And the finished item ..... it still suffers a bit from sackish-ness .... but not so bad.

I could probably have done with a little shorter for the bodice, but still, it will still be comfortable.

After trimming off the middle, I take up the extra width before attaching to the bodice.

For the front, I put in two box pleats, located to line up with the bodice pleats.

On the back, I ran a simple gathering stitch, gathering only the section that would fall between the two darts.

Yes you can see the split, and yes it will be quite high.  But, since I am planning to only wear this tunic over pants, its not a bother.

I picked up one of these sleeveless shift dress, from the local charity store.  Its a very heavy woven fabric, sort of like a heavy linen, with some pretty embroidery on the bottom third.  Aside from the fact that it has zero shape to it at all, also as a result of me being so short, the dress reaches the floor when I put it on.  It only just fits around my belly, but was quite baggy around the bust, and certainly too big across the upper back.  I think a potato sack with a belt, would look more stylish.

The first thing I do is cut off across just under the bust.  Then from the top of what is now a skirt, cut off about 20cm.

To add some shaping to the bodice, I put some little box pleats at the front, and some darts in the back.

Sewing Spaces and Furniture / Re: New Sewing Table
« on: February 20, 2021, 22:53:03 PM »
You won't regret a cutting table (and your back with thank you).  This is a picture of my cutting table.  I have the luxury of being able to have it open to full width, and certainly when I was making the medieval costumes, it was brilliant.

The table is a brand called Tailormade, and is part of an integrated sewing room system, although I haven't got any of the other tables yet.  As strong and as stable as it is, I wouldn't put a sewing machine on it to sew.  Those are on smaller custom tables, to avoid vibration being an issue (my overlocker vibrated another machine off the table once).

Enjoy your table, it will be an asset for sure.

The Show Must Go On / Re: Mary Poppins Costume - Project Log

So breaking my fabric diet  :boohoo:, I picked up some navy suiting today, off the half price rack at my local lincraft.  I should have enough for both a skirt and jacket.

I also picked up some bemsilk lining, however, I am concerned that this doesn't have enough weight for the skirt, and I should line with something firmer.

Thoughts?

True to her autistic soul, since I suggested Mary Poppins as a costume (3 days ago), my daughter has researched both the movies and the books, done a comparison of the costumes, including the descriptions in the books, and purchased a set of books for her classroom. After all that research, she has decided that the skirt should be a deep blue, although not with piping, as one of the movie costumes is. if we can find a suitable jacket when thrift shopping (in which case black will be fine) great, otherwise, I should plan to do a blue jacket as well.

I put on a pair of my linen pants this morning, and it occurred to me that a nice heavy linen could do well for the skirt.  Although, she doesn't iron, so that aspect may be a problem.  Still thinking about that one.

Thanks for the link...
Here's a photo of the type of cord I've got for the cushion. The cord is shiny and slippy! And when I tried to weave the two ends together (as demonstrated on a YouTube video) the individual cords started fraying. I might just cut it straight and hand stitch the two ends together binding them to stop them fraying  -<

When I have used that sort of cording, I have just angled the ends off the edge of the fabric, crossing them over where they start and finish.  You get an unobtrusive crossover effect, and the ends are held within the seam. If its at the bottom of the cushion, its hardly noticeable.

The Show Must Go On / Mary Poppins Costume - Project Log
« on: January 30, 2021, 23:07:55 PM »
I have a major project for the year.  DD is a primary school teacher, and book week is in August.  Usually making anything for her is a last minute rush, so I am pushing her to decide ahead of time, so it can be planned for.  Given the theme "old worlds, new worlds, other worlds", I have suggested, and she agree's with, Mary Poppins.

Now, the components are walking skirt, frilly white blouse, red necktie, longline jacket, white gloves, umbrella, hat with flowers, and carpet bag,.  (not my photo - source  https://www.surfandsunshine.com/diy-mary-poppins-costume/

Given its a costume and doesn't need to be strictly period accurate, I am working on the premise of using existing patterns to get the "feel".  She would love an 1890's walking skirt, so I am wondering if I should splash out for the pattern  (if I do, where do I get it?).  Otherwise I have a 6 gore pattern (style D), I could add an extra pleated panel to the back .... WDYT?  The jacket is a complete mystery, and I will tackle that after the skirt.

I would love to hear any suggestions, and recommendations of patterns.  Given she doesn't like wool (and its too hot here, even in winter), suggestions of fabric would be great too.

Possible skirt pattern - Simplicity 5914 - view D adding extra width to the centre back gore to be taken up in pleats.  Possible issues, it doesn't have a waistband.  If I interline the fabric, and give it a faced hem for the swish factor, then it might need more support than a faced waistband could give.

This project may require me to break my fabric diet, but oh well, it probably wouldn't have lasted anyway.

Welcome EP39, I know you will find a wealth of advice on this forum.

I found this instruction on how to easily add piping to a cushion, including how to finish the ends (with photos).

Patterns Discussion / Re: Sewing Bee Sleeveless Shell Top

Consider the shape of the wearer too ......

If all of her bust shape is at the front, then a regular dart will do fine.  If however, she has a proper set of melons, meaning they are rounded out the sides, then you may need a curved dart to help the top turn around them.

@mudcat  ... we have state flowers in Australia, so I assume its a fairly common thing.

I would assume Michelle Obama's ensemble would have been purple, as in the burgundy end of the purple spectrum.  I think the media's focus on the colour, was an attempt tag some symbolism to the clothing.  I liked her outfit, to me it was a nod to the 70's pantsuit style.

thank you @StitchinTime  ..... I couldn't look at the article, because its a subscription only page, but it helped me narrow the search.

I have a set of embroidery files that would be perfect for this style of coat.

In just a passing image on the news tonight, I spotted a cream coat with what looked like embroidery around the hemline.  I only saw the back, so I am not sure who wore it.  I would dearly love to see it in more detail.

Machine Accessories / Re: Anti " chase yer foot pedal " gizmo

I have a desk mat under my sewing desk (means that I am not damaging the carpet with my chair), and under the foot pedal, I have one of these.

Its a wrist support mouse pad.  The underside is sticky, so it doesn't slide forward.  And my heel rests on the gell wrist support, giving my foot better support.  Without it, I tend to hold my foot up to press on the pedal, which did my instep and heel no end of damage.

Current Projects / Re: Christmas Craft 2020
« on: December 15, 2020, 10:54:14 AM »
This year, after many many years working in the school, I scored a permanent role in the department.  I have actually been acting in the role since this time last year, but now its permanent.  And so, this year, for the first time in over a decade, I have not been planning to sew 25+ gifts for the people at work.

That being said, the purpose of this topic is for xmas craft planning .... and not doing things at the last minute.

Rules .... they be for breaking .... aren't they?

I had planned on giving small gifts to the small team I am part of.  Only 4 people, nice small group, and I used some leftover gifts from last year (embroidered baubles).  Added to this, homemade ginger nuts, fudge and rum balls.

On Sunday night, I realised that I was attending a farewell at my old work (tomorrow), and decided I wanted to do a gift for the office team I worked with.  Only 4, not that big a job ....

Raid the fabric bin, and dig out an old faithful bag pattern.  I didn't buy any new fabric/notions for this .... all from the stash.  4 tote bags, in two days, around my work hours.  WTH was I thinking?

So here is my old work/new work gifts ready to go.  Just have to add some food goodies to the bags tomorrow.
