The Haberdashery / Re: Can anyone recommend a good pin cushion
« on: March 27, 2017, 22:55:45 PM »
I have one I bought years ago at an antique fair. The stall holder made them herself from pieces of vintage fabric, very solid and beautifully trimmed with fringing. It's now worn through to the lining on one side and I have had to turn it over and use the bottom instead. I haven't seen that stallholder for some years so don't think I can get another one.

I remember reading somewhere, that "in days gone by", they used to fill pincushions with dried coffee grounds - might be worth a try?

The problem with magnetic pinholders is that the pins themselves get magnetised in contact with it, and when you try and pick up one pin, you get two or three others stuck to it.

Sewing Spaces and Furniture / Re: Sewing Spaces
« on: March 22, 2017, 23:16:06 PM »
So sorry about your cat - she looked beautiful.

My sewing space is still the dining room, but since we have moved it's a separate room and I can make a mess in there and be able to shut it off out of sight. Because we have to use the room when visitors come though (a frequent occurrence), it makes me clear it up often and keeps things organised. I have managed to split the stash between two plastic boxes and a large basket. The boxes are under two different beds and the basket is in the smallest bedroom. It really looks as if I haven't got very much................

What lies beneath... / Re: Silhouette/Body shapers

I bought this on Ebay:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Power-Net-Power-Mesh-Bra-and-Costume-Making-Medium-Weight-Black-Colour-/262780233371?var=&hash=item3d2eec269b

I had an all-in-one which was lovely but simply not strong enough for what I needed! I lined it with this and it did the trick. It says medium and it's very similar to other RTW shapewear I have.

I also have similar shape issues. I made this one:

in the cap sleeved version and it was very easy. Wouldn't be too difficult to extend the sleeves I don't think. It has been very wearable.

A Good Yarn / Re: So, What have you got...
« on: March 22, 2017, 15:10:43 PM »
I have a Knitmaster 700 with ribber, colour changer and weaving arm and a Corona Jumbo - all sadly packed away until space becomes available.

Francesca - try and get hold of books by Diane Bennett. She has now retired and I don't think she is selling them anymore, but they are quite often available on Ebay and Amazon. Don't be put off by the dated pictures on the covers. I was lucky enough to be taught by Diane many years ago and she was quite simply the most natural teacher I have ever met.  I remember her first piece of advice was: " If you put your machine away under the bed you will never use it". I agree with the others in that you should put away the ribber and the colour changer until you have got the hang of single bed knitting, and, if you don't already have one, get a charting device (Knitleader, I think for Brother). Finding suitable patterns is a problem and it will allow you to knit any shape you like, in any size you like, in any yarn you like, at any tension you like.

I'm here! Many thanks to the kind person who directed me here, and how nice of you all to be concerned. I'd like to stay please! It's so nice to see all the names I've been missing. I am halfway through my daughter's curtains, but I think they might have to wait a bit longer while I catch up with everything.
