Overlockers & Coverstitchers / Overlocker Crisis!
« on: April 25, 2017, 09:17:01 AM »
I have a Pfaff 4850 Coverstyle (Combination O/L-Coverstitch machine), and have had no issues with it previously.  Last night was an exception.

This machine has two sets of needle positions, and to use the O/L, you need to take out the needles and move them to the right.  I couldn't do this as the tiny grub screw was missing from its tiny little hole, where it waits to be tightened to hold the needle in place.  Absolute panic set in.  I stripped the machine down, hoping it would have slipped into the body of the machine.  Nothing doing.  Emptied the two fabric bins, and went over the carpet with my fingertips.  OH was warned that he was not to hoover until it was found.

Then I had a lightbulb moment, use one of the grub screws from the CS side until I found it. Good thinking, except it wouldn't go in, and the needle wouldn't push into place (you do see where we're going with this don't you?).

Head scratching time.  Then another thought occurred to me.  I put the tiny screwdriver into the hole, and turned.  Out came one tiny little grub screw  :| , to stop it from working its way out I had screwed it in further than usual, and the hole appeared empty of grub screws.  :|

Peace is now restored, the overlocked seam now sewn, and all grub screws are firmly in their place.  The unintended consequence is, that I have clean, empty bins, and a squeaky clean Pfaff!!

Yes, centre back for me too.  Less unpicking too if it goes pear shaped.

Good luck.

Well, what about this?  I cut this coat out ages ago, and it was almost finished, but not quite.  I decided to finish it off at the weekend, but why?  I'll never wear it, the fabric is horrid, and pattern placement was because I didn't have much of it!

OK, to the pattern, Indygo Junction 866.  This is the second of theirs that I've made (I did the pyjama pattern), but neither will be worn.  They are just too dressy for me.

The fit is good, the pattern was easy to follow, but it's just not me.  If I was going to a wedding maybe....

I'll finish it off with poppers under buttons, and let it hang some more....

If I go to a wedding, I'll definitely make it again  ;)

Eventually finished this over the weekend, but I don't think DD will like it.  I think it's a bit 'mumsy', but maybe it's a gardening dress....

Issues with this pattern:  it needed more ease, although I liked that it was darted at the back; the front V is awful!

Regarding the V.  The neck edge should have Vilene stabiliser ironed on, and the tiny facing sewn at the V.  The facing is then trimmed down, and the rest of the 5/8" turned to finish the V.  Well it looks awful.  I re-did it once, and it looks just a tad better, but I think it would have been 100% improved with a facing.

I've attached a picture.  :(

I ordered maternity trousers from MC2 patterns, so I'll report back on how they make up.  Had a reply about a printing problem I had, and it proved good advice (even though Fran had already sorted it for me).

Going for fabric this morning, should be a quick project.

I really like this SG, and metal snaps would look great.  Although, if you had an old Singer machine and bought a buttonhole attachment, you would have no fears of doing buttonholes. :)

Go for it!  We're all here to hold your hand:)

OK, finished.  It's wearable for work.  A lovely style, and I will make it again in a far nicer fabric.  This fabric is not nice, and doesn't hang well.

Issues:  It does run a bit big, and I'll make the next size down next time; the pleat at the front has no purpose, and makes the front look bulky; sleeves could do with slimming down, there's a lot of ease there; I will not use their technique for either the yoke or the placket.  I did a sort of burrito method for the yoke, and the placket and neckband look much neater done on the overlocker.

Here's a couple of pics.
