Vintage Machines / Re: Just look at this beauty

Thanks Leila May, oh you have the type of treadle base that I would love to own.  Perhaps one day, but I know for starters that a treadle will not fit in the boot of our car so that is a major problem.  I can keep on looking though, and as you will have read wrenkins set my heart all of a flutter with a link, but I am being strong, I love the roses but it has to be a nice machine and whilst the one wrenkins found is here in the UK it has been tampered with and it looks horrible on its existing box and with its hideous lid.

I was allowed to use a treadle at school - one of a few people. and then I moved on to electric, and I was also allowed to use the electric one when I sat my GCE exam.  We had two needlework classrooms, and when it was GCE exam time machines from the other classroom were brought in so each girl had her own machine to use, but most of them had hand cranked machines, just one or two electric, and I don't think the treadles were used.  I found treadling away very soothing - there is just something about it.

Oh wrenkins you set my heart beating very fast when I saw the link, and of course possibly within an afternoons outing.  BUT I see the decals were quite worn at the very front, and I didn't like the end plate, but mostly I hated the base and the box and the cover.  I did read all his blurb and what he had done, and there were holes made in the machine that were now hidden by a motor, and whilst he has changed the motor he says he is not an electrician - so I am steering well away from this machine.

I think a lot of the charm of these real old beauties is the wooden bases they come with, and on a fiddle base the way this is set in the wood is quite something.  It does show though that occasionally these Singer fiddle base with roses can be found in this country so I shall keep looking.

Thanks for the link though.

I mentioned in one of my other posts the most beautiful Fiddle Base treadle machine and I have found this You tube.
It is called 1888 Singer No.12 Ruffler on VS2 treadle Machine.  Isn't it the most beautiful machine and the lady who owns this is extremely lucky indeed to have this.  Not only is it in superb condition, it really does glow, and both the body of the machine and the treadle base are in excellent condition and as for the little cases of attachments just wow.

Now that is the type of treadle and machine that I would love to own - oh why isn't in this country and why isn't it up for sale???

Thank you wrenkins oh being a complete novice at this vintage lark, I really do need to go and get some proper stuff for cleaning, have been reading up this morning on the thread that Roger started last year, so  Plusgas should I find anything stuck, and AutoGlym for polishing and of course the booklet showing you how to take apart.

Now so far the wheel turns and the needle already in situ goes up and down but that is all I have tried.  In places the very pretty floral decals have worn, and the main CWS logo on the machine bed and up on the arm are a little faded  but for the small amount they were asking for this machine it needed a new home.  I am happy to go tinkering when I know what I am doing with the instructions and right tools for the job, and if it doesn't work then it can be just a decorative machine on display.  Even the coffin lid has some pretty decoration to the corners - haven't seen that before.

Oh a few years ago  on the old TSF someone put up a link to using an old vintage machine for embroidery and just how fast and easy they made it look.  Well as that link finished another loaded and oh this was the most magnificent treadle machine in immaculate order dating to around 1870's, it had I think a fiddle shaped machine bed and instead of the usual decals this one had roses on, the machine glowed, and worked, but it was in America and it also had the most amazing amount of accessories - I have never seen so many all neatly packed in purpose made cases.  Now that is the machine I would have loved to have had and it had a glowing black wrought/cast iron treadle.

Good morning Roger, thank you for your note, and no I haven't started cleaning yet - I need to get some supplies and the Tools for Self Reliance booklet first.  Also somehow the days seem to just whizz by and other things have got in the way.

My daughter popped in yesterday and she managed to get my photos on to my laptop - made it look easy - well she is a graphic designer so it was so easy for her.  So here are just four photos.  This is a 3/4 machine, and as I have already said the actual zipper foot is really tiny,  and I can see one of the pieces is just going out of the photo, but this was also on wrenkins photo of her accessories.

In the wardrobe / Re: Machine Guidance
« on: May 25, 2019, 13:20:46 PM »
May I add my comments on here too.  I am a friend of Twopence on here, and I have recently had to ask her for a machine back that I loaned to her just before Christmas.  Hence Twopence's need for a small easily portable machine to take to her P&Q classes.  So there we were looking at the SMD website, each in our own homes, but on the phone to one another.  Whilst I have never used SMD, I know others on TSP have with excellent results.  You say you are a beginner, so looking at what Morgan has suggested all from SMD, there is a bonus you get to have a huge amount of threads - there are 50 looks like 1,000 mts. spools, five pairs of scissors - all different sizes, a tape measure, some bobbins, an unpicker and some machine needles thrown in as an extra - so for someone starting out sounds like a good idea.

Of course using a local dealer is far and away the best way of looking and trying out various machines, but if there is not a dealer nearby and you have to use mail order, then SMD could well be your best bet.  I understand that Russell at SMD listens to what you are saying, and advises accordingly - now that is what I call good service.

Good luck in your quest.

Wow wrenkins a choice of two, I think I prefer the first one you showed, the one that is more decorated and has such a pretty end panel.

Now thank you for putting up a photo of the accessories, now I shall be watching intently for some answers as to what they are as I have one or two of those.

I bought my little dinky one really for its cuteness and as it is small and very pretty.  The box under the hand wheel has no lid nor all the wood trim that would have been around it but I am sure I can come up with something.

Come on wrenkins get one of these home - I  am eagerly looking forward to seeing which you you choose.  Is it for use or just for decoration?

Again my thanks to all who have helped it is really appreciated.  As Twopence mentioned yesterday I rang her to ask how to get the photos I had taken with a camera on to my laptop, and so far no luck.  I have done this before but on a previous laptop, and thus I am wondering whether there is something missing on this newer one that is baffling me.  I will get there  I hope.

I am pretty sure when I had this up on a table yesterday that in addition to the CWS Federation that it also mentioned 'family machine', and if I am right then according the something I was looking at on the internet, this means that it is a 3/4 machine - which explains its dinkyness - is that such a word?

I shall now go and explore TSP's vintage section on how to set about cleaning this up.

Now for another question, is the Tools for solidarity leaflet about refurbishing these old machines the one I need to get, the one I saw looked as though it was for Singer machines, and mine is by Jones.  Are the machins similar enough ? As you can see I am a complete novice as far as this is concerned but a very keen novice.

Now I just want/would like a black wrought iron treadle and I will be very happy.

Patterns Discussion / Re: FBA - Yet again
« on: May 22, 2019, 10:11:06 AM »
My pleasure Annie, and I am so glad that you have actually got this sorted, now for more FBA's on other patterns.  Yes that was kind of Hollyberry to come and help you out - yes it is amazing what TSP does - we all have the ability to sew and it is nice to be able to help one another out.  Twopence on TSP I have known for nearly 40 years, she used to live in my village, but has moved away but we are still in touch and she was here with me on Monday so that was nice.

Well this machine has found a new home with me, it is a dinky little machine and I am sure given time I can clean her up and she will be respectable again.  I have taken some photos, only cannot fathom out how to upload them to my laptop, so another ongoing project.  There were few items in the box, the tiniest zipper foot I have ever seen, and some odd looking items that I have never seen before.  The wooden case is like a coffin top, and has some interesting carving part way down the four corners  Just under the hand wheel there is a long cut out slot that is rounded at the back so I am wondering whether this could have been able to be converted to a treadle.

Dress Forms / Re: This lovely lady entered my home this weekend

I used to have one of those many years ago and ironically I named her Matilda as well.  Sadly the wire dress dummy is long gone, my neighbour saw this and asked if she could have this and used it to put over her salad growing bed.  My current dress stand is still called Matilda - do not know why I chose this name, but it has just stuck.  Enjoy creating with your Matilda.
