachment or binder attachment.

Old old style feet are usually available on Ebay or, you can still buy new from Bernina suppliers.

Parts or accessories? Really depends on what you need /want.

Foot pedals/leads etc. Genuine original are only available used, as are pedal caddy, extension tables, hard cases, accessories box and knee lifts.

Parts that wear, Cam Stack Gears (not all available are equal!) and Bobbin Winder mechanism/Tyres and Belts can also be purchased new.

A fabulous machine and will last for many years if serviced and cared for.

Hope this helps and good luck.

Patterns Discussion / Re: Pattern for single-breasted coat needed

This could work, omit the pocket flaps and shorten the length.

I once had quite a number of Roma fabric samples, lovely colours and predominantly a sort of hessian background with  a velour/velvet type designs, think heavy curtaining or upholstery type.

I'm not a bag maker and they weren't big enough for anything else I could think of so I put them on Ebay and couldn't believe how quickly they were snapped up.

Patterns Discussion / Re: Hobbycraft made to measure patterns

Don't think there are any patterns on there which would tempt me down the purchase route, there are quite a few other more well know/tried and tested companies that offer their patterns made to your custom measurements with far better options and choices.

The Horn Hobby Chair I have is quite old, at least 14yrs and I must admit the back and seat pads are more like the Bernina Chair than the more recent Horn ones.

Someone has a Bernina Red Chair for sewing for sale on Facebook, sadly in USA. Wanting 120.00 USD.

I didn't know Bernina had these. New price from Bernina dealers 449.00 USD.

Can't find them for sale in UK.

I'm a cheapskate, well not really. The best unpicker I've used for many years was a bonus for being a midwife. Suture Remover! Sharpest ever, I'm a bit naughty and use mine without a handle. They're quick and cheap to replace when getting past their best which actually takes quite some time.

Yes you need to take care but honestly I had more mishaps with the traditional unpicker than I've ever had whilst using these. Use pins when cutting buttonholes.

Think you can buy on Ebay but these are on Amazon

Embroidery and Embellishment / Re: Crewel Work
« on: February 21, 2022, 14:20:46 PM »
@Lowena I have to be honest and say it's not the easiest craft I've done and I'm still very much a  learner. I started with a little booklet 'Creating Coggeshall Lace' by Jean Dudding. This work is done on cotton bobbinet and there was a huge industry of cottage workers. As with so many forms of needlework produced by hand for centuries , machines took over and the lace became cheaper so the  skilled handwork's were priced out of the industry.

Aari needlework is very similar produced using the same type of hooks/needles but worked on woven fabrics.

Tambour requirements are a handle and hook. You insert a hook of the desired size depending on your chosen thread, fabric, finish etc. Using an embroidery frame or a slate frame.

I used to crochet a lot and there is a similarity in using the hooks but I does require practise (a lot) to master the rhythm  and tension to achieve but once you have done so, the work can be done very swiftly! I've not got round to trying it with beads yet, if I ever will. lol

You can find Tambour Hooks and needles and Aari Hooks for sale on Ebay now, when I wanted to buy my first ones it took a lot of searching to find supplies.  There are lots of excellent videos on Youtube which explain how to use the the needle correctly because until you can do that, you can't advance.

It's fascinating but definitely a skill where you have to persevere with the very basic needle use before you can advance . Ask me how I know?  However I'm persevering.

Hope this helps.

I have a Horn Hobby Chair and cannot fault it. I also have an office chair at my computer desk.

Much prefer the sewing chair!

Not sure if this will be helpful because it's a cardigan/jacket but maybe you could adopt the principle of the pockets for a sweatshirt. Nothing falls out of these pockets and it would just be the straight seamline showing between the pocket and side seams. I've made it a few times and had debated putting interfacing along the 'fold line' of the pockets themselves not just at the sides.

If you watch the video, my ramblings may make more sense!
