Embroidery and Embellishment / Fun with labcoats
« on: September 22, 2020, 17:19:05 PM »
I am a retired Science teacher and still have a couple of perfectly good lab coats.  I use them as aprons, since they cover your clothing quite well. (Better than actual aprons, in fact.)

So I had some fun embroidering one today. I love the designs and will do my other lab coat tomorrow.

Embroidery Machines / Problem threading my embroidery machine.
« on: September 14, 2020, 14:23:12 PM »
My threader was malfunctioning so I got it fixed (under warranty.). Yesterday, I finally had a chance to use it again.  I had no problems threading, except for one spool of black embroidery thread.  I can’t understand why the threader worked with all the other colors, but not that one.

Has anyone else had a similar problem? Any ideas why this would happen?

Embroidery and Embellishment / Metallic thread
« on: July 04, 2020, 18:33:48 PM »
Since acquiring the embroidery machine, I have gotten curious about using metallic thread.  I imagine it looks great but I could use some advice about how to work with it. Anything you can tell me is appreciated.

Embroidery and Embellishment / Freestanding Lace
« on: July 01, 2020, 17:10:30 PM »
I decided to try this for the first time today, after finding some images that weren’t so sickeningly Lacy.  There are all kinds of designs in many styles.  Ironically, I hate old-fashioned lace, but like the technique.
I had some trouble with my first piece as the thread got tangled.  But after changing the needle, taking apart the bobbin case & cleaning out all the tangled thread, the second one went more smoothly.
Here they are;

Dolls and Toys / Meet Misha
« on: June 24, 2020, 12:04:03 PM »
Here is my pal Misha Bearach. He was a get-well gift a number of years ago, when I had spinal surgery. His name is a play on the Hebrew words that begin our prayer for the sick, recited at worship services. I assume churches have a similar custom.

His original t-shirt (screen-printed with his name and the prayer) has faded so I had ordered this embroidered one a while ago.

Now that I have the new machine, I though everyone should know his job, as well as his name. So my first floated project was the back of his shirt. Placement was a little tricky on such a small shirt, but I like the result. Here is his bear behind.

Patchwork & Quilting ... Welcome to the Darkside / My first QAYG
« on: June 10, 2020, 19:38:25 PM »
I decided to give this a try, with eventual hopes of using this method to make a much larger piece.  Of course, this test piece was a first attempt and rife with mistakes. (Please don’t bother with tact- it’s a mess.) I am calling it a successful failure.

Success

I like the colors I used.
I got up the guts to try it with only YouTube for guidance. (YouTube can be helpful, but it’s no substitute for a live person who is in the room with you.)
I have already learned a few things from my mistakes.

Failure
The blocks are rather poorly lined up.
My mitered corners aren’t great.
There were places where my edge-binding didn’t quite envelop the top fabric & batting, so I had to oversew it.
I should have sewn some parts in a different sequence.

At least some of those mistakes would have been far les evident if I had used white thread.  This, however, was by design.  Knowing I was bound to make mistakes, I wanted to be able to get a good look at them.

I am not even close to ready to try a large blanket yet. That’s OK; learning is a process. So my near-term goal is to work with the small, expendable bits & pieces from my stash, to practice and refine my technique.

Embroidery and Embellishment / Heat Transfer Vinyl
« on: May 27, 2020, 12:35:15 PM »
Yesterday, I got to play with a bunch of my gadgets.  I made a tallit bag- a lined storage pouch For a traditional Jewish prayer shawl. (Among more traditional Jews, only men wear them. I am not so traditional and choose to wear one myself.)

I used just 2 fat quarters- one for the outside and one for the lining. The swatch above the pouch shows the lining fabric.

The letters spell talit in Hebrew. I used my Cricut Maker machine to cut them. The crown is just decorative. I used silver glitter heat-transfer vinyl (HTV) and pressed it in with my Cricut Easy Press. It runs hotter and is larger than an iron.

The letters on this side are also in HTV and spell my Hebrew name-Sara Ella. The snaps are magnetic and were attached with a Kam Snap Press.

Sewing Machines / My latest machine
« on: April 17, 2020, 20:03:05 PM »
I brought Orwell, (my big Brother) into the shop for a warranty repair. The machine won’t work with the pedal. While I was there. Since I was wearing a mask, I was permitted to wander about & shop. OMG, how long has it been since I just got to wander around a store?

In the course of my visit, I got to their “adoption room” and found a really nice Brother CP-6500. Not as many features are the big one, but enough to make it easy to use. Also a bit smaller, so I can take it to classes & club meetings.

Patchwork & Quilting ... Welcome to the Darkside / Self-binding quilts
« on: January 20, 2020, 00:48:37 AM »
I saw a video on this topic, which involves using the backing of the quilt to make the binding.
https://mypatchwork.wordpress.com/2019/12/01/self-binding-a-quilt-tiny-quilt-qal/?fbclid=IwAR2zKVH2XVLQACELatLfQGtPUw8bmvv1mybf72gE1vvXS3ZRK9iRR5ndxXI

I made a small sample piece to try it. It basically works, though I would use a larger border than what they recommend.

Dolls and Toys / What the well-dressed reindeer is wearing this year.
« on: January 06, 2020, 13:19:25 PM »
Here is my little friend Comet, proudly wearing his new poncho.  I started with a fat quarter of flannel. (I bought it because I just loved the print and figured that I would come up with a project for it later.)

I cut the piece in half and folded each half (RST) and sewed them into squares.  After turning them right-side out, I top-stitched around with a zig-zag stitch.  Then, I just sewed the 2 pieces together with top & side seams, leaving gaps for his head & hooves.

He finds it wam & cozy.

Sewing Machines / Surprising features on your machine
« on: December 19, 2019, 14:15:51 PM »
With my Brother machine, I have used a number of the stitches, but it does so many, I haven’t fully explored  all of them.  Today, I was pleasantly surprised to learn that it has an automatic button-sewing stitch.

Since I don’t sew buttons often, I hand’t even thought about it until now.

What features on your machines surprised you, when you found out they were there?

I am relatively new to sewing and quilting.  Up until recently, I have only worked on smaller items, such as placemats and mug rugs.

My last project, the tale runner, was the first thing I hav made that is (in any dimension) bigger than I am.  I struggled to keep seams and topstitching straight. I will be starting the larger part of the quillow, which will be 4 x 6 feet.  I could use some suggestions for handling larger items.  Thanks.

Machine Accessories / Brother sidecutter attachment
« on: September 19, 2019, 22:52:50 PM »
I am working on a quilted table runner.  I evened out the edges using the sidecutter.  (I don’t do this type of sewing often enough to warrant buying a serger.). This will be covered by the binding, but this evened it and reduced the bulk, so I think the biding will go on more neatly.

At one point, it got stuck and I had to just take out the fabric and start again. I have no idea why. Anyone else run into this problem?

Sewing Machines / Do you name your sewing machines?
« on: September 10, 2019, 14:17:14 PM »
Just about everything at our house gets a name...the vacuum cleaner ( a Hoover named Herbert) , the Jeep (Trevor-don’t ask why; my husband picked that one) and of course, the sewing machines.

Mine are;
1)The Janome- Naomi, after a cousin
2) The Singer- Beverly, after Beverly Sills, the opera singer (who was originally a Silverman, as am I)
3)The Brother- being an oversized machine, I named it Orwell.

What are your machines named and why?

Embroidery and Embellishment / Free motion embroidery
« on: September 05, 2019, 17:29:05 PM »
I have been learning this over the last few months.  My favorite use of it is to make holiday wall hangings. Typical size is 12” x 12” (approx. 30cm x 30cm.) I mostly do this on my Brother 575 machine.  My biggest challenge is outlining designs.  I tend to make a lot of mistakes, though the fill-stitching generally covers them. Does anyone else do this?

Here is an example;
